The past two weeks I've been using the original water/gelatin/acv recipe (I ran out of my PT and haven't been to sally's). This has worked well for me so I can't wait to try the new one. In fact I'm typing this with gelatin drying on my head that I need to go rinse out.

That's a quote you don't hear every day!

I think this is much the same as the original recipe, except the volume of water is smaller because the first was SO drippy.
I'm really glad it's working well for you, Pedaheh!

Yogurt (not non-fat) might be a good add-in too, not so much for the proteins (more likely you could use the bacterial proteins than the milk proteins) but for the fats and carbohydrates and acidity. It's great for your skin too.

The gelatin PT seems to be working very well for me. My wet hair actually stretches before it breaks. A big step forward for my hair's elasticity.
Yogurt was already on my mental list of things to experiment with adding to your new recipe. Then I thought...better try the original recipe before I start messing with it.
Usually I think the protein in food isn't a great for a PT because protein size is too big. However gelatin has collagen which is the same ingredient in aphogee and nexxus emergencee. Like I said, it is really working well for me without the aphogee stench.

I tried this Wednesday morning and really liked it! Such good timing too because I was way overdue for a PT. Iíve never used Aphogee, so I canít compare it to that. The only ones Iíve tried are the Sallyís version of K-Pak (hated it due to the mineral oil) and the Nexxus Emergencee, which I just ran out of. When I use Emergencee, my hair actually feels really good and silky as Iím applying it and as Iím rinsing it. Itís never felt rough and straw-like as some others have reported, so I suppose that means I really need the protein.

I made the basic recipe, only adding the pinch of citric acid and a few drops of avocado oil after the gelatin mix had cooled a bit. Applied the mixture, put on plastic cap and turban, left it on for 5 minutes, then got straight in the shower to rinse and applied my regular conditioner (currently Yes To Cucumbers Daily Care). Hair felt great and was very shiny, frizz-free and much perkier. Iím wondering though if I could have left it on longer, or whether it would have gotten too difficult to rinse out? Have you ever left it on longer than 5 minutes, IAgirl? Or is it better to keep the time at 5 minutes and just do the treatments more frequently if I feel I need more protein?

Thanks again for posting this. Oh, and if anyone is interested, you can get large boxes of the gelatin packets (32 packets per box) at WalMart for just a couple of bucks.

I know I have left them on for longer than 5 minutes. With the Aphogee 2-step you actually blow-dry the PT on your hair with high heat until it's dry and hard. This does't take me long, but it's a big dose of heat.

When I started using Aphogee, I discovered that my hair began stretching like rubber bands rather than snapping off. It got shinier and held the waves better. This is the result I look for in a PT.

I have used this recipe blow-dried in with epsom salts, and glopped on with banana in the mix without any attempt to increase the heat (forgot plastic bag/cap), and with plastic and a warm towel. All seem to work with the blow-drying and epsom salt leaving more frizz (naturally). I think heat is better than no heat.

Heat has the potential to speed up any chemical reactions taking place -- positively charged proteins sticking to negatively charged hair. The acid helps keep the charge on the proteins (that is kind of an oversimplification, but whatever).
At some point, all those sites that can bind the protein will have already bound some protein and the rest is just going to have to wash away. So if you get good results with 5 minutes, great. You can try 8 or 10 or 15 minutes and if that seems even better, great! It's your hair, you are the best judge of how it responds.
But the hair can only hang on to so much protein and once you find the right amount of time for your hair, stick with it.

Glad it worked well for you this time! Never had a problem with rinsing out unless the gelatin isn't fully dissolved.

Frequency: I can do this twice per week, although I don't see the same change as if I only do it once per week. My hair is very fine and it likes the protein.

See what works. Trial and error is tedious, but we learn a lot more in the process.

EDIT: My final version of the gelatin PT is on page 6 post #111.


I did this PT today.
I did it as written with 1/4 c water, 1/4 tsp ACV, 3 drops olive oil, all the add ins, plus 1/4 + 1/16 tsp epsom salt (what I poured out of the container). I blew it 80-90% dry before I got bored. I left it on maybe 45 minutes after that.
This made about twice the volume I need for my fine, thin, chin length hair. It was also a bit runny, but less so then aphogee. When I went to rinse it out is was a hard gelatinous mess that took me forever to rinse out. After the DT my hair was still lacking moisture. I blame the epsom salt. My hair has a love hate relationship with epsom salt. It makes my hair more curly but really dries it out. Overall, this is still my favorite PT. It just needs to be tweaked to my liking.
Next time I will make less. I plan to cut the recipe roughly in half. I will skip the epsom salt. I may decrease the ratio of glycerin too. I'll probably add more honey, because my hair is a big fan.

Correct me if I'm wrong IAgirl, but I think if you blow it dry, there is no reason to leave it on longer. I did because 1)I didn't blow it completely dry. 2)My day just worked out that way.

I don't see why there would be any benefit to leaving it on longer if you blew your hair dry with the PT in it.
It's all cooked and done!
With blow-drying there is still the problem of blow drying (heat and drying to skin and hair) so that's why there's oil in the recipe. I think the epsom salts are really optional. In the Aphogee, I believe it's there to help the liquid congeal with heat. Aphogee 2-step is super-runny.
But there may be some benefit to the epsom salts, I just can't find a reference to the chemistry for that which is credible.

I'll be doing this tomorrow, so I'll report back too!

I tried it, with all the options included (but no epsom salts), and when it cooled somewhat I mixed it with my hand blender until it was a nice creamy consistancy. Covered with a plastic bag for about 15 min. and no problem rinsing it out in the shower. Very nice results and love the idea of it being so healthy!!!

So glad you liked it. I love that it's fresh, not full of preservatives, inexpensive, and you control what goes in there. Instead of buying a bunch of different products, you have these basic, cheap ingredients and you tailor the product to meet your needs. And then share with the rest of us!

I tried the PT again with banana and honey (no epsom salt) + plastic over hair and some warm water running over plastic cover for heat, probably for 5 minutes.
Wow! I needed a lot of conditioner after I rinsed it out, but my waves and wurls and curls are much better. Nice shine. Nice and stretchy too.

It does make a rather large amount for one person with banana or other additives. Could definitely cut the recipe in half.

And with banana or yogurt one might not need the citric acid or vinegar because those things are acidic on their own.

I'd say the heat definitely helps and I'll go for more next time.

Thanks for the tip about the hand blender, Swaves. That worked well and was much nicer to apply.

O.K. So I have this PT on my head again. Here is what I did.
1 1/8 tsp gelatin (1/2 a packet)
1/8 c water
1/8 tsp ACV
5 drops olive oil (about 1/8 tsp)
1/4 mashed banana
squirt of conditioner (maybe 1-1 1/2 tsp)

This was just enough for my thin, fine, chin length hair. It gelled before I got around to using it. I popped it in the microwave for a few seconds and it was liquid again. So I'm guessing if you wanted to save some for another time, that might work. The consistency seemed less drippy. This could be because I had a larger ratio of banana. I froze mashed banana in 1/4 banana portions, so I just used all of it and it seems fine. I skipped the honey because I add some to my rinse out and it seemed redundant.
