THIS gave me definition!

OOK I got over my fear and bought a Denman D3 brush. I put conditioner in on the midlength down, and finger combed, and then directly under the water, I brushed in three sections, start from ends and working up, through. It was not hard at all, I felt no pulls, tangles, nada. When I got down, my hair was so much more defined, especially it did wonders on my shorter layer which is usually not wavy, not curvy, just poofy, even that layer is defined S! I was very impressed. My reflections are the following though:
1) I should probably not do it right under the water
2) I should probably run a wide tooth comb first
3) I wonder how to ensure I don't get knots on the upper half of my hair since I don't care put conditioner near my scalp, so how do I get tangled worked out of that part of my hair.
4) I want to try it AFTER using products, to distribute them and such, BUT I don't use a leave in, so I am wondering how it would work with something like SM curling souffle ONLY and no leave in, if it would do damage since there's no slippery stuff in it. Any thoughts or opinions or excitement to try, chime in!
That was amazing though!

Wow! How did you style your hair after rinsing? I would be so afraid to try this, thinking it would pull out my wimpy waves. But I am always looking for better definition and clumping. Thanks!

Sorry I can't help with your question, though.
remember, with all advice or suggestions for your hair, YMMV!!
My hair:
2b wavy, medium texture, low porosity, med-high density. Protein finicky.
My routine:
Cleansing: DCNP, every 4-5 days (occasionally use CJ cleansers).
RO: CJSC, occasionally use JCDC
LI: KCKT or CJSL
Gel: KCCC, CJCIAB for 2nd day hair (sometimes third)

Heat is my friend: warm water rinses, steam caps, and diffuse dry. I love CLU cloths and my Denman.
Alrighty, I found it very easy to run it through and since you're in teh shower, you can just wet it after and rescrunch. Everyone's different. but I find it gets more volume for me at the side, because my waves higher up on my head curl more and they're not just so so plastered down. But I tried it different yesterday and got different results a bit. The first day I did it towards the end, as I rinsed out my conditioner, I brushed under the water pressure. then while it was still wet I raked/smoothed my SM curling souffle over my hair. then scrunched that it and plopped for just a sec long enough to put my clothes on. That was really defined. yesterday I brushed and rinsed longer and scrunched under the water. Then I plopped. Then after plopping I raked in the same product. Still nice curls with volume, but less definition, I think maybe because I didn't put product in immediately to hold all that definition before plopping. The reason I did that is because I don't like product to get on my scalp which is why I put in product after plopping. ANd usually for me as a 2C I get more volume applying product to damp hair, not soaked, but not with the denman, it gave me more volume even though I applied product to soaked. so if you don't have scalp issues like me, try it with product going in immediately! Let me know.

I need to try a Denman one of these days. I do find that I NEED to brush my hair not only to distribute product evenly but also to kind of tame my hair a bit so that it sets right. Right now I use my daughters Knot Genie brush lol. It's kind of the same in that the bristles have a ton of give and don't pull the hair at all. It's been pretty successful with me I think. What I do is I finger or comb detangle in the shower but after I do a final rinse and rake and smooth all my products in and then I brush my hair in sections starting from the bottom with the Knot Genie. It distributes product evenly and also gets some of the water out without blotting. After that I get out, rake a little more gel in and then use a wide tooth comb to part and comb my hair through. I lightly give it a once over scrunch with a tshirt and I leave it alone. This always gives me great clumping. ^_^

I tried your idea of the comb first with product and then the denman through. I really feel no pain, so I assume I'm not pulling any hairs out. There were some hairs that were breakage in my big hair shed, but no guarantee it's from the brush or the comb. That I don't know. But yes I see some broken ends in my hair as well, so I don't know what to think now. You hear all those stylists that always say NEVER brush your hair wet, a comb is ok but not a brush. so again I get nervous, but I like teh clumping and how it sets the hair. My problem is that I don't know apply product farther up than the ears, so I have no SLIP on the top part to help with those knots/tangles. How do you help avoid broken pieces, or weakened hair from stretching them with the brush??

I had posted but I reread your comment and decided to change my answer lol. I grab my hair like a ponytail and starting with the very bottom and work my way up. I support my hair with one hand while brushing with the other. For me that's what keeps my hair from stretching and possibly breaking. Plus, doing small sections at a time is easier along with the fact that there should be little to no tangles if you've already combed through with conditioner. Since it's so wet it doesn't snag and goes through smoothly. I know what you mean about everyone saying not to brush your hair wet, but it's the only way i've found to tame my hair more, i'm just very very careful and so far have had no problems.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. So you grab it in a pony tail, and then section it out, or you grab each section like a ponytail? I hear ya, and it makes since about you saying to grab onto it with one hand to keep it from stretching. I did comb first yesterday so I felt confident. However, I did find one split end on accident yesterday (I NEVER SEE split ends) but doesn't mean that its from the brush and it doesn't mean I've never had a split end before, just sayin! ANd yes it's funny that straight haired gals always say to never brush on wet hair, because since their hair is straight, you'd think they would have no problems doing it if they wanted to. But yes it's the stretching issue, I guess. I just like the extra volume I get at the sides, like it doesn't weigh down so much and how it gets better clumping. I might keep trying. Thanks! And you do that daily, or how often do you wash?

I use the brush each time I wash or cowash my hair, which is every other day. If you get knots at the top of your scalp and don't like to use product there i'm wondering if a Knot Genie might work better for you? It's got tons of teeny tiny short nylon teeth that are super bendy. They are made for use on children so they don't cry when you brush their hair. My daughter, I couldn't brush her hair for months (had to finger comb) because she'd scream murder at a comb or brush, but with this one she doesn't even bat an eye and i've never noticed breakage. Because the teeth are so close together it's very gentle and doesn't pull at all. I decided to try it on myself because there was a time where I misplaced my comb and I was didn't notice till I was already about to get in the shower lol. I can't finger detangle because for some reason I just can't get the same results as a comb or brush so I used her brush and fell in love lol.

Maybe I have something like that, called the tangle teaser, but I have to push it in hard to get those short teeth down to my scalp. I assume you rinse out that conditioner, no? I actually like the brush more for styling, which makes it more dangerous because then of course, I only have a bit of leave in on the ends, so who knows. I might have to try it only with rinse out and just hope my nice clumpage lasts through that thorough rinse out. I know, my daughter has the fine hair, more than me, but fine. I've got the coarse, so it's all different.

Oh yes a Tangle Teaser is the same thing, the wide brush thing that you hold in your hand, it's got no handle. I only use the brush for the distribution of everything but my gel. So i'm distributing any leave in, curl creme, oil etc. in that go. Then when I get out i've brushed out most of the water so i'm usually not dripping anymore. I apply my gel by raking it through and then I part my hair and give it a comb with the wide tooth (I think this is what provides the clumping) and then I do a minimal scrunch with a tshirt and that's it. I have found that scrunching gives me fluff no matter what so I keep it minimal, but that's just me and so because of that i'm using brushes and combs to distribute product rather than the normal scrunching in that most people do.

Hey there! I'm assuming you're online, so I'm gonna take advantage to ask you one more question. So you're doing this ONLY to distribute product, right? You detangle with fingers, cuz you said your hair was totally wet with tons of conditioner, which made me think you had your rinse out, because I don't put loads of product, leave in or cremes, so I thought you were talking about your rinse out. So you do this AFTER you've rinsed out conditioner, with your leave in, then you rake in gel and comb through once more. Ok I"ll keep playing with this idea, thanks. And maybe I will try that tangle teaser for detangling, and not for massaging the scalp, although I find the teeth to be a bit rough, some have extra plastic around the teeth which I could see as causing tangles. Not uniformly made IMO! thanks

Yes, exactly. I do it only for product distribution after i've rinsed out the conditioner and then put in the leave in and curl creme. After that, at the sink, I smooth or rake the gel in and then comb with a wide tooth, yes. The reason I do it this way is because I have very thick hair and tons of it and scrunching only makes it frizz so this distributes product without my hands touching my hair so much. I also tend to smooth on products rather than rake in, sometimes I rake a little but the brushing takes care of that anyway. It'll probably still work for you even if you don't put in other products after you rinse because at that point your hair is full of water and newly conditioned so it should be fine i'd think. ^_^
