New and Wavy!
Hi all! Brand spankin' new here, and was hoping to get a bit of guidance
From what I've read, it looks as though I have 2b/2c wavy hair. It's VERY flat at the crown, gets ridiculously knotted at the nape, is predominantly S curved but with a few loose spirals. When my hair was chin length, I could gel scrunch it to look almost permed (short hair photo attached), but it was never very consistent and the crown height was difficult to achieve. I have always assumed that my hair is fine and thin, though internet research would have me at normal for both.
I am hoping that transitioning to CG will yield more volume and spirals. Right now I feel a little bit like a witch
The long hair photo is from today, sitting right here, with NOTHING in it (I'm a wash and go gal). I'd love any and all guidance to help me along the way!
Thanks!

Thanks for the welcome! I've got an appointment Wednesday afternoon at Devachan - desperately in need of a trim, so I figured I might as well start off on the right foot
Right now I'm trolling the boards looking for product recommendations..

Just start with the basics: sulfate free shampoo, good rinse out conditioner, a good leave in if you feel you need more conditioner, and gel. Avoid silicones in your products. Experiment with techniques like plopping, diffusing, finger combing in the shower, etc. Once you start seeing some results, then start messing around with creams and stuff. I started with DevaCare low poo, One Condition and Arc Angell. Did that until I was getting consistent results (about 4 months) and my hair was in better shape, then added in other stuff to enhance what I was getting.

Basic sounds doable. I can forsee some slight issues in terms of styling (I get up between 4 and 5, shower and jet out the door), so I have no problem waiting for a bit before I add in styling products and more involved techniques.

I like to sleep as long as I can too. I'm thinking you might end up with a strong enough wave to wash/condition, scrunch in gel, and go. On my non-wash days, I literally sleep with my hair pineappled (loose ponytail right smack on top of my head) and then the next morning, take it out, give my head a shake, and off I go. I did that today and was able to get out the door 15 minutes after waking up.

Especially if you use a quick setting gel like Aussie Instant Freeze. I love that stuff, it's CG friendly, and it's CHEAP. It's like $3 for a tube of it at Walgreens, Target, etc... I mix a couple of drops of Biosilk Rock Hard Gel in with it for extra hold if I think I need it.

I dont know that I will be able to pineapple - most hair accessories leave dents in my hair. But I am game . Thanks for the product recommendations!

This is my problem with the pineapple, but it's better than waking up with a tangled mess of hair. I have very fine hair, so if I pineapple too loosely half my hair comes out while I'm sleeping, but if I do it too tightly I get a massive bump. I'm still experimenting, I've had okay results misting the offending bump with water and scrunching in a little product. I might have to invest in a sleep cap of some sort and just let my husband laugh at me when I wear it

Hair accessories leave dents in my hair too & I dont pineapple. I shower at night & dont style it, then water rinse in the mornings & then style. Much faster than doing my whole shower routine every morning. I sleep as late as possible too
I'd say your hair looks on the fine & thin side & the dent thing is a sign it's on the finer side too. Fine hair generally loves protein - mine does! I'd definitely check out a protein treatment & products with protein. I love IAGirl's gelatin protein recipe!

I have the TINIEST ponytails One of the reasons I love when it's on the curlier side is that it looks like I've got so much more hair!
I haven't switched to CG yet, but I did finger comb my hair this am in the shower and then just let it be - definitely an improvement. Even got a compliment on my hair this morning

My hair dents easily too with accessories. When I actually style my hair into a ponytail for exercise, etc., I wrap the ponytail holder around my ponytail 3 times. When I do it to pineapple, I only wrap it around twice. Tight enough to hold most of it in place overnight, but loose enough not to dent. I also use the really fat cloth covered ponytail holders, as fat as they can be without turning into a scrunchie, not the skinny ones.

I found that to avoid the dent with pineappling, I can use an old skinny ponytail holder (without metal). Old ones are more stretched out and aren't too tight or lose when wrapped twice around my hair.
I've never tried the scrunchie for pineappling, only old ponytail holders! Maybe give that a try if you can find one laying around your house. I've also been known to use the ponytail holder headbands and double it, then use it for a pineappling. I gotten great results from that! You have to experiment to find what works.

I like scrunchies for pineappling. I think the fact that they are covered with fabric helps. Also, don't put them leave the pineapple a little loose.
I write a blog for new wavies, if you are interested.

Man I wish pineappling worked for me. If i leave any hair tie loose enough to avoid a dent, my hair falls out of it. A scrunchie even doubled (wrapped twice) leaves a dent. My hair's too thin to slip it over just once.

I figure I will get a handle on cowashing first, and then attempt second day hair once I have some consistent hair days it's going to take a bit to get used to not having squeaky clean hair!
Got my cut at Devachan today.....a bit underwhelmed. My hair was definitely curler when I walked IN as compared to when I left. But I didn't expect miracles (though clipping at the roots is freakin amazing).
Keep the tips coming - it seems wavy may be more work than curly
It's funny having to research how to wash your hair....

I've looked around on the Type 3 boards a bit, and it seems that wavy is way more maintenance! Especially if you fall 2c/3a (like mine). My hair is never consistent-some days are more wavy, other days are like my pic and nice pretty curls. Hopefully going CG will help the consistency!
You're hair is gorgeous by the way!

I also had less curl when I left Devachan after my devacut. But once I started styling my hair myself the curl was much better than before. I never expect any salon to be able to style my hair as well as I can.
I pineapple to keep my hair out of the way while I sleep (was doing this long before I heard it called pineappling). I don't bother with second day hair. I cleanse (usually with a cleansing conditioner) every day and re-style. There are a few of us.

OK - about 4 days in and so far so good! I definitely feel like my hair is dirty, but it's not unlivable.
Timeline thus far - - Wednesday - Devachan cut
- Thursday - No poo, One Conditioner, ArcAngel
- Friday - Cowash with One Conditioner, ArcAngel with Aussie Instant Freeze
- Saturday - Cowash with Nature's Gate Tea Tree Conditioner, ArcAngel with Aussie Instant Freeze
Not clipping at the root yet (need to buy clips), not doing any plopping or ice queen, etc. Just finger combing, applying product when sopping wet, and scrunching dry with a microfiber towel. De-crunchifying my hair once it's dry.
Lighting is harsh (I work in a gym), but I have some really nice curls today!
