Default Hits and Misses

I don't know if there's a thread for the 2s like this yet, but I keep seeing the one in the 4a board and I think it would be nice to have one for the 2s. Basically, just list any successes and/or failures you've had and why you've had them.

I'll start

Hits: Sealing before applying product that previously caused frizz (I sealed with grapeseed oil before trying out a product that used to ALWAYS give me frizz, and this time no frizz)

Miss: Using 2-3 pumps of BASK Detangling Hair Milk (I think it ends up being too heavy for my hair and just pulls out my waves; may have potential with using half a pump or even just one pump)

Hits:
*modified CG - softer less poofier hair
*plopping - more defined curls
*IA girls FSG curl cream and super smooth flax curl cream - good finishing recipes/products for definition softness and nice light hold
* sleeping in a low and loose ponytail - hair is less out of control looking in the morning and easier to revive wurls without getting huge hair.
* baking soda with conditioner scrub and ACV rinse - scalp feels great, hair is shinier after.

Misses:
* humuctants (eg glycerin and aloe) - hair just seems more rough and bulky (could be my weather)
* pinappleing - causes deformed curls and a weird kink
* diffusing upside down - creates too much bulk on top .. looks weird with my face shape

Hits: Aubrey Organics GPB Conditioner- yay, protein!!

Misses: Lavender & Ylang Ylang scented Aubrey Organics GPB Conditioner

So I love the conditioner but should have gone with the regular version instead of the scented one. The scent did fade, but it was a bad move to use at all when I went straight to bed with a migraine last night (and about to do the same tonight).

I didn't even realize there were scents for the GPB conditioner until you mentioned it; glad you had such a good experience (minus the scent, feel better and sleep well ).

Not to be a gloomy Gus but I'm still trying to find my hits. Here are my misses though.

*Plopping
*Doing anything with my hair upside down

I think I'm still too new at this to have real hits or misses yet, but so far, here's what worked (and didn't)

Hits:
Getting rid of terrible tangles by cutting my hair.
Getting rid of my brush.
Only using my comb in the shower, while my hair is full of conditioner.
Trying things that didn't work again. (So many times, I didn't like the results, but later on I try again, and it works better this time.)
Getting a hair analysis. (Loved that, and got some great product recommendations, too!)
Compliments. When I'm having bad hair day and people compliment my hair, I'm able to keep working at this
Jessicurl products. They seem to work well for my hair.
Spiral Solutions products. They seem to work well for my hair, too.

Misses:
Coconut oil. I hate that stuff so much that I doubt I'll be trying it again, despite what I said earlier. I don't know if my hair hates it, but I sure do!
Plopping: I'll try again later, but plopping isn't working for me. I don't know if it's my hair or my technique, or both.

New hit: retrying BASK Detangling Hair Milk and Donna Marie Gelly - I tried using less of the BASK (half a pump this time versus 2-3 the first time); the BASK was a great leave in and the DM made my hair clump like no other (picture below)

Today ...

Hit: SM Curl and Style Milk. Best. Thing. I work a dime-size in to use to SOTC and every single time it gets almost all my frizz! And I really needed it because ...

Miss: HE TMS Mousse? SOTC too early? I don't know, all I know is, lots and lots of frizz and no definition whatsoever.

Hit: using a sulfate shampoo before doing a PT - although it really dried out my hair and made it tangly, it definitely helped the protein to penetrate my hair and made my waves perk up a lot

Hit: coconut oil! Did a 2 hour treatment the other night for the first time. Added lots of shine (healthy shine, not oily shine, haha). Love it!

Another hit: today I sealed with a tiny bit of oil (safflower oil b/c I had it on hand) and again today I have amazing shine. Hm, maybe I'm on to something here...

Miss: well, I have plenty of these. Like combing my hair out after products are in it - pretty much always a disaster even if I add water back in.
Or putting products in not-wet-enough hair, which makes my hair stringy and blah.
I also think mousses are becoming more of a miss than a hit for me; early CG I swore by HETMS mousse... but lately not so much. It feels really drying now and never makes my hair look as good as I know it can.

Agreed that combing hair after products are in is a miss. My hair just ended up very stringy.

Hits:
-Plopping
-Scrunching
-Organix Awapuhi Protein Treatment with heat. (revived lifeless hair!)
-Tresemme Naturals Shampoo and condish (before CG)
-2nd day hair with multiple buns when hair was longer
-SM Curl Enhancer Smoothie
-Getting rid of combs and brushes
-Fingercombing!!!
-Compliments!!
-Baking soda and ACV Rinse

Halfway Hits:
-Satin Night cap didn't stay on came off. Have a sateen pillow case, which doesn't help much better than a cotton one. It would stay halfway on with bobby pins, but half of my hair would only come out good.
-Deva Products work only when you use ALL of them together.

Misses:
-Organix Shampoo and Conditioner (Suflate free shampoo + Pretty much pure silicone condish= limp icky lifeless hair)
-Suave Naturals Coconut Condish. NEVER have gotten good results. Only condish I had for awhile because I was on a budget.
-Pineappling. Do NOT get me started on that.
-Deva Set Me Up Moisture Lock In

Miss: making a special trip out to a Whole Foods to get Aubrey Organics GPB conditioner, only to find out that store doesn't carry it.

Hit: Picking up some Avalon Organics Lavender conditioner instead. It has hydrolyzed wheat protein in it. My hair seems to love this conditioner!

Hits:
Biosilk Smoothing Cream paired with TIGI Control Freak. Better hold, awesome softness!

Miss:
Re-wetting my hair after it has dried. Always a disaster.

Next I'm going to try damp bunning to smooth my hair out a little. We'll see how that goes.

+1 on this.

You know, I keep trying this, and I keep failing in dramatic ways. You'd think I'd learn, but no... I keep trying to reclump or reshape or refresh by rewetting.

Hits:
-Protein, protein, protein - did I mention protein??
-HETT mousse
-LI, RR, hard hold gel, in that order
-My bowl diffuser
-Pixie diffusing upside down until 90% dry
-Applying product to really wet hair
-Fine tooth combing after product for distribution, then following the comb with my fingers to "ribbon" the hair and re-form clumps, then scrunching to re-activate curl formation.

Misses:
-Air drying. I have to get my hair as close to totally dry as fast as humanly possible if I want it to hold my tighter curls.
-Plopping overnight
-Any DT on a regular basis - I can OC but have never OD'd on protein
-FSG for anything other than a light LI-type application. I absolutely CAN overdo FSG, contrary to the most popular belief.
-Smasters technique
-Any attempt at 2nd day hair. It just doesn't work for me.

For me, it's not so much certain products have been total failures, it's been application and technique. I can get almost anything in my hair to look just like almost any other product if I apply them the same way. Nothing has been OMG-AMAZING!!! yet.
