So I gave this a shot today. Figured I have nowhere to go until Monday so if it ended up looking like straw, who cares over the weekend.

Did 1/4 cup water, 1 packet gelatin, 1/4 tsp ACV, and 2 tsp SN conditioner. Didn't have any oil.

It was pretty runny, distributed it on washed hair as evenly as possible, put a plastic walmart bag over it cause that's all I had, and ran it under shower water for a few mins.

Results... not much of anything. Did not feel dry at ALL while rinsing it out, in fact it felt really soft, like softer than normal, to the point where all I used afterwards was a bit of SN conditioner that I didn't leave in very long. Weird. Hair still feels super soft. It's still frizzy, and not any bouncier. Curl pattern *might* be slightly better at the crown. Otherwise, can't tell much of a difference. So I guess it doesn't hate protein - it's not any worse, but not any better either.

Thoughts?

I FINALLY did this -- after a while of complaining that my hair felt too soft and was acting weird, I broke down and did this. It was about time! I did the regular recipe just to start out with and added some honey and apricot oil (what else is new, I love that darn oil and haven't been able to use it!! ). But I still have a really stupid question -- how exactly are you ladies applying it? I guess mine turned out really watery, and I had to literally pour it over my head and didn't get the best distribution. I tried to spread it out as best I could, and I stood under a very hot shower with a shower cap on my head for somewhere around 3-5 mins. I didn't even need conditioner afterwards -- I just used the tiniest amount of YTC and rinsed even that out. It turned out okay -- I noticed my hair felt more like hair and not overly soft like it has been, which was great. But my hair wasn't any curlier and it's still kinda droopy after using my non-protein stuff. I guess I need a harder hit next time. I guess I have to read the thread over to catch the blow-drying PT posts! Did you guys ever get it to work without using mag. sulfate? I don't have that on hand. And I am so trying some coconut milk as an additive next time!! Again, forgive my ignorance, but how is that benefitting to the treatment and hair?

I think the coconut milk is supposed to add additional protein.

I made mine with steaming hot tap water (ours gets insanely hot here) and just dissolved it in that. Added the vinegar first, but did t measure the water - just put enough to dissolve it and keep it a little thick. I put it on my hair with some conditioner already in it and my hair detangled and well rung-out. The conditioner seemed to make it easier to distribute. I then combed it through (finger combing would work fine, too).

I didn't bother with the bag this time, though I will next time for sure. Usually when I do a DT of any kind, I put on a bag and then put a heating pad on my head. Haha

WNW, If you leave it to "set" for a while, it will thicken. That improves the, um, textural experience. Yep, it's runny and messy.

I love the "feels more like hair" comment. That's exactly how I feel about protein, especially when I first started using it.
I have blow-dried it without mag. sulfate. It does work - so if the mag. sulfate worries you, skip it.

From your description, I think you may have either overdone the oil.
Or your hair may simply not get curlier with a PT. Mine used to, especially when I swam 2x per week. Now that I use protein in my FSG often, doing a PT actually overconditions my hair and it gets droopy until I wash it again.

Always a juggling act!

IAGirl, thanks for this recipe! I did the basic recipe and am happy to say my hair liked it. I don't think I can use protein rich products regularly bc of build up but this works great.
Thanks👍!

Oh my! Look at that shine and that lovely texture! Not much frizz to be seen. Nice job on the PT! Glad you liked it.

IAGirl has anyone reported getting itchy from this? I'm trying to determine if it's the treatment (just did the basic gelatin, acv ,olive oil) or a new conditioner.

Conditioner is Alba Botanica Detangling Conditioner:
Ingredients

Aqua (Water), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (1), Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil (1), Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Glycerin , Camellia, Sinensis Leaf Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract (1), Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Leaf Extract, Panthenol , Rubus Chamaemorus (Cloudberry) Seed Oil, Moringa Pterygosperma Seed Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil (1), Glycine Soja (Soybean) Protein, Dicetyldimonium Chloride, Citric Acid, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Benzoate, Limonene, Fragrance (Parfum) (1)Certified Organic Ingredient

On the plus side, my hair looks fab today. Not the itchiest I've ever been, but I'm thinking it's either the Chamomile or the gelatin?

I'm inclined to think the itch would come from some of the herbal/plant extracts and oils or fragrance or preservatives - but you'd have to isolate them (use PT alone or use conditioner without PT) to work it out. Hooray for fab hair!

I've been playing with different ingredients, but this is my final recipe (until someone posts a new ingredient I want to try in this recipe)

My version of IAgirl's gelatin PT recipe:

1 tsp + ⅛ tsp gelatin
1 T water (coconut milk if I have that around)
1 T honey
1 T oil (usually 1 1/2 tsp each olive and coconut oil)
½ T conditioner
1 T yogurt
1/8 tps citric acid

I mix the gelatin and water in a small container. Pop it in the microwave a few seconds. It is done just before it starts to boil. Once it starts to boil, take it out immediately, because it will boil over. Add the honey and the coconut oil next so they melt. Then stir in the other ingredients.
For my hair, I do this every 2 weeks and leave it on an hour-ish. If you are new to this PT or protein, start with much less time.

I was afraid of this lol, but assumed it was the conditioner as well. Darn my picky body. Now to decide if the fab hair is worth the slight itch

WOW, Pedaheh. Intense. And you just rinse it out or do you use conditioner afterwards?

Default My gelatin PT testimonial :)

Before I started using this PT I was always struggling to keep my hair properly moisturized. I was using Ion effective care (soy protein) and other products with wheat protein. I found I could get over proteined relatively easily with these two proteins. So, I was reluctant to try IAgirl's PT (collagen) because I had always heard collagen was a very strong protein. I thought if I could get too much of the soy and wheat, collagen would be too strong for me. It wasn't.
Someone else (IDK who) said protein makes their hair feel more like hair. That is the best way to describe what IAgirl's PT does for my hair. Protein also gave me more elasticity. I used to have none now I have some. My very weak curl pattern now does more on its own if I just let it air dry. My hair is stronger and now has honest to goodness shine. But the amazing difference for me has been the difference this makes in my porous, dry hair's ability to hang on to moisture.

My routine before IAgirl's PT was:
Overnight coconut oil prewash every time I washed, spritz and condish method every time, and cowash most days. I did this summer and winter. Even with all this effort, my hair was barely moisturized in summer and almost moisturized in winter.

After doing IAgirl's PT for a few months:
In winter I only have to do an hour-ish of coconut oil prewash. I can also skip a day if I want, and I couldn't before. I no longer spritz and condish. And my hair is properly moisturized.
In summer I don't use coconut oil, spritz and condish, or cowash and my hair is still moisturized.

This PT has just made my life so much easier. I was working so hard to keep (or almost keep) my hair moisturized before. Now I feel like I'm off the hair treadmill. I know that the credit goes to IAgirl's PT because I was CG for a year before trying this PT. My hair had already had time to recover from sulfates and heat styling.
Thanks IAgirl.

This made my hair look so pretty! I used the banana and honey, and when I washed it out in the shower I could stretch my hair pretty far! My curls/waves are much curlier and resilient and bouncy! Thanks so much for sharing!!!

Wow, that's some testimonial - kudos to you for all the effort and dedication! I bet that would be helpful to non-wavy, dry & porous haired people too.

Default How much gelatin??

Maybe its because im in Australia, but the only gelatin we have in the cupboard is powdered in a single bag in a box. How much do you reckon one packet of gelatin (the size you have) is worth in like other measurements? Also sorry if im a bit late in this thread, i just really want to know how much to use, haha
