Not a cowash, but a moisturizing wash!

I think the FSG might work for somebody else - maybe with more porous hair or drier hair than mine. Maybe you need to add a bit of glycerin to the FSG.

Seems to me that darn near all the aloe gets rinsed out. So... WTH! Surely there are some compounds that get bound to the hair, temporarily.

If you try it and hate it, just blame me I can take it.

Ha ha, I won't blame you -- just my hair!

Bummer the FSG wash didn't work. That would've been so cool if it did! I might have to try the aloe vera wash with my Lily of the Desert aloe gelly just to see what it would do. I mean, most of it is getting rinsed out, right? I don't know -- I hate doing stuff to my hair 1) that I'm probably going to screw up or 2) that is probably gonna make my hair look bad! I guess I could do it on a "not going anywhere day," but I really don't have many of those. UGH! Decisions, decisions...

Tried an avg wash again today. Loved the moisture and softness I felt when I washed it out. I'm not sure what conditioner to use after or if I should even use a conditioner. As I said before, I'm using the avg like a leave-in right now and it really helps with frizz. I'm tempted to try rinsing after washing and then just adding some more on before adding stylers.

What does the glycerin do? I saw some at Whole Foods when I bought the avg, but that was before I tried this. I'm not sure if I should get some or not.

I thought the glycerin would make my scalp happier. Straight AVG is kind of acidic.

Ok girls that have tried this...I was all set to get the AVG edible aloe gel and the problems I see:

It came in a 1/2 gal container the smaller one had added sugars to it. I don't even mind the qty but it looks like the shelf life is only 1 month????? It's way too big to be taking up room in my fridge are you guys finding the smaller size without added ingredients?

I got mine from a "health food" type place, I think it's a bit more than a liter and has no added sugars. The last one I had included citric acid. Hmm, that 1/2 gallon is a problem. This is the problem with being a web-based forum, I'd just give you half a cup of the stuff to try...

Is there a symbol on your bottles ladies of what the shelf life is? That gigantic jug definitely had 1m with a lid top symbol. I suppose you were drinking the stuff anyway it wouldn't be so bad

I didn't notice a symbol or date on mine. I'll have to check it out.
Mine is a topical one that has a preservative(s) in it. The clerk at Whole Foods told me that only topical ones can sit out. The ones for dietary purposes need to be refrigerated.

So I tried it today with FOTE and glycerin.
It is confirmed. My hair just doesn't like aloe. Producty frizz.

I decided to browse Walgreen's again today. I found a jug of FOTE aloe vera juice. It is 99% aloe with citric acid and sodium benzoate (a preservative). It does not need to be refrigerated. I have some flax seeds soaking in it right now!

pedah you washed your hair with FOTE aloe gel not aloe juice???? How does your hair normally respond to glycerin?

curlyserf that sounds like the one I saw, doesn't it have the 1M symbol on it??

I have to try this tomorrow night. My hair likes aloe and I'm searching for a new cleanser. Every conditioner I've tried for co-washing so far is a no-go.

One question- How much aloe vera to the glycerin? Or does it matter?
Cleanser: Liquid Castile Soap diluted in a foaming soap dispenser
Rinse:
ACV rinse
Detangler/Conditioner:
Oyin Handmade Greg Juice or Juices and Berries
Stylers: Botticelli Botanicals Styling Mudd, KCCC, Honey Rinses and BRHG, Crack Leave-in Hair Cream when straightening

Tools: Silk pillowcase, Floursack towels, Jersey T-Shirts, Wide Tooth Comb, Velecta Paramount TGR-VQX Hair Dryer (for when I straighten) and BaByliss PRO Ionic Rollabout Hard Hat Dryer

I made some FSG tonight (I couldn't wait for the seeds to soak overnight - I only let them sit 3 hours). We'll see how it does in the morning!

Okay, I think glycerin might be a no-no for some folks.

I'm using aloe and glycerin on my not-very-porous hair and it loves it. Curlyserf's fine, not-so-porous hair also likes it.
Pedaheh says it gives her producty frizz on her porous hair.
I wonder if this is a trend...
DH's porous hair liked it, but only in combo with coconut oil.

Del - can you buy the big jug and freeze some of it? Maybe in ice cube trays? I think that "gel" and "juice" are used interchangeably.

IAgirl- I wouldn't come to any conclusions based on my hair. My hair is atypical and weird.

My hair does fine with glycerin in normal dews. I tried not to add too much, but it still may have been too much. So, yeah, it could be the glycerin too.
I didn't think it would work, but I wanted to give it a shot anyway. Sometimes things that shouldn't work actually do work.

I may just have to bite the bullet and get that big 'ol jug. Freezing it of course is another way to extend the life of it, why didn't I think of that? I've heard Aloe juice can work wonders on your insides In the Summer when I go to the beach I always put a good amt of FOTE Gel on my hair after swimming and this keeps it under control and gives it some definition. This makes me hopeful that my hair may respond well to this in rotation with other cleansers. If I wash my hair and add FOTE different story POOF city unless I use another syler. Winter different story, Aloe works in any shape or form. Picky eh?

It is the atypical and weird that is most thought-provoking! Your fine hair has more cuticle per ounce or gram of weight than a average or coarser hair, and yet it is porous. Therefore it soaks up products through those porosities, and because it's fine, there's not a lot of buffer, if your fine hair measures 40 microns in diameter and a product soaks in, say, 1-2 microns (I'm totally making that up, might actually be less - or more), then the product has penetrated that far in all the way around, and therefore anywhere from 5 to 10% of each hair is interacting with product, whereas if less-porous hair does not let much product through, then that product is interacting with far less of the actual area and a totally different substrate.

If person's hair is 90 microns in diameter and the product soaks in 1-2 microns, that's only 1-2% of the hair's cuticle and cortex interacting with products.

Major oversimplification, probably even just a red herring, but still, you get my drift. And because your hair is more cuticle-by-weight than a hair with a lot more cortex and medulla, and the cuticle does a lot of bonding with stuff -- voila! Weird and atypical hair.
You possibly get more hold from products because of this, but also more product-y problems.
Plus your weather is probably pretty lousy lately and you're well deserving of some real spring and not too much wind.
http://science-yhairblog.blogspot.com/
I like it! I didn't add glycerin to it. Not too much moisture, like co-washing, but it is moisturizing. I didn't use any conditioner, but I did use curl cream to style. My hair is practically dry by now and it looks and feels great. Nice and shiny and lots of spirals!
