Question New Products

For mother's day, hubby said he is going to get me some hair products so I can actually try some of the "nicer" ones. I don't feel comfortable buying them for myself normally.

Anyway I'm excited and from looking at signatures and product reviews, i was thinking about BRHG, CHS Curl keeper, ag recoil, l'oreal humidity defying leave in creme, sm curl milk. Idk if I can get them all, so I was hoping you guys could give me you input on which ones would be best to get. Thanks, I appreciate it!

What about getting most of them from Target? That way you can return it if it doesn't work and get something else. Great selection and no risk! They have all the SM stuff, Giovanni, L'Oreal, Yes to, KCCC, etc. Target and Whole foods must hate me, but I have been loving trying things out that I can return (unlike online stores).

Amazon and Aveyou have good shipping rates if you decide to go the online route.

I have had SO much trial and error, I def suggest going for things you can return! I learned the hard way.... I hesitate to even give product recs cuz that's how I got stuck with so many bottles under my sink

Yes, definitely get them from somewhere with a good return policy! Target and Ulta are both wonderful

I can say that I LOVE the L'Oreal Leave In Creme. So awesome. SheaMoisture is also equally wonderful. Curl Keeper, on the other hand -- I've heard that product is very hit or miss. A few people love it, but a lot of people hate it, so I'm not so sure about that one! But if you get it somewhere with a good return policy, then by all means try it

BRHG is also very popular around here. I also really like Biosilk's Smoothing Cream.

Does target have a time limit on returns? I might return a couple things.

BRHG for sure, re:coil was meh for me, CK made my scalp burn and haven't tried the others! I think SM products can be heavy for a lot of people; the Smoothie was way too much for me.

I agree that Curl Keeper and re:coil are hit or miss products. Another thing you could do is get samples from kathymack or trial sizes of things from Spiral Solutions, Curl Junkie, and Jessicurl.

Wow, I didn't know you could return products from target. I bought a bunch of stuff before I knew about CG that's full of cones, and just sitting under my sink. Only used it once or twice. Maybe I should try to return it! Thanks for the tips.

I don't know if Target has a time limit on returns, but you also don't need a receipt to get store credit, so I'd give it a try with or without a receipt if you think it's been too long. Am I bad??...

I second trying stuff from Kathy Mack before investing in online purchases. She has most things and ships super fast.

BRHG is probably a must try, especially since it works for so many people and is so versatile. But it gave me stringy curls during the winter, I will have to try again now that the dews are up. SM weighed me down but many people swear by it.

It is really just so much trial and error that it could cost a person hundreds of dollars to get it right, only to have the season change again!

MSG, you are TOO funny! I was reading this in your other post, and you sound just like me...I return EVERYTHING. Target, Whole Foods, and CVS are awesome...If it doesn't work, it goes back! LOL Sorry, didn't mean to go off topic!

Target is good about returns. I ended up returning a broken straightener (half of it stopped working and I think I actually bought it at Walmart) but they took it back and gave me store credit...I must be evil.

I recommend the Curl Junkie sample pack. I ordered the one for stylers and now I'm a convert. :]

If my DH decided to buy me some hair products for mother's day (we don't have kids yet). I'd pick up some AG recoil and probably order some Spiral Solutions (I really want to try these out since my hair is fine.). Oh, and I'd probably order Curl Junkie Pattern Pusha.

Also, with heavier products, It's all about how you apply them. I know some just don't work for people, but I did figure out how to make SM work for me. I use a small amount of souffle on soaking wet hair followed by a small amount of smoothie. I make sure to evenly apply, scrunch, blot excess water out and normally air dry or diffuse lightly.

Curly Kinks products are really good. Very moisturizing and they smell heavenly. There's a sample pack on the curly kinks website you can order.

Thanks for all the helpful comments. After reading that helpful article posted by rapunzel4ever about proteins, I decided to try some products without proteins. Over the last week my hair was getting limp, and the waves were kind of stretched out looking instead of spiraling, although it was still very soft and shiny. I realized that almost all the conditioners/lowpoo I was using have lots of protein. I had already noticed that my ends were getting dried out and straw-like using LALSG, which also has protein. So as an experiement, I went with highly moisturizing purchases, trying to avoid protein.

I got Goddess Curls gel, tresemme naturals moisture conditioner, VO5 Tea Therapy nourishing condish, SM moisture retention shampoo, TIGI catwalk curls rock booster (wild random purchase, but it didn't seem to have anything harmful in it), and SN ocean breeze (just cuz mine was running out).

I washed my hair this afternoon with the SM poo, tresemme as RO, SN as LI, Goddess Curls for plopping, and the TIGI while I was diffusing. It turned out so soft and non-producty feeling. Also, my spirals were there, yay! I guess I was overloading protein or something, but I guess now I have things I can switch out for when I do/do not need protein.
