IAgirl - help with an allergic reaction!?

I know this is a bit off topic....

Had an allergic reaction to this product today (oil of olay night cream) - it was quite dramatic - my lips swelled up like they used to when I was a kid and got hives all over....what in this ingredient list is the most likely culprit?!

WATER, GLYCERIN, CETYL PALMITATE, CETYL ALCOHOL, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, STEARYL ALCOHOL, ISOPROPYL PALMITATE, DIMETHICONE, CARBOMER, PEG-100 STEARATE, STEARIC ACID, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, DMDM HYDANTOIN, IODOPROPYNYL BUTYLCARBAMATE, EDTA, PEG/PPG-18/18 DIMETHICONE, FRAGRANCE, TITANIUM DIOXIDE, RED 4.

Oh good heavens, your poor lips!

I'll try to make the things I would heavily suspect in blue:
WATER, GLYCERIN, CETYL PALMITATE, CETYL ALCOHOL, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, STEARYL ALCOHOL, ISOPROPYL PALMITATE, DIMETHICONE, CARBOMER, PEG-100 STEARATE, STEARIC ACID, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, DMDM HYDANTOIN, IODOPROPYNYL BUTYLCARBAMATE, EDTA, PEG/PPG-18/18 DIMETHICONE, FRAGRANCE, TITANIUM DIOXIDE, RED 4.
Okay, now to explain the "suspects"...
Isopropyl palmitate can cause dermatitis and contact allergy. And you might be okay with this one on different parts of your body - it can be site-specific.
Anything with PEG or PPG preceding it(Polyethylene glycol or Polypropylene glycol) has the potential to be an allergen or irritant, and they are also penetration enhancers, so if not the culprits themselves, they could be making the problem worse in that way.
DMDM hydantoin is a formaldehyde-releasing preservative, at least 3% of people have a sensitivity to preservatives in that class.
Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate is a preservative which can be a contact allergen also.
And naturally, suspect fragrances and colorings.

You might look at other products you have on hand or have used in the past and check for those ingredients to see if you can eliminate any of these as not a problem in other formulas.

HTH!

Thanks! I will be more vigilant - I usually try to use stuff that has simple ingredients that I can understand or that say they are hypoallergenic...a zyrtec and a benadryl melt later the lips are back to normal...lol. Stupid allergies!

Glad things got better. Hope you can figure out what to avoid - that particular product at the very least. I hate it when I buy something new and then it's useless to me and I dare not give it to my sensitive sister!

Yep, its going to the trash heap along with a whole load of other stuff - my daughter is too sensitive to use this stuff too. I am sure it would cause her problems.

Welcome to my world. Sigh....I can totally relate. Just a suggestion though, I know you have celiac from your siggie and I know a lot of Oil of Olay is wheat free, but it could be that there's hidden wheat in there, most likely in the fragrance. Just a thought.

Ugh sorry that you had such a bad allergic reaction! Last time I had a reaction like that is when I took a certain antibiotic!

Also, I would always keep your receipts. I used the yes to carrots conditioner three times and got terribly itchy from that. I kept the receipt and returned it at Target for a full refund. They didn't even bat an eye!
