Dry climate :(

I wish we could more desert-y people posting what works for them. I"m from NM and trying to use up my Devacurl. Although believe it or not, my issue right now I believe is protein because my shed hairs are looking VERY stretched and broken. But anyways. . . my questions are the following:
For those of you who seal, which I think is great, but if you water wash every other day you don't lowpoo, . . . you restyle daily, how do you know when to add oil and when not to seal, because if you seal daily, it's going to build up and when you shower, it's not going to all come off and in the end it can dry out your hair. I used to use coconut oil for styling, no gel, nothing, and it looked so great, but in the long term it left my hair dried out, because no other moisture got in. so I'm wondering a lot about that!!

Also, any of you find it's better not to use gel at all? since it's drying too??
And finally, is flaxseed not a humectant because it has the similar texture to aloe gel and I would think it's also a humectant. I love the natural jellyies, but unfortunately they're all aloe-based. Would love to find something natural and workable for the desert!! No cactus gelly or something???

Maybe you should alternate using another oil besides coconut or use a leave in along with it? I've never really had any problems with build up, but you could occasionally clarify with baking soda followed by an ACV rinse or your choice of clarifying shampoo.

The only time I notice any problems with gels drying my hair is if glycerin is high in the ingredients list. If I do decide to use a gel that contains glycerin, I will use a heavier/richer leave in and that seems to help. I do rotate my products though.

I'm not sure about FSG being a humectant, I've never really noticed any problems/issues using it, except when I was adding glycerin to mine. I hadn't really thought about it until you mentioned it .

I see it's already in your siggy, but I was going to recommend AOMM. How about okra gel?

I like the results I get with botanical spirits gel, and even KCCC and I do have AOMM, but I haven't used it in a while. The thing is technically Im rotating products, but look at the ingredients and they're almost the same. I'll have to try oil again and maybe rotate. But do you think then if I restyle daily, I could get away with using oil daily???? My worry is that article taht says it just sits on the hair, isn't absorbed, and then it will start to seal off moisture. also, do you just do ends with it, or do you do whole length, or scrunch with it???

UPDATE:
I've tried the following products only once but see are my first impressions.

Jessicurls gentle cleansing shampoo with added babassu oil=great results so far. will alternate with co-washing.

Renpure Argan oil conditioner-very "slippery" and a light perfume scent. So far I like it. Felt silky going on. I will try as a leave in next time.

Joico joiwhip-used it after leave in, sealing, recoil...results, very soft and defined clumpy curls....I'm very pleased so far. I love the scent.

3-in-1 mousse (purple)-used same as the joico...results were very similar to that of the joico...so far I like it as well.

I also purchased the pink 3-in-1 mousse and will try later.

It seems that most people had good results applying the mousse over a styling cream oR using a gel over the mousse. I will keep experimenting to see which combos I like best.

I would like to purchase the renpure keratin conditioner soon. I'm also thinking of taking advantage of the sale on Regis line olive oil conditioner (BOGO 1/2 off). A liter is $17, which is a good price to begin with. I have used it in the past with good results.

Renpure Keratin conditioner gets lots of good reviews. Even though it has protein, is it something you can use daily as a rinse out, or every other day. Also, do you seal daily then, or every other day?? What do you use to cleanse? Low poo, or cowash, that would make a difference too. I can see you using oil all over for like a pre-poo, deep treatment, but when you use it to seal, do you just do ends, or whole length, do you apply to all the same parts where you apply gel?? I just don't want weigh down and no volume!!
What are your favorite oils for sealing??
I like Loreal eversleek leave-in, anti-humidity. Even though we would like some humidity, this stuff seems to work good for me in NM, because it does have oils, I guess I don't need to seal with this stuff. It has argan oil in it, STrong smell for sure and it makes my hair feel weird when it's wet, but then it's totally normal dry. I just try and apply everything from roots and work up so I don't get product crap in my scalp.

If I want more volume, I use lighter products for styling like AOMM, CEJ and top with a tiny bit of BRHG.

I co wash mainly with suave (I like a variety, coconut, forever sunshine...and one I can't find anymore). I have cowashed with cure care as well and some of my regular conditioners.
I also love CJ daily fix and I'm currently using jessicurl gentle cleansing shampoo with either coconut oil or babassu oil added (25% oil, 75% shampoo).
Shampoo bars are another favorite...chagrin valley and apple valley naturals. I have several faves.
I do a vinegar/water rinse on occasion, or when I remember. I keep a spray bottle in the shower.
I always seal (my hair LOVES this) and I apply the oil when I seal all over my hair but focus more on the lower half.
I hope I've covered everything but will be happy to answer any further questions.

Wow you're awesome. You have covered it pretty mjuch. No need ever for a sulfate poo??
When you add oil to your lowpoo do you add it to the whole bottle at once or just what you use at the time/? Why just that lowpoo, are others you use more moisturizing?? I dno't want to get crazy and add oil to all my lowpoos!!

And finally, when you water wash, will you seal then too?? And your faves for oil are olive oil and jojoba, right?? thanks, I do like what my argan oil did do to my hair, it's so soft!! Thanks

For the oil shampoo, I mix some up in a 2 oz bottle which is enough for a few washes, not the whole bottle. I chose that low poo for 1. It has coco betaine, 2. It has very simple ingredients and is very gentle.

Yes, I seal as well when I water wash. My favorite oils for sealing are camellia oil, EVOO, coconut oil, babassu oil, EO's serum and Darcy's botanicals coconut oil mix (has jojoba, coconut, and camellia). I have also mixed coconut, EVOO and camellia and use that blend with great results. I would like to try Argan oil too but I have to use up what I have first!

I feel your pain with the gel/gelly issue! I just posted in another thread about giving up gel altogether, and sticking with condish only styling or creams/cream gels. I just got a bunch I samples of gelly type stylers, so we'll see if any of those work out, but I also seem to have an issue with aloe. I thought I really liked FSG, but lately it has not been working and I'm wondering if it acting like a humectant as you mentioned above. I did okay with SS CEJ, but not so much with the CRN curl maker (not sure though if it was the curl maker, or that the LI wasn't moisturizing enough). I will keep experimenting and report back

I mentioned before that the CRN moisture milk/curl maker combo left my hair feeling a little dry - will try the curl maker with a different LI to see if I get better results.

Yesterday, tried the CK Satin Roots LI and the BS Stretch Curls Gelee - great combo! I washed with CJDF and used DB Pumpkin Seed condish for RO. I also did something a little different for sealing; I normally use my EO serum after my LI and before my stylers, raked/combed through my hair. This time, I used some DB Curl Styling LI Creme, but scrunched into just the ends and after all my other products (insteand in the middle). After I plopped/air dried, I had moisturized and touchably soft curls, with very little frizz and pretty decent curl definition. I was a little worried about the protein/humectants in some of the products, but no dryness or straw-like feeilng at all. I think this is a good product combo, but I also think the change to how I'm sealing may be something to experiment more with too. I didn't take any pics yesterday, but my second day hair is pretty good today (didn't have to do anything other than take my hair down out of the pineapple), so I've attached pics of today's hair.

Will keep experimenting and report back

Today I co-washed with TN moisture (first actual co-wash - no low poo or cleansing condish) then RO with GVP CB. Used my samples of DM hair whip and miracurl jelly, then sealed the ends with a little DB curl styling cream. My hair is very moisturized, silky and soft. In fact, I think I underestimated just how moisturizing all those products are, as my hair is a little limp/stringy and not as clumpy. I will try using less product next time, or maybe not doing the extra RO if I'm co-washing. I think once I figure out the right amount/application, the DM products will be a hit. I'm realizing that as my hair gets healthier, I need less product. Love that!

BTW, I'm really loving this change to my sealing routine; instead of sealing with an oil after my LI, I'm sealing after applying all my other products (including any stylers) - sometimes with oil, sometimes with a heavier cream that contains a lot of oils/butters.

After that I scrunch the cream into just the ends to seal, then plop. I might try this last step in the reverse order next time (plop, then seal with the cream) to see if that makes any difference.

I've been testing a few mousses (?) to see what combos work for me. So far, the best combo is...Leave in conditioner, FSG and top with GVP Paul Mitchell sculpting foam. I used the combo today and my hair looks great. I have volume and it's nice and clumpy!! I'm narrowing down my staples/favorites. I'm going to test out the other two mousses (?) that I have and see which I like the best. I have a few good combos that I'm loving with a variety of products. I like to have a variety of combos and products just in case I run out or something gets discontinued. I think I will reserve the use of oils for winter time when it's drier.

Quick update - As you know, I've been experimenting with different samples of LI and jelly type products. One of the jelly stylers is UFD curly magic - holy cow! Loving this stuff! I've used it several times, in combination wih several different LI and other products, and every time my hair is soft, shiny, and frizz free. I will usually sacrifice frizz control to get more touchable soft hair, but with this I don't have to. It is also glycerin free (great for our dry climates). To me it behaves a lot like FSG, maybe better. It gives good hold with no crunch (I hate the crunch, and dont like hard hold gels), and my hair feels moisturized but not weighed down (important for those of us with fine hair). I only wish it was less expensive ($25), but my results have been so good, I'll probably by it anyway.

Here are the ingredients: Organic Aloe Vera Juice, Aqueous-Infused Extracts of Marshmallow, Chamomile, Nettle, Horsetail, Vitamin E, Agave Nectar Extract, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate and Natural Fragrance.
