Quickie Homemade Protein Treatment!!

So I"m really thinking a proteing treatment would help my hair....it's been kinda limp and just blah looking. I actually just ordered a small size of one on Silk Naturals but it probably won't be here for at least a week and I"m getting desperate. I know there's a recipe on Live Curly Live Free with an egg, olive oil and mayo but I only have reduced fat mayo....would it still work the same way? If not, is there anything else I could use around the house? I don't really have the money to buy anything else.....Thanks for any kind of help!!!!!

Do you have any of these things lying around to try IAgirl's homemade PT? If not they are all cheap!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I promised to post my PT recipe for those of us who like Aphogee 2-step but can't stand the smell.
This one works for me to add elasticity and shine:
1 packet unflavored gelatin
1/4 to 1/3 cup boiling water
1 pinch (a dash... a bit less than 1/8 tsp) citric acid or 1/4 teaspoon vinegar
1 - 3 drops of oil
Optional:
a couple teaspoons of conditioner
a teaspoon of honey
1/4 of a banana, pureed (honey and banana seem to add more body and shine)

Preparation: Completely dissolve the gelatin in the boiling water (in a cup is handy). Let it cool (if using honey, add while hot). Add the citric acid or vinegar and mix. Add others (oil, conditioner, banana) when it cools to touchable temperature. Mix well.

Apply to washed, squeezed-dry hair. (if gelatin has cooled enough to gel, heat it a little to liquefy). Use with a plastic bag or cap for 3-5 minutes and rinse out really well. You can wrap your hair in a warm towel, or just let the shower run over the plastic cap.

Also, if you want to use it like Aphogee and blow-dry it in, you need to add between 1/4 and 1/2 teaspoon of magnesium sulfate (epsom salts) to help the gelatin coagulate in the heat rather than liquefy. There may be a benefit to the epsom salts aside from the coagulation aspect but if your hair hates them, skip it.

The gelatin is hydrolyzed collagen. The acid helps keep the protein in a form that your hair can use (I checked this out in a textbook before posting).

This feels more "drying" than Aphogee because Aphogee 2-step has lots of other ingredients to prevent that dry, rough feeling. But a good conditioner after the PT will help a lot. Doesn't have to be a DT.

Make sure you get the gelatin fully dissolved! If you see little balls or blobs of gelatin in the liquid, it's not dissolved and those will NOT want to come out of your hair.

I still use Tresemme Fine Mist hairspray for the side swept bangs...I can't live without it!
Curl Genie: Medium-fine texture, normal porosity, low elasticity, medium density
ITA. I was going to suggest IAgirl's PT too. Cheap and very effective.
Mayo will make your hair greasy if our hair doesn't like oils. Mayo is egg yolks + oil+a few other things.
Eggs have large proteins that are hard to get into hair. Gelatin has hydrolyzed protein which is the right size protein. If you do use eggs, be sure to rinse with cool water or they will cook on your hair.

2a (nc.com) 2bFi (Fia), very fine, thin, low/normal elasticity, porous, CG, doesn't get weighed down
Cowash: Tresemme naturals
Rinse out/leave in: Renpure Organics (red)
Curl enhancer: FSG
Gel: BRHG, Salon care aloe, Ecostyler Krystal (normal dews)
PT: ION effective care, IAgirl's gelatin PT
Low Poo: renpure (red), Ion swimmers
Thanks for the advice!!! If I can get to the store for some gelatin I'll definitely give it a try....hopefully the one I ordered will be here soon cause I'm dying to try protein!

Soy sauce is supposed to be a very good home protein treatment. I have been wanting to try it, but I hate the smell.

Hair: 2a or 3a (not sure), very porous and fine as frog hair
Day 1: Cowash and condition with AO GPB, ACV Rinse,
Co-Kra gel (this stuff is fantastic)

Day 2: KCKT, KCCC, plop, KCCC, plop again, air dry
Day 3: Curly Kinks Satin Roots, Coil Jam
Day 4: IAGirl's PT, KBB DT, FSG

Co-Kra gel is my own concoction of okra boiled in coconut milk. It is a cross between FSG and KCCC and leaves my hair very soft and shiny
I have been dying to try IAgirls protein treatment, as so many have raved about it!

What I have used as a quick protein treatment is egg, honey and evoo. It is really easy and my hair loved it. I do know that many on these boards have rightly pointed out that egg protein is not supposed to absorb into the hair (sorry if I am wording this wrong, I am in the useless humanities) but I found that my hair was super curly and soft after this treatment. Thus, I am not sure if it is an effective protein treatment for all, but my hair liked it just as much, if not more, than AO GPB.
Recovering from a lifetime of blow drying and straightening my hair- 2b with a some kinky 3 in the back

Hair properties- medium course texture, medium elasticity and medium-high porosity

Wash- Deva No Poo, GTTT

Condition- Aubry Organics HSR, GPB,

LI- Dr. Bronner's Magic Organic Hair Cream, Deva One

DT- CJCR, Egg, Honey and EVOO

Stylers- JCRR, KCCC
I finally broke down and tried the soy sauce. It actually worked pretty well, but the smell was awful and stayed in my hair. I ended up using shampoo to completely rid myself of the odor. My husband swore he could not smell it, but I could. Bottom line, if i could find a way to neutralize the odor I would use it again, but it did not work as well as the store bought protein treatments.
My hair hates oils and eggs don't seem to do anything. Does anyone have any other ideas?

I second IA girls PT. I did one this weekend, followed by a homemade DT, and all I can say is WOW! We have dews at 5 today and my waves are popping and super springy!

"I will definitely try the IA. What is your recipe for the homemade deep condish?"

I just mixed aprox:
1T coconut oil
1T Grapeseed oil
1T Suave Naturals coconut condish (to thicken it up)

I wrapped my hair in plastic wrap and put a turbie towel over that and let it sit for a bit.

Gratuitous pics:!
Before: (I should note this is naked hair)

Wow! Great curl. Thank you for sharing the recipe. I wonder if my hair hates all oils?
