PT should make my hair feel...
I think I'm doing something wrong.
I have fine, porous hair so my hair should like protein (right?)
I've tried IAGirl's PT 4 or 5 times and each time I'm left with SUPER SUPER soft hair (that also dries nearly straight).
At first I thought perhaps I'd added too many things or too much of things, or over conditioned post-treatment so the past two times I've just done the basic recipe (gelatin, vinegar and oil) - using 1/2 a packet of gelatin (I have very short hair). The last two PTs were only a week apart and last night I didn't use a conditioner afterwards.
My hair FEELS fantastic but it's super slippery and has very little curl - shouldn't my curls be tightening up and/or getting some bounce?
Everything I've read says over-proteined hair would feel dry and strawlike - my hair doesn't feel like that at all. Does this mean I need even MORE protein? a different type of protein?
A little frustrated
thanks in advance
Perri

There are some people who get this kind of response to protein rather than the straw hair. So you might want to experiment a bit and see if your hair does ok with maybe a RO with some protein or maybe just a bit of protein in your styling products (which I think might be what some of the other women do). But it does sound like your hair doesn't like the PT very much.

thanks - in a surprising turn of events, this morning I water-washed only - again, no conditioner - added some control freak, KCCC and a bit of Re:coil and my curls sprung to life - that super soft feel is still there (somewhat but not as much)
No idea what's going on with my hair but could be I'm over conditioning or something (I did have to start leaving out my LI this week as my hair was getting limpy/droopy).
this is what it looked like AFTER being nearly stick straight this morning:

Looks great! I'm still voting for the PT being the culprit based on threads I've seen in another wavy hair community. (there are at least 2 other wavies that I know of who have the same reaction).

I don't know. PT made my daughter's curls tighten up a little... it seemed to, I don't know, rejuvinate them.

Agreed, Corrina and I are probably actually thinking of the same two people as a matter of fact. I would try her suggestion of a protein heavy rinse out or even maybe try a PT with a different type of protein; it could be your hair only likes specific types of protein.

Your hair looks a lot like mine! I am also growing out a pixie cut. I had one for 10 yrs, and didnt have wavy hair last time I had long hair!
I did a PT rinse today too, and I also had less curl.....

Thanks everyone. I haven't had this issue with products, even SS protein spray makes my hair happy, it just seems to kick up a fuss with the actual PT. The no conditioner then water rinse the next day seemed to help, so I'll try that approach again. Also plan to pick up some protein heavy conditioner, see what happens....
Thanks again guys

Even conditioners with protein make my hair feel like that. Amino acids make my hair straw like, but other proteins, like soy, just make it feel exactly how you described.
I've heard keratin is the only protein some people can use but I haven't tried it yet. I've never done a pt because of the way my hair reacts to protein in products.

I've had exactly the same experience with the gelatin PT. Other proteins can make my hair feel brittle and dry. Silk protein I'm okay with.
My guess is that you're protein sensitive. It could be your hair likes other types of protein more. But be careful with the amount you use and how long you let protein containing products sit on your hair. Try a protein conditioner before doing another full PT and see how your hair reacts.

Thanks again everyone, been doing a lot of thinking on this. I have had super short hair for years and before that was straightening it, it's been about 5 years since I let my curls out to play. My curl pattern in the past was much more defined and tight than it has been since going CG, but I attributed it to growing my hair out.
I've since dug through my memory banks and looked up ingredients for all the products I used to use. None of them had protein. So I'm reaching into my huge PJ pit of products and am going to limit all protein for a bit, then slowly add to see what happens.
Thanks everyone for taking the time to help me out.

Interesting, I did the gelatin treatment today and got that soft, limp hair you describe. I kinda like it though, because my frizz is also less. :P Interestingly, when I tried natures gate conditioners, which have hydrolyzed protein in them, they made my hair curly but stiff, which I didn't like at all.

I did a coconut oil deep conditioning after wards and my hair felt so great after it dried! Shiny, no frizz, not oily. I guess my hair is weird: it responded to gelatin as if I over conditioned it, then improved with oil. :P

My hair does this too. I'm still trying to find a good balance of protein/moisture.. protein-heavy RO (AO GBP) followed by a few minutes of a DT under a plastic cap seems to do good things for me.

I've been limiting protein all week and my curls are much better than they've been in weeks. I did use SSCEJ yesterday and was droopy again (but had some great actual spirals).
Ingredients: Ingredients: aloe vera juice, chondrus chrispus (sea algae extract), hydroxyethylcellulose, organic raw agave nectar, dehydroxanthan gum, panthenol, silk amino acids, dead sea salts, phenoxyethanol (and) caprylyl glycol (and) sorbic acid, fragrance, citric acid
Today I backed off again and my curls are more springy (although I am using a little re:coil which does have some protein).
Not sure if I was/am in an overload situation or my hair genuinely doesn't care for too much protein (I'm assuming time and patience will help me figure that out)
I do know it never would have occurred to me to back off the protein completely if it weren't for this thread and I've have been super droopy still!!

I wet my hair well, then take a finger- scoop of coconut oil, rub it out on my palms, and rake and distribute it through my hair. I might do this a few times until my hair feels saturated. Then I leave it there for as long as I can stand: I might just leave it for a few minutes, or I might take a bath, or put it up in a bun and do other work, or cover it and sleep on it overnight. That time, I took a bath for half an hour. Then I wet my hair again and wash with just a little mild shampoo, until the oiliness is gone, but my hair still feels slick. Then dry as usual. The hair shouldn't feel oily at all once dry.
OP: on another forum, someone thought this reaction might be due to not clarifying before the protein treatment. I know I didn't use any shampoo. (before or after)

ohh, didn't know to do this, either - I'll certainly give it a shot next time around (which won't be anytime soon, but I know I'll do it again in a few weeks to see what happens)
Thanks.
