Do you use a leave-in conditioner?

Do you use a leave-in? I have been using Loreal (the one in my signature line, not sure what it's called) and I usually follow it immediately with gel. I like the way it looks, although it is pretty crunchy, which I attributed to the gel. However, today since I wasn't going anywhere this evening after my shower, I decided to hold off on the gel until tomorrow morning, but my hair was still crunchy. I co-washed as usually with Suave tropical coconut conditioner, and after washing, my DH trimmed a few inches off my hair, as it hadn't been trimmed in forever & desperately needed it. After this, I put the leave-in conditioner in my hair & scrunched it. An hour or so later, my hair was dry, but it still felt crunchy. When I went to scrunch out the crunch, my hands got pretty icky from the conditioner. What would make it do this? Do you think I should just skip the leave-in? After my hands were getting icky from scrunching out the crunch from the leave-in conditioner, I just decided to comb my hair with a fine tooth comb to try to remove it. (By the way, this is the first time I have combed my hair with anything other than my fingers since we started this a few weeks ago.) The combing made my hair feel so soft, but also it is more 2a/2b & less curly 2c as it has been lately. Help!
The first pic is my hair after the cut (and my daughter's) when I had the leave-in conditioner scrunched in, before I realized it was making my hair crunchy. (I cut her hair today too, as hers also desperately needed it.) The second pic is after I combed the crunchy out.
ETA We live in South MS where it is currently hot & almost always humid (outside anyway) if that matters for our hair.

I'm on my phone so I can't see signatures, but do you know your hair properties? It sounds like something in the products you're using doesn't agree with your hair.

Tricia, your curl pattern before and after combing reminds me a LOT of mine - and I can say that I had a similar experience after conditioning with Suave coconut for awhile. After examining a whole ton of products I'd been using, I decided this was likely due to the silk proteins and the glycerin in it.

I switched to the routine in my sig about a week ago and my hair is SIGNIFICANTLY softer and happier. Haven't checked to see what state my naked hair is in, but cutting out proteins, glycerin, and chemical-laden stuff in favor of more natural options has made a huge difference for the moisture level of my hair...
Mod CG since 5/10, 2b/3a, med width/density, low/med porosity, greying since 18, color over grey since 21

Hair hates: non-keratin protein, glycerin, sorbitol, agave, sulfates, polyquats, co-washing (flaky scalp), maybe aloe?
Hair loves: fewer/more natural ingredients, moisture

Scalp wash: Selsun Blue naturals or reg when desperate
Low poo: Giovanni TTTT
RO: SN - Strawberry, ES
LI: SNES
Style: HETT mousse, FSG if I make it, ??
DT: GVPCB

I do use a leave in, usually just a bit of my conditioner. I agree with the poster above and your hair also reminds me a lot like mine too with little differences. Do you know your hairs porosity level? Mine is low and I can't handle proteins, they make my hair sticky and stiff and take my curl away. I also live in a humid environment and have to avoid glycerin ...not altogether, but if it's near the top of the ingredient list I stay away, if it's in the middle or near the bottom i'm usually ok with it. I'm not sure if any of that info helps you at all but it sounds like you probably used something that your hair doesn't like. Comparing the ingredient list to an old leave in that you know works for you might help you decide what it is.
2(I have no idea what pattern), low porosity, mix of medium and coarse, dense

*Have just discovered the amazingness that is the "Spritz and Condish" routine*

Shampoo: SM Moisture Retention Shampoo
Co-wash: VO5 Vanilla Mint Tea Clarifying Conditioner
RO: GVP CB, Garnier Triple Nutrition
LI : Whatever conditioner I used + EVOO or Argon oil
Stylers: Organix Moroccan Curling Perfection Defining Creme, EcoStyler Gel (krystal)

I think the regular conditioner that I use in the shower for cowashing (Suave tropical coconut) is fine, because I went to work the other day with "naked" hair (no leave-in & no gel) and my hair was so soft, yet it was a bit frizzy & my curl pattern was not as defined (which I have gotten used to it being defined now, so I didn't like the look, even though I did like the softer hair).
I will attach a picture of my "naked" hair. It is uncombed/brushed so not as frizzy as the picture above.
Yesterday, I did use the gel, but no leave-in conditioner. I liked the way my curls looked, but I was unable to scrunch out all the crunch, so my hair feels stiff. (Not stiff as in dry, because my naked hair doesn't feel dry at all.)
I don't know if it is the product or the way I apply it. I have never used gel in my hair before this month.
This is the gel I have been using:
Loreal Everstyle Strong Hold Defining Gel
I am running low on it but have bought a couple of other gels to try.

I use that gel and I love it. If you have trouble with SOTC try rubbing a little conditioner on your hands first.
