It's a way to loosen the kink or curl to the hair without it going completely straight.

It's nothing new.. people have done it for YEARS. People like Miss Jessie's and others have just found a new way to market it to natural kinkies and curlies that want that "natural look" but want a looser texture to their kinks and curls.

A lot of people find using a silkener/relaxer/texturizer is a way to make the hair more managable because it decreases frizz and makes the hair easier to comb. The only thing about it is the hair becomes porous, you have to make sure you have a good protein and moisture balance to prevent breakage, and you have to maintain it on some level because when the roots grow in that hair will be different than the rest of the hair. You really have to know what you are doing to keep your hair in optimal condition.

This is why a lot of naturals avoid these sorts of chemical treatments but they can work out just fine for people that know how to properly maintain the hair after the treatment is done.
I guess. I was thinking it might be one of those coconut cream or molasses 'natural relaxer' type thing.
Yeah but a "silkener" isn't the same as a natural relaxer and I think if Michelle meant that she'd have sense enough to say it was a natural relaxer. A silkener is a chemical treatment and I went by what she stated not what I thought she might mean.

@Vegas_Curls.. RIO was actually chemical. It was tested and had the strength of battery acid. Hence why it took so many people's hair out..made it literally fall off and break. My cousin actually used this product (I applied it to her hair) when we were teenagers. She wanted hair like mine which is a 3c/3b mix but she naturally has very wiry 4b hair. Within 20 minutes her hair went from past shoulder length to above ear length broken off in all different lengths..no joking. We watched her hair melt down the sink as I rinsed the product. We were hysterical! My cousin also had stinging on her ears and neck!

making my own natural hair relaxer:::NEED HELP!
That is horrible! Did her hair grow back? I believe chemicals helprd trigger my alopecia. Me and relaxers, silkeners ect. Never again!
