PT gave me stick straight hair & need of general advice

I did a gelatin protein treatment, left it in for an hour, washed it out, conditioned and went to bed. The next morning was straighter than it's ever been in my life. Seriously, it was kind of amazing.

I guess I just need some advice again.
Details: I admit I am very on again/off again about trying to achieve waviness in my hair, but I firmly practice no-cones and no harsh sulfates, so I've got that going for me.
My hair feels dry when I shampoo it, but it looks limp and lifeless when I don't. It is very porous (I color the gray roots monthly) and gets weighed down easily. I started using FSG this week, and it has added a little more body so I can see that being the base for something more successful. Most gels (KMFUM) or mousses (aveda phomollient) make my hair feel and look very dry and dull.
No doubt I need more moisture, but everything I try (suave, GVP balm, nature's gate, desert escense coconut) seems to weigh it down. I don't use a leave-in, that just leads to stringy city.

Any advice from the fellow 2a peeps?

Too much protein will make some hair straight (mine). An hour of the gelatin PT is a very strong PT. Most people do more like 5 minutes under the shower. Lay off protein for the time being and keep adding moisture. That should balance out the protein and bring you back to normal.
ETA: When your hair is back to normal, try ion effective care as a rinse out. It is a PT that is moisturizing and some use it as a rinse out. May or may not work, but they sell 2$ trial packets, so it is worth a try.
You can add more hold to FSG by soaking the seeds overnight. You can also add things like xanthum gum or hydroethylcellulose (sp?) to add hold and thicken it. Some people use cornstarch, but IDK if anyone with fine hair has tried the cornstarch.

Thank you so much, I didn't know that an hour protein treatment was overwhelming - I looked in some of the threads about protein and people talked about leaving in for the evening and I just thought that's what you were supposed to do.

I've been moisturizing and using the FSG and focusing on trying to grow it out and fighting the desire to hack it off as it is in an annoying stage right now. I'll try and be patient.

I get the same reaction if I don't clarify my hair before doing a protein treatment. Applying protein to my hair when it's overconditioned will just make it act more overconditioned. But if I clarify and then do the protein treatment, my hair reacts as it should: getting more curly and bouncy.

If I don't clarify first, even 5 minutes of protein will straighten my hair. If I clarify first, an hour of protein is just fine.

I get the same reaction from the gelatin treatment, I found that low pooing and no conditioner for a couple of days helped it really spring up. I've had better results from the Sally's k Pak and nexus emergencee. I found that my hair (while it craves moisture) easily acts like a brat if it thinks it has had too much conditioner. My curls form better when I err on the side of slightly underconditioned.

Ditto. When my hair dried after the gelatin treatment the first time, it made my hair so smooth and straight, but not the effect I was going for. However, while my hair was wet, it was the curliest it's ever been, then dried the straight (which usually happens, but not that curly when wet, and at least a slight wave when dry). Next time, I'll try clarifying before doing a protein treatment.

This happened to me too, about a year ago. I never dared to do another gelatin PT. But I also used it mixed with conditioner, and oils.

You could try a salty Spray (beach spray) or a hairmist with some honey added to it and scrunch with a bit of AVG.
That has helped me that time.

You just reminded me, I've been planning on trying that but I keep procrastinating.

I guess I'll revive this thread...

I'm having similar issues. The first time I tried the gelatin PT (about 20 min) my hair got super soft and relaxed into 2A, maybe even less wavy than that, from the 2C that it normally is.

Since my daily LI has quite a bit of protein in it (and has been making some of my hair into beautiful ringlets) I was expecting to see something magical with a PT and that did not happen.

Someone else suggested I left it on too long. So this time around, instead of gelatin, I used Joico K-Pak Reconstructor and left it on for only 3 min (package instructions). Then I used Biolage Conditioning Balm as my DT, and left it on for 1/2 an hour...

Same thing! My hair was crazy soft and flyaway. When I put gel in it it got really sticky/crunchy/strawlike (while still wet) and I knew something had gone wrong again. It's dry now, and in a messy bun. I'm thinking an overnight DT is warranted.

I think I'll try ONE MORE TIME, this time I'll remove PT from my daily products and then just try the PT once a week with an overnight DT. If that doesn't work I'll abandon the whole PT fiasco...so sad!
