I think what u r describing does have its origins in our American history.....if u have ever traveled to the deep south or have older African American relatives....they could probably explain it. From my experience, I think the nod is an acknowledgement of one another carried over from a time when we (AA) were subjected to a submissive and subserveant roles in society. I can remember my grandfather (born in mississippi in 1914) giving the nod and wondering what was that all about.....now i'm in my 40's and understand it clearly. Don't feel like u have to explain it....it just is...... and it has always given me a feeling of comfort, confidence and pride :-).
