Cutting fine wavy hair

I am going for (another) haircut this week. Previously, I had a just past shoulder length layer cut with side swept bangs. This cut made my straight underlayer stick out under my waves in the back.

I had it cut to a shoulder grazing bob with minimal layering. This is weighing my hair down and the bangs just don't blend so I have an odd stack on the sides.

I was readIng older threads on hair cuts. One said the longest layer should not be shorter than your chin when wet and the layers cut to 45 degrees. Anyone tried that? I have had my layers cut 90 degrees most often resulting in that mushroom shape.

This post is probably post-haircutl for you. We have somewhat similar hair. Fine and thin. A 90 degree cut will give you too many layers and then the curls won't have the bulk they need to curl. It can look cute if you're not going for maximum curl/wave. I know because I did this to my hair and now I'm waiting for it to grow enough to fix!

A good place for layers is one around cheekbone (unless your waves don't wave until they're a bit longer than that), or jawbone, the rest works well to layer it at a lesser angle than 45 degrees for fine hair (I did that one and did it wrong too)!

Hope your cut went well!

IAgirl, I think you cut your hair at 180 degrees. Correct?

I cut my own hair and I'm hardly an expert. But with the exception of my most recent hair cut, I cut the sides of my hair at 90 degrees and the back of my hair at 135 degrees. This cut has worked for my hair growing out from an ear length bob to just past chin length.

The 180 cut was okay -- but it cut some waves in the wrong place.

For my next cut in a couple months, I will be piecing out individual wavy spiraly bits on the canopy for shortest layers and cutting the rest pulled out to the side at about 40-45 from horizontal (the line of the hair points roughly towards or just above the shoulder) and then cut that hair at a taper from top to bottom because that enhances the wavy curls and takes out the wedge-y/triangle-y bulk.

I'm no expert either. I wish I had a fairy godmother (I almost typed "hairy godmother, giggle) to do it for me. And maybe give me curlier curls to boot.

Hey, CSJ, how was the cut?

Oops, lost this thread!

Well after that I ended up getting my regular old cut. I had her cut the layers at a less than 45 degree. It is skimming my shoulders and looking generally blah.

I am getting tired of my "hairdo" that has been the same for a while now even though I think I ask for something different all the time. Photos prove it looks the same since '09

I think I am going to chop it off when I go in Friday. I have been looking at the inverted bobs in the haircut thread. My under layer is nearly straight so no matter how she cuts the layers that under layer is always mocking me. Soooo I think I might just eliminate it!

:-) well that layer is gone now! It is only about an inch long. I told my stylist to do the opposite of everything I usually ask for. Instead of long layers, blunt ends, and bangs I had her cut the ends piecey, layers to give my hair a curved shape, stack the layers in the back and make it longer in the front. It is similar to an inverted bob.

CSJ, please post some pics!!!! I'm dying to cut my hair shorter into possibly an inverted bob and since our hair specs are somewhat similiar, I'd love to see what it looks like. Hope you're enjoyiing your new 'do!!!!

Not the best pictures but it is hard to take your own photo with a phone

The cut does leave my hair less curly, more wavy but that is ok. It is at least more consistent in its wave pattern now. With longer hair I have such distinctly different wave patterns -one or two ringlets, looser s-waves, and the goofy straight underlayer.

So do you find it easier to style now? Are your waves more defined?

I think it will be, I haven't styled as of yet since I hennaed it today. When it was cut she just ran some Aveda Be Curly and Confixtor and scrunched it as she diffused. The waves were good and more bouncy now that it's short.

I think it will also be easier since I won't be trying to get ringlets, just waves.
