with all the coverage of Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee, I have to admit that I am enjoying all the hats. I'm trying to remember the times I've worn hats and there are very few and all so casual. Cold weather hats, such as for shoveling snow, baseball type caps for days in the sun, graduation. Nothing as elegant as what we've seen on tv.
I remember my mom telling me that when she was young, (in the 40s, 50s, into the 60s) she always wore a hat to Mass, women and girls were expected to cover their heads in a church. I think I remember my Nana sometimes wearing one to church in the early 70s, and there was one woman in our church, about 10 years ago, who did so every Sunday. She was in her late 80s and always looked to 'put together' to me.
I am wondering, in England, are the hats common for regular dress up situations for regular people, or is this something only seen under the pomp and circumstance of the royalty?
