Default A BC is bringing me to tears.

So I've had long hair pretty much my entire life except for a stint in college where I did a pixie cut and grew it back out. Let's just say short hair is not me. Saying that, short for me is shoulder length. Straightened it is normally between BSL and WL and more closely at WL so going shoulder length is an extreme for me.

However, since going CG, my curl pattern has gotten so strong that it's sort of in between my shoulders and just above at BSL which I don't mind. The problem is I used to have Carmel highlights that have totally faded to streaks of bright bleach looking blonde and with my brownish auburn natural hair it's giving the ends a fuzzy unkempt look. I know that part is also the worst with heat damage and straightening but it has improved a lot and is healthier than before. But it is still odd looking with the color and I can tell its got to go. I haven't color treated or highlighted for a year and the "root" growth is is a little past my ears. If I cut it just a few inches below the old highlights (which is about HALF the entire length) it will be really short for me and possibly even shorter with the curl pattern shrinking up the way it has. I'm having a hard time coming to terms with that. I don't want to color it at all anymore and I don't want to try to do that to cover the highlights.

My hair grows pretty fast but I'm really having a hard time making the appointment. On the other hand I cringe every time I look in the mirror. It's sort of a double edged sword. In fact, last night I almost cried to my husband when we discussed how much really needed to be taken off.

So really all I guess I need is to vent or gather some words of encouragement or thoughts? The idea of living without my long locks really upsets me and I've been pretty bummed since I came to the realization that I need to. Does anyone know of a natural way to cover highlights?

When ever I have gotten a major hair cit (from BSL to my chin, once) I think about all the bad things I went through with the hair I am getting rid of. And then, cutting the hair becomes getting rid of things in the past I am not happy about. Plus, your hair is going to look ever more healthy and more amazing once you do it! Maybe have the hair stylist only cut it to your shoulder blades in case you get some shrinkage. You can always cut off more. Maybe then it won't be AS traumatic.

I would say consider donating it to make yourself feel better but they usually wont take damaged hair. I cut 7" off mine 2 mos after going curly so I do understand - I'd had long hair for 10 yrs, my hair grows sloooooowwwww, & I was terrified but it did need to go cuz of damage and such. Plus, it was time for a change even tho short hair has never been "me" either. Know what? It was very liberating. I bounced up outta the chair beyond excited. It was like a fresh start on life almost. You say your hair grows fast, it will grow back. Do it in baby steps if you're too scared to do it all at once. You already know it's the best thing for your hair's health, you may find out you like it more than you thought you would :-). HTH!

Thanks for ALL the words of encouragement, friends! It's nice to know that it'll "be okay".

My biggest issue is the fact that almost everyone I know has said that I AM my hair. When they see me with photos of the one time in my life when it was short, they freak! That's the hardest part. It's facing very one after the fact. Also I've never stood out without my hair and now I'll have to! I was telling a curly friend earlier that there is probably a lot of psychology behind that, but I guess it will be liberating on a way.

I thought of donating it but I was looking at all the requirements and I think I fall short on a few. I'm gonna save it none the less. My mom wants it actually. It's weird but when my brother and I were little she'd save our hair clippings and sprinkle them in the garden and around her yard plants and trees because it kept the deer from eating them. Something about the human scent or something like that. So when I told her she asked for them.

I found my cut and after talking with my husband and getting his words of encouragement too we are both looking forward to it.

Plus I know it will be so much healthier looking and I'm looking forward to embracing my natural color again. I'm actually a little excited now!

I'll post pics as soon as it happens!!!

I bet it'll be beautiful and healthier, and by a lot of people's standards it will probably still be pretty long! Plus it will grow back, and probably twice as nice as before without the damaged ends. good luck, and I'd love to see a before/ after pic then!

Eta: thats really interesting about the hair keeping the deer away. I wonder if that would work with other animals...

It's supposed to work for deer, rabbits, and a few rodents. It seemed to work pretty well if I recall!

I'll def post pics! The style I picked would mean I'm cutting off 22"!! When straightened of course but last night DH helped me pull out some curl and measure with a ruler, and when that wasn't long enough we had to use a tape measure. Ha!

Come on.....No one is their hair. We all want to look decent but no one should take it too far.
I would have to think twice about someone who makes a big (negative) deal about me cutting my hair.

Maybe it's me....

It's not just others reaction. It's mine. I mean, to me as well, I am my hair. It's always been a big deal for me and I've pretty much been all about my hair. I'm proud of it. I'm not big one much of anything else like makeup or clothes so it's a big deal for me. Also as mentioned before there was a time when I went to a pixie cut but i really didn't by choice. I was going through chemo and radiation and I lost the majority of my hair so I chopped it all off. To have come so far and gotten it so long again was a big step for me and maybe that's why I put so my emphasis on my hair.

Before I could be dressed like crap but if my hair was awesome I felt awesome. I think that being taken to such a drastic extreme for me is hard to come to terms with so it's a big step for me.

However, I AM coming to terms with it and I plan on embracing it as another hurdle for me to overcome.

Like I said, there is probably a lot of paycology behind it

I plan on rockin the shorter look now. I am actually looking forward to it!

Well, I did it.... I like it but I can tell it'll be a long road. I went to pull my hair back this morning and it wasn't long enough! Yeesh!

BUT, I do like it, and I've gotten a lot of compliments already. I also had a friend who was driving down the street actually see me walking into work and he stopped his car and drove over to me. He said he had to stop to see if it was really me!

LOVE IT!!!

I chopped off my hair last year (preCG) and loved it for a few days, then cried a week later that it was so short. Then went back to loving it. Its so much easier to manage.

Thank you all! I really do like it! I know I much prefer long hair but it def has its perks this way! Getting ready for work this morning took half the time it normally does. That was amazing! My husband appreciated that I spent the morning with him when I normally am rushing around.

It looks great! And I'm not just saying that because it's the same length and similar cut to mine.

after a few days to get used to it, I'm having fun! It's def an adjustment, but The compliments I've gotten are good and encouraging.

It looks and feels a ton healthier too. My boss at work even said that, which makes me wonder how bad it had gotten in the back!

I'm still trying to figure out the best way to work with products. I think I mentally prepared to use less and now I don't use enough! Imagine that.

I'll have to post more pics again when I figure out the perfect way to get consistent hair.
