It really depends on what you add to it. Some people use it as a curl enhancer by adding epsom salts (magnesium sulfate). Some add honey or agave nectar for hold (the more you add, the stronger the hold). Many people add oils to hold in moisture. Most add a combination of these things.
When I made it, I typically added epsom salts, agave nectar, and some jojoba oil to counteract any dryness from the epsom salts. I usually needed to add a harder hold gel on top for my fine, hard-to-hold hair. If you need only a little hold, you may not need to add anything on top of the FSG.
Here's a thread that talks all about making FSG and the many add-ins people have tried. It's a very long thread and has been around for a while, so it may be daunting at first. I took my time and read a page or two at a time and jotted down a couple notes on info that jumped out at me.
