OT: New Who

Anyone see the new episode yet? I know it doesn't officially air in the US and Canada til April 17th, but well, it aired in the UK already, and...there's the internet. ;)

CurlyPolkaDot 04-05-2010 01:27 AM

Yeah! I think that Matt Smith is okay.. But my mum's friend works at the BBC and she told us that he thinks ALOT of himself :( I miss David Tennant :D

plunkybug 04-05-2010 01:40 AM

I think the episode was good, and of course as a debut with a new Doctor and companion, everything will evolve with each new episode. Not crazy about the new title sequence though...the first bit of the theme rubs me the wrong way, but then it eases into a more "classic" Who style.

I think that Matt Smith's Doctor is a bit wild and unpredictable, and there's elements to tie him to his predecessors, but that he'll do well in the role as he settles in a bit more. There is a general good response to him so far, even with the "emo-Who" skeptics.

I don't doubt there's a bit of an ego. I gather that Eccleston had one too, and of course Tom Baker...he probably had the biggest of them all. :P I think we'll all miss David Tennant...he was brilliant. I'm hoping to like Matt Smith at least as much.

yesss :blob4: I have seen it and I really enojyed it. I loved Amy's red hair, its like my dream colour!!
But...I miss david tennant :pale: he was GREAT!!

plunkybug 04-05-2010 03:01 AM

I can't wait for a special curly to make her reappearance! :)

gekko422 04-05-2010 10:04 AM

I haven't seen it, I will wait for it to air here. I don't like the new Who, I will see how he does. I liked David Tennant, but I liked Eccleston better.

nynaeve77 04-05-2010 10:55 AM

I haven't seen it yet, either, but I'm looking forward to it. I remember being so upset when Eccleston left, but I ended up loving Tennant, too. It takes a while for the new doctor to grow on you sometimes.

I am excited about Steven Moffat being the new showrunner, because I loved every episode of the show he's written. Also, next season, we get a Neil Gaiman-written episode! Nerdvana!

plunkybug 04-05-2010 11:58 AM

Yes, it does usually take an episode or two to get used to a new Doctor. For me, David Tennant became the Doctor when he bellowed "I DON'T KNOW" to the Sycorax leader when he was asked who he was, and then began running around, ready to press big red buttons. It took a few episodes with Eccles to really see him as the Doctor, as I'd wished they'd have had some mention or tie in to Paul McGann's Doctor...it just felt weird at first.

Many die hard fans are commenting that they see Pat Troughton and Peter Davison in Matt Smith's performance, and that can't really be a bad thing I don't think. I think he'll grow on people.

blueroses79 04-05-2010 05:38 PM

Plunky: so it's findable online?

I may wait a bit. I'm systematically going through the Pertwee episodes. He's my favorite doctor so far (and I can tell he'll be my favorite, period. There's just no outdoing someone who dresses like a member of the Moody Blues, for me), which makes me skeptical of someone as young as Smith.... But then, so far there hasn't been a doctor I've seen who I've been unable to see as the doctor. Which is weird and amazing.

goobernut 04-05-2010 05:52 PM

You know, I liked Eccelston (thought he was amazing the first episode), but I think I like Tennant better.

I really liked Donna. I know some don't. I just thought she was perfect. Rose was never my fave, I know lots of people loved her. Meh.

I just don't want some youngish girl again! I don't even mind someone Martha's age. Or like, a MALE companion. Or lets get two companions going again. Or an alien companion. I mean, we've already done a Rose storyline -- can we do something new?

Oh yes, it's definitely findable online. Hubby does that stuff though, not me. I wouldn't know where to begin.

Pertwee was awesome, and then there was Bessie, and UNIT and the companions. I mean, look how lasting Sarah Jane has become? Who else would practice Venusian Aikido in a frilly shirt with cape?

Every doctor has his own style, and I know that what Steven Moffat wants Matt Smith's Doctor to come across is that he is still the same Doctor, just with a new face and new characteristics. There's a few Eccles moments in The Eleventh Hour, and a few throwbacks to Tennant as well. And like I said, lots of hardcore fans are seeing Matt Smith with bits of Troughton and Davison in his performance. We'll see how his character evolves.

I was ok with Rose with Eccles, but she was definitely a changed person with Tennant, and a bit too cocky for me. Martha was alright, and she gets under-appreciated I think, not just by the Doctor, but also the fans. Still, I'm guilty of that too. I liked Donna best of the female companions. I think that Amy will be somewhere between Martha and Donna, but it's too soon to tell really. She's got some issues of her past to deal with which I think will get some detail as the show continues, and there's abandonment which has led her to be hardened and cynical as an adult. Without giving out too many details, it is possible there will be another male companion, though there is nothing in the trailers to back that up...it's just a personal thought. It seems though, that the male companions don't stick around for long. An alien companion is LOOOONG overdue, and so is someone from the past. Jack is the only one from the future I think, and the rest are present day. Double companions do make for interesting storylines and development.

I think Matt Smith will be fine, and come into his own. I don't know about Amy though. I think I'll have a better feel in a few weeks when we've seen more of them interacting and easing into their characters more.

Yay! More Donna fans. She's what got me into Doctor Who. I saw The End of Time over Christmas with my parents and had to know why her mind would burn up if she remembered the Doctor. ...and here I am. If only she could've kept her time-lord mind!

Oh wow! So blueroses, you're a really new fan! Have you seen all of the new series yet or are you starting at the beginning and working up chronologically? I first saw Doctor Who on my 2nd date with my (now) husband. He'd apparently told some friends, "if she likes Doctor Who, I'll marry her" about me. Hee hee hee. Mask of Mandragora with Tom Baker was my first story.

Yup. I started with new series 4 and went backwards (well, forwards within each series). Then typed "classic doctor who" or something into Youtube & saw Tom Baker's first episode. The next one I found ended up being a Pertwee episode (Carnival of Monsters), and I was in. love. I feel like I belong in early 70s England, so only with reluctance will I move on. Not sure if I'll go forwards or backwards. My parents still don't know that I've become a who-nut since the last time they saw me  I think they were watching Doctor Who the night my brother was born.

ITA.

CurlyPolkaDot 04-06-2010 07:28 AM

Donna was my favorite assistant! She was played so well yet Rose was my least favorite, she was odd, I just didn't like the way Billie Piper played her at all!

nynaeve77 04-06-2010 12:57 PM

Donna was the best! She kept the Doctor in his place...LOL He needed someone like her to keep him from getting too full of himself. Look what he managed to get into after she was gone.

It was symbiotic...he needed her as much as she needed him. She kept him in line and grounded and in the process he expanded her mind and interests and her personality changed for the better. Poor poor Donna.

CurlyPolkaDot 04-07-2010 01:22 PM

I miss Donna :(
