Default Duckbill clips?

My hair curls quite nicely with a diffuser, just not near my roots. At least the right side of my head, the left side tends to curl up decently with a diffuser, but the right side starts around my ear. I do part my hair on the left, so there is more hair on the right to pull the curls down, but it looks awful.

I've read about a bunch of people using duckbill clips to add volume and see pictures of how much curlier their hair is at the roots. I understand how you put them in...but how can you/do you diffuse your hair with them in? Maybe that's a ridiculous question, but I can't find anything anywhere on it and I don't have time to let my hair air dry (plus the ends look awful if I don't diffuse and curls aren't defined at all).

I also want to ask, if I try these, (or just in general), how wet should you hair be when you start to diffuse? And how wet when you put products in your hair?

I've diffused with duckbill clips in. I also aim the air directly at my roots, from a distance, for a bit so they dry faster and my roots maintain the volume better that way. I also spray a tiny bit of spray gel at my roots before I diffuse. The spray gel I have right now has little hold and no crunch.

I plop before I diffuse. It takes out quite a bit of the water that way. I apply products when my hair is soaking wet, but a lot of people don't. It really depends on your hair. Experiment with both.

Thanks! I think I'm going to try with the duckbill clips tomorrow. I want to pay attention to how I diffuse mine too, it makes me wonder if I dry it the same on both side (lol).

Iv'e tried plastic duckbill clips and I don't like them at all for root lift. I have much more success with jaw clips, or clipping up ALL of my hair. Some people use really small clips, but the ones I've been using are about 1inch wide.

This ^^ I put about about 20-24 "mini" or 1" clips around the crown of my head and part to cover cowlicks and random jagged separations down the back of my head. They do a good job of taking the pressure off my roots so that I can get some root curl and lift

I like good quality metal duckbill clips, both the long ones and the short two-prong ones without the little crossbar - the ones you buy in boxes at Sally's. Hate the plastic Deva clips - they warp and just don't hold as well even initially.

I also like small butterfly or octopus clips OK, but they tangle worse - I tend to do better with duckbills on their sides.

Whatever I use, I diffuse upside down for a few minutes first to get my curls going then flip upright and insert the clips. Then I may or may not diffuse a bit more rightside up. Usually I just air dry. I can remove the clips after they've been in 30 minutes or so and let it continue air drying without them - by that time my product(s) has set enough that the roots stay lifted. I just have to be sure to let it get absolutely dry before SOTC.
