Not a cowash, but a moisturizing wash!

I tried this last night and am going to try some variations.
I can't cowash, it usually weighs my hair down, makes it dull. But when I swim or am out in the sun and wind, I need a little extra moisture. Just not the waxy, creamy kind!
Moisture isn't exclusively emollients and creamy stuff, right?

I washed my hair with aloe vera juice and glycerin. Fantastic!
It was clean (aloe has cleansing properties and is good for the skin) and very shiny and moisturized - which I can tell because spirals form near my scalp.
I used plain AV juice, 2 tablespoons plus a teaspoon of glycerin. Tonight I'll try a commercially prepared AVG.
You'll probably need conditioner afterwards.
Sensitive skin people, use with caution, AVG is moisturizing, but the pH or straight Aloe Vera Juice is around 4 and that can be a little irritating (itchy), even though the pH of your skin's "acid mantle" is somewhere between 4 and 5. A commercially prepared AVG (I have Lily of the Desert AloeSorb 80) has a pH of around 6 and might be more agreeable.

Anyway, AVG is a great hair wash for adding moisture while getting things nice and clean. Glycerin is optional. I'm thinking especially of Pedaheh and her quest for a cowash and also of ththd who is looking for shine and bounce without overconditioning.
Next up, washing with FSG!

Please let us know if anybody tries it.

When I was in my 20s my skin was very reactionary; it would just about explode from anything - sunscreen gave me huge spots and puffed shut eyelids, makeup bothered me, rosacea too, just hypersensitive for awhile. It's better now (much better) but back then I did use aloe gel to wash my face and it worked well and kept it calm.

Never really thought it was WASHING it though! I just figured it was OK because I was keeping everything else off my face so there wasn't really anything to wash off.

Style: ReCoil & DevaCare Arc Angel (budget choices are HESMU or Got2BSpikedUp)

Yep, it's full of compounds that can cleanse away oil and hydrate the skin. It has alpha hydroxy acids (exfoliant) and sugars, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes (break down fats and dead skin cells and other gunk) and other good things the plant needs to live - and also to taste bad to avoid being eaten. Just in case the spines don't stop you.

I love the idea, but my hair and aloe don't get along. If I ever buy aloe juice for another reason, I'll give it a try.

I wonder about FSG, though. If one made FSG using chamomile and rosemary (or lavender buds), it would also be nice and cleanse-y and moisturizing.

I'm gonna try it!

Aw, man! I would've DEFINITELY tried this if my hair liked aloe. My aloe jelly just pretty much spells disaster when used on my hair! The fact that it's actually cleansing amazes me! That's so cool! If you try out the FSG with the lavender or chamomile or rosemary, definitely let us know! I'd be curious as to what that would do!

FSG wash was not as impressive - for me. Maybe it works great for somebody else. I just like to have something to slop around on my head when I "wash" my hair without shampoo. I know, I'm brainwashed.

That's how I shop too. No messing around looking at things I am not there for. Period! You can get aloe vera gel (with other stuff in it to thicken and add color) at a drugstore or wherever sunscreen is sold (it's usually in with that). Fruit of the Earth is a brand often referred to on NC.com. Or you can get it at a health food/natural food store and get the plain juice or other brands.

Glycerin is at drugstores, although you have to hunt or ask somebody to help you find it (usually). I've bought it in short, translucent bottles, but they sell bigger ones at heath food stores.

I'm a shopper/browser. I've seen aloe vera juice in either walmart or target (or maybe both) in the old people drug section. It was in like gallon containers, so I guess people drink it?? I have no idea.
Evidently some walmarts keep their coconut oil by the vitamins. My walmart doesn't carry it at all. Extra virgin is preferable, if you can find it.
I got glycerin at a craft store in the soap making section.

I am still loving the aloe and glycerin! I used it for a conditioner after water-washing and got spirals and curls (without products, although those make a huge difference). And frizz, but I don't style my hair after I "wash" it, I let it dry and go to bed...
I'm totally re-thinking "conditioner" for fine, low-porosity hair now. Do I really need to coat my hair with "emulsifying waxes" and creamy/oily emollients all the time? Guess there are other options.

DH's normal to high porosity, "gray" hair even likes the aloe (makes it softer and curlier), but it likes coconut oil even better, so there's definitely a difference for different hair types.

IAgirl forgive me but I'm a little confused........Are you saying that making a mixture of FOTE & Glycerin would have the same cleansing effect as the Aloe Juice mixed with Glycerin?

Might be like the difference between fresh orange juice and frozen concentrate...

I did see that there are at least 2 kinds of FOTE.

Bummer the FSG wash didn't work. That would've been so cool if it did! I might have to try the aloe vera wash with my Lily of the Desert aloe gelly just to see what it would do. I mean, most of it is getting rinsed out, right? I don't know -- I hate doing stuff to my hair 1) that I'm probably going to screw up or 2) that is probably gonna make my hair look bad! I guess I could do it on a "not going anywhere day," but I really don't have many of those. UGH! Decisions, decisions...

My FOTE says 100% aloe on the front and has 8 ingredients listed. Aloe first, then water second. Not what you think when you read 100% aloe.

I think the FSG might work for somebody else - maybe with more porous hair or drier hair than mine. Maybe you need to add a bit of glycerin to the FSG.

Seems to me that darn near all the aloe gets rinsed out. So... WTH! Surely there are some compounds that get bound to the hair, temporarily.

If you try it and hate it, just blame me I can take it.
