Default when to protein? I'm confused

Is protein to add moisture/shine or is it to pull away what has built up? I am confused! Since beginning my experiments my hair isn't shiny and is feeling dry so I am looking to moisturize.

TIA

Do you already use products with protein in them? Do you know your hair properties?

Here are a couple good links on protein.
The Fine Art of Protein and Moisture Balancing for Black Hair Care - Associated Content from Yahoo! - associatedcontent.com
Protein vs Moisture « Pittsburgh Curly

Protein fills in the "holes" in the cuticle of the hair in porous hair. Protein helps shore up the structure of fine hair by adding protein to the hair's cortex. Fine hair is low on protein in the cortex and coarse hair usually has plenty. Protein doesn't add moisture. Some protein treatments contain both moisture and protein. In porous hair, protein can help your hair hang on to moisture by sealing the holes that moisture is escaping out of.

sweet...I think the confusion is beginning to fade. I'm pretty sure I need to protein treat at this point. I don't think I am using any protein products currently. I say, "I don't think" because my eyes are what they used to be and the morning is the worst.

Thanks for the replies!
