We use bells for communication as opposed to having someone use the PA system.

If a bell rings once, more checkout lines need to be opened.

If a bell rings twice, miscellaneous assistance is needed. Broken items, customer assistance, etc.

If a bell rings three times, a manager is needed. That's usually for something like a return/refund, employee discount, and the occasional check fraud.
