It could just be that they are a different texture-- more coarse, tighter curl (or looser curl?), or both, so they don't clump with the other hairs that are the same texture. I have this going on too, all of my new greys do this and some that are not grey are coarser than the rest of my hair and stick out. Frizz makes them blend in with the rest of my texture though, lol.

I had hairs like this before I ever colored and I haven't straightened or even blow dried for years (other than at the salon <once/year) so I don't think it has much to do with damage.

ETA: I love how much I learn here, but I definitely start noticing and trying to "fix" things about my hair that I never really noticed or cared about before.
