Yes, it's very liquid-y. If you let it cool a bit, you might catch it while thickening, but before it gels solid. Keep at it, the effects can be cumulative. Glad you like it!

Did a long-overdue PT after a couple of LI experiments that left my hair very OC'd, limp, and refusing to curl right. (I seriously have the wimpiest coarse hair ever lately!) I've been loving my really simple recipe of just the gelatin, water, and honey -- easy, quick, and still works amazing...no need for anything else! But, I added some coconut milk just for kicks, and it turned out great! My hair feels great, although I'm not sure the coconut milk made a noticeable different from my normal recipe, but it was a fun change! Hair felt SOOOO much better. It felt like hair again, was curling really nice and feels nice and healthy.

Hi everyone!
I've been very interested in trying a PT as I have never done one before. The recipe here sounds great but I do have a couple of questions.
I have an allergy to banana so could I use something like avocado instead? If so, how much should I use? My hair likes avocado oil so I'm assuming it will take to it.
Also, instead of adding an oil to the mix can I add some conditioner in its place or maybe even something like glycerin?
Thanks!

Thought we'd see you on here!
Yes, avocado should be fine! I do mine without any fruit!
And yes, conditioner instead of oil is totally fine, too!
Good luck!!

Totally leave out the banana - it's so tricky it's not even worth it unless somebody's hair goes crazy for banana.
Be careful that the avocado doesn't do something weird with the gelatin (maybe let it start to cool before you blend it in). For glycerin, 1/2 to 1 tsp. might be a good starting place. I know I've seen others use conditioner too.
Anything goes - the important thing is that the gelatin is fully dissolved and that nothing you add makes the mixture want to form clumps or separate.

Just a thought - jello with avocado chunks sounds like a picnic dish that somebody might actually try to make. I find that a little... slimy.

Yup, I'm here!
I am tempted to add a fruit but I think I'll work my way up to that and just try gelatin, water and condish to see how my hair takes to it.
Just so I know what to look out for, how will my hair feel and look if it doesn't work out for me?
Thanks to everyone for the help! I'll have to bookmark this thread for future reference.

Well, if you OD'd on the protein, it will get dry and straw-like.
It's always good to follow any PT with a DT. I never really have. Ad dryness problems, tho. My hair can't seem to get enough protein!

That's good to know. I didn't know that a DT should be done after a PT. I thought that would be overkill for hair. Since I struggle with a bit of dryness I'll probably try that to be on the safe side.

Whoops! Just saw my typo! Lol! I meant "I've never really had any trouble with dryness"!
I low-poo or co wash, detangle my hair, do the PT, then put on a RO with some honey (maybe oil, too) added, or some other DT, then leave it on for a few minutes.

Ah! Maybe I won't have to do a DT then! I'll probably just put a bit of conditioner in and let it sit for a few minutes then rinse after the PT.
Ignore the typos.

Ok, forgive me if I am asking something that has already been addressed earlier in this thread. I did just read through all of them but there was A LOT, which is GREAT.....I am just a bit overwhelmed. A couple of ladies on the 3a forum advised me to come here and check out this protein treatment. I do want to try it! i just want to make sure that I know what I am doing. Right now I am not CG......wanting to transition to that. I currently use Redken Extreme shampoo, which is for distressed hair that needs protein. It works really well. If I use this protein treatment into in addition to that shampoo would that be be too much do you think? I have the Redken Extreme conditioner too but alternate between that and the Redken Color Extend conditioner because I really like it. I have bought a few things before (can't remember the brands or what they really were) and they made my hair feel like straw like I have read others post about. I never knew what was doing that but it was the worst feeling ever. Of course I just stopped using those products. Seems like it was a shampoo and conditioner to bring out the blonde in your hair when I used to hightlight my hair. And then a glaze or something I tried one time for shine. I am thinking John Freida. I know this is probably irrelevant but I am just wondering if that was a high dose of protein or something or if something else could cause that straw feeling. Any ideas? From using the Redken Extreme, it appears that my hair loves protein. My hair is dry too I think though.......I'm really confused by that.....it feels dry but I've read it may not really be dry but lacking in protein. Can you tell I am totally confused and overwhelmed? My main goal is to get my spiral curls back without having to use a curling iron on the ends which is what I have had to do for years. Sorry for being for long! Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!

As long as your hair doesn't mind that much protein, there shouldn't be a problem- my most significant deviance from full CG is that I use CHS Treatment Shampoo before my PT/DT combo (it's another protein enriched sulfate shampoo). I feel like I get even better results with this (to prevent overdoing the protein, I add some conditioner to this PT and then follow with my DT).

You can also test this on one small section/curl of your hair before you commit to a full head PT. Be sure to DT the test section before your decide if you like it. Hair sometimes feels rough and hard after the PT and before the DT.

IAgirl - I've used your PT recipe (above) twice and it's just awesome. Thanks so much. This time I added a bit of coconut oil/ honey & conditioner to your basic recipe and my hair loved it. Just wanted to say thank you.

Finally remembered to pick up some gelatin from the store today as I've been meaning to try this for a looong time. I stayed fairly true to the original recipe...I used 1/4 cup of water and vinegar instead of citric acid. I also used honey and conditioner, but omitted the banana and oil. The banana would have been too much of a pain, and as I chose CJAAOO for my conditioner, I felt there was no need to add any oils.
Blech, the gelatin has a funky smell, but the honey and conditioner masked that. I think I should've had the water a little hotter (it was just shy of the boil in my kettle) and let it sit while I washed my hair. I got a little over-eager and added the conditioner to it when it was probably still a little too hot, and it didn't mix in all that well...but I was in a bit of a time-crunch. I found it very hard to apply, and in the future, I will prepare it earlier and let it set up a bit more before using it. I did also find part of my trouble was that i had a lot of loose hairs, so as I would add some to my hair, loose hairs would stick. I may have to do some mild detangling in the shower or do that with dry hair before I get in the shower.
I did use a shower cap and used a t-shirt to plop with to hold it on. I should've though to use my heating pad...but I did stand in the stream of how water with the cap still on, for a good few minutes. It seems to me that it rinsed well, and that I was pretty moisturized, but I wanted to add some conditioner, so I used a little CJBSC rather than say Rehab or Curl Fix. I love those two, but I did the PT as I feel I have been a little OC'd, and the way my hair felt rinsing (ie not dry or rough) tells me that my assumption was correct.
I did add a wee bit of Curl Fix as a LI and used some Curl Queen, super soaked and plopped, added some HEBE and a little super soaked and diffused. I'm still crunchy, but it looks like the results will be ok. I'm getting ready for bed and will probably SOTC with a little body butter.

I love these PTs! I have just been doing the basic recipe. The one thing that always plagues me is that I get little clumps of gelatin I have to fish out before using the mixture on my hair. I finally figured out that rather than dissolving it directly in boiling water, you can first sprinkle the gelatin packet over 1 Tbsp cold water to soften it, then pour boiling water over this and stir to dissolve. Zero clumps!
Thank you so much IAgirl for this awesome recipe!
