Thumbs up Home made Sea Salt Spray-For curl enhancement

WARNING! Not for those who hate mag sulphate or have very dry hair.

There was an old thread on how to make a All in one spray which contained Epsom Salt.

All in One Spray (UPDATED)

Basically I used this recipe but omitted the conditioner. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJlNpRmVwvY

I wasn't looking for a "All in One" spray because with my hair it's impossible. I need to layer my products to calm my POOF. So I kept it very simple. I just added 1T of Sea Salt to Hot Distilled water and mixed it up. I added a little Lavender EO just for smell. I spritzed it on dry hair to try to refresh ICK! It left me with no definition and even more POOF.

I used it on freshly washed hair on top of DM Mira Gelly just sprayed it all over. Topped it off with BRHG & with a drop of honey. This worked really well to enhance my curl pattern & my hair wasn't dried out. I should mention that I've been struggling with getting 2nd day hair (still growing out some layers) so washing every day in some form is leaving me a little Over conditioned and not as defined as I prefer. So if you like your hair after a day at the beach go ahead and experiment a little. Just wanted to share with my fellow wavies

So then any other wavies gonna try this out I posted this here rather then Gen Discussion because most curlies aren't looking to enhance more curl, they just want to control and define.

I really love this spray! This spray is giving me additional hold as well as more enhancement. I got 3 day hair with minimal touch ups, that hasn't happened to me in ages. I think the key is to put it on top of already well moisturized hair. I've only tried it with DM MG so far because it worked great and I hadn't had any real good hair days in a while. But I will experiment with other moisturizing stylers such as my Darcy's Coiling Gelly maybe Aloe Fix. I also forgot to mention that the type of sea salt I used is called "Celtic Sea Salt" or "Grey Sea Salt" it's unbleached and can be found in health food stores. http://www.amazon.com/Celtic-Grain-S.../dp/B000SWVQ08

I don't know for certain if it's less drying then regular sea salt that has been bleached, seems it would be since it's more pure. It's also great for your teeth and gums when you rinse with it

I have dry hair...but I still want to try this spray! I've tried it in the past, both with and without a bit of conditioner in the spray bottle. It did dry out my hair a LOT, so I think I might try it again with less salt. I also applied it to dry hair so I think I might take your advice and try it on freshly washed hair! I'll have to let you know how it works...

I also made a batch with conditioner added and applied to freshly washed hair. It didn't work as well and my hair was a bit OC'd. But like I said before, my hair is not lacking moisture these days. It really is easier to add more moisture then to take it out IMO. So if this dries me out a little bit I'll just up the amount of conditioner I use in my rinse out or use a LI if needed. I'll also continue to low poo to avoid any build up.

Post your results when you try it I'd love to hear how this may help other wavies that are looking for more hold & defintion.

i think i'm going to try something like this tonight. i'm getting bored doing the same old thing plus my hair seems to be a little limp lately as well.

just a question: i know that Epsom salt is mag sulfate, which some curly styling products have. is sea salt similar to this?

my hair was limpish too even with protein so I was definitely looking for something new. I noticed it perked up when I used JC CCS but it didn't work that great when dews got into the 60's. If you check the link I posted for the recipe they were using epsom salt so go ahead & give it a try. It's no different from making homemade FSG and adding epsom salt to the hot water.

ETA: Got 3 days out of my combo again I think as long as you don't over-use it there's no need to be concerned with dryness.

so i made a small batch yesterday and decided to try it out. i added 1 tbsp sea salt, 1/4 tbsp honey, 1/2 tbsp glycerin and 1 tbsp of conditioner to hot water.

i decided to spray it on freshly washed hair to see how well it worked, and topped it off by scrunching in HESMU. my hair came out defined and so soft! i had a bit of surface frizz (which i'm attributing to the conditioner in the spray. i've been going sans leave-in lately and my hair has been looking good. only reason i added it in the first place was just in case the sea salt turned out to be drying for me.) i kept touching my hair all night, which i'm sure added to the frizz, but i didn't care lol.

i think i'm going to make this again (it's really easy, so why not?) without the conditioner

Turns out my hair is way too dry to do a salt spray. Salt just pulls the moisture right out! Oh well...glad it worked for you guys!!

Hey this looks very easy to make so I might try it soon!

How much did you spray on your head? Did you try to get most of your hair? Upside down or right side up?

Thanks Del for posting this!! This is the first time ever going without diffusing and my hair has so much wave! I was uncertain about trying this as my hair does not like anything w magnesium. I get a lot of frizz with re coil and with spiral solutions My first attempt was w kosher salt mix which didint work! My second attempt I used sea salt over vaseline body gel and a drop of CCCC lite then a drop of agave w BHRG. Then I let air dry. I love the idea of not diffusing.

You can play around a little bit I'm using about 15sprays total sometimes less all over, side to side lifting the underlayers etc...

Pops and wavyR great to see you tried it and had good results

I think I'll try it to see if it helps 2nd day hair. And I'm thinking of adding some honey, too, if I have any around. I'll let you know how it goes later...

Alright, I tried it with my own little variation. I used 1 cup warm water, about a teaspoon of honey, and 1 tablespoon of epsom salts. It did perk up my 2nd day hair and enhance the waves, but I got a little frizzy. Next batch I make I'll try 1 tablespoon of honey to offset the frizz, hopefully. I'll keep you guys posted.
