One more thing I do with my underlayer - my hair in general doesn't like protein, but I've found if I use a protein-containing conditioner as a LI on the underlayer, the ringlets form up better. So I use non-protein LI on the rest of the hair, and the protein containing LI on just that underlayer. So sometimes by trial and error you'll find a different product works under there.
