Question 2nd day hair? What next? Lots of questions...

As I posted in my other topic, my daughter & I are new to this & just started so we are still trying to figure things out.

What is 2nd day hair? How often do you wash your hair (or cowash, or low-poo, or whatever)? What do you do to your hair on the days you don't wash it? Do you still get it wet in the shower, or do you use a shower cap or something?

I am coming from a background of this - shower & wash hair every day (with sulfate shampoo), condition only if hair seems tangly. We always air-dry our hair, and have usually always brushed it every single day. I have noticed in the past my hair was wavier if I did not brush it after it dried. My daughter's hair is extremely thick & has always had a high tendency to get knotted up in terrible rats' nests. I did just buy her a silk pillowcase to hopefully help with that.

We have never really used much in the way of product (gel, mousse, etc.) only hairspray occasionally to help repel lice if we are going to be around a bunch of kids. Our hair is natural (no chemicals, never been dyed, etc.) My daughter has a flaky scalp. Since we both suffer from allergies, we also want to try to find products without fragrance, but it was hard enough at Walmart to find the products we did find, let alone products without fragrance, so the ones we bought do have fragrance. Any suggestions there? We do not have a Target locally, but we do have a Sally Beauty Supply. We could get to Target sometime if needed but it is about 40 minutes away. We also aren't opposed to ordering online if we have to, as long as it's not too expensive.

What would be the purpose of washing with baking soda? This has been suggested to me as well.

We don't want to spend a ton of time or effort on our hair, as we tend to be very natural here (wash & go).
Do we need the gel in our hair? I'm just not used to putting product on my hair, although I do like the way the gel makes the curls look, but I'm concerned about having it on my hair & not washing it out daily.

Any advice on any of the above would be appreciated.

ETA I normally shower in the morning, put my hair in a plastic clip & go to work that way. However, I am sure that's not the best for my curls that I am just finding out that I have, but it is easy. I tried showering at night & plopped for a few hours before bed & then did a pineapple for sleeping & my hair looked good the next day (with the gel too) but I am not used to that much effort on my hair, and also I am not used to showering at night, so I felt gross the next day at work. It is also very hot & humid here. We are in South Mississippi.

ETA Products we have:
Suave Tropical Coconut Conditioner (used a ton in my daughter's thick hair & it looked amazing the next day compared to the way it usually looks)
Loreal Evercreme Cleansing Conditioner (haven't used yet)
Loreal Eversleek Intense Smoothing Shampoo (haven't used yet)
Loreal Eversleek Humidity Defying Leave in Creme (used a tiny bit in my hair)
Loreal Everstyle Strong Hold Defining Gel (used once, in my hair only)
Suave Captivating Curls Spray Gel (used a tiny bit in my hair only)

I know that a lot of wavies really like the Shea moisture line. Have never tried it. But it's BOGO at CVS right now. There is also a free shipping code if you don't have one near by. I'm going to go today and pick me up some. I've been meaning too, but haven't used up my old shampoo yet. But BOGO is a deal I can't pass up.

Also, I have yet to have "second day hair." I can usually wash it the night before and spritz it with some water and add some product in the morning and go. However, I do wash almost every day. I shampoo probably 2-3 times a week. & I'm currently using suave naturals clarifying condition as my cowash. I really liked the VO5 kiwi for cowash but the smell was AWFUL!!! so i never got anymore. also suave naturals is supposed to be hypoallergenic. (i have very sensitive skin).

Oh boy that is a lot of questions! I'll try to answer as many as possible.

Second day hair-I don't do it, my waves are too weak. I think some people will rewet or maybe mist their hair with some water, add a little more gel and go. I am totally not the person to ask about this!

I alternate low pooing with just water washing (basically just massaging your scalp while standing under the shower) every other day. I was not a big fan of cowashing. For your daughter, you could work out the knots in the shower while her hair is saturated with conditioner. Use your fingers or a wide tooth comb.

I have a lot of allergies as well with a tendency for a itchy, flaky scalp. I do brown sugar scrubs weekly. Mix together about a tbsp of olive oil and a little more than a tbsp of brown sugar. I like to add about 5-6 drops of rosemary oil, others like tea tree oil. Massage it into your scalp, let it sit for about 10 mins and low poo or cowash it out in the shower.

I don't know much about natural, fragrance free drugstore products. I really like the Jessicurl Gentle Lather Shampoo (low poo) since I can get it unscented but it's online.

For 2nd day hair, I sometimes dampen my hair in the shower, sometimes I dampen my hair by misting with 1/2 water 1/2 conditioner in a spray bottle.

Using stylers is very much a personal preference thing. Many use multiple stylers, some use conditioner only styling, some don't really use stylers. I often don't use stylers or do use conditioner only styling. I also experiment with gels, mousses, and curl enhancers, but the results don't seem to be measurably better than with just conditioner, or even naked hair. You will eventually decide what is best for your own hair.

You mention that your daughter's hair tangles easily. I might try using a leave in conditioner and sealing with an oil to help with that problem. You might even try using these just on the under layer if that is where the problem is worst. Often rubbing on our clothes aggravates tangling in this area.

Okay, last night I co-washed & plopped for about an hour. I didn't do anything else last night (not even pineapple it). My hair was a big mess this morning. However, I was able to finger comb it, and then I sprayed it with plain water to get it pretty damp. After that, I scrunched with some leave-in conditioner & then some hair gel. I pulled it back with a headband, and I had the best hair ever so far today!
Thanks so much for all your help & advice so far!

ETA I always knew I had a bit of a wave & one place that always seemed to have one ringlet, but who knew I had this much curl in my hair???

I do 2nd day hair because it's always my best hair lol. The day I wash my hair is ok but takes foreverrrrrr to air dry and tends to frizz. By the time I wake up the next morning my hair is a slight mess but I just dampen it with either my hands or a spray bottle. I put some leave in conditioner in and mist some spray gel and that's it. 2nd day my hair is generally softer, shinier and my curls more defined. Not sure why, it just is. I wish I had 2nd day hair everyday lol.
