I'd be fired if I did that.

As for customers using cell phones while checking out, it's not uncommon. I had a customer yell at me when I told her her total. She said, 'Excuse me, can't you see I'm having a conversation?!'

I wanted to say, 'B****, pay your bill and then talk all you like.' She wasn't having a life or death conversation.

Cashiers wearing gloves isn't unusual. Bags are very irritating with repeated contact.

Places with low pay and no/minimal benefits do tend to have employees who can be less than professional all too often. If these places were serious about having good staff, they'd treat their staff like respectable assets, and not chattel.
