Unhappy Another cry for help (why does frizz have to exist?!)

Hello! I've been CG for several years now, although I only got back into the actual styling/trying different products thing about a month or so ago.

Currently, I'm trying to battle frizz and my straighter canopy. I have just past jawlength hair, and I will get lovely, corkscrew like curls underneath and at the nape of my neck and then weak S waves covering it all- and over that, frizz! Frizz everywhere! The ends of my curls and the hair at the back of my head tend to frizz and get all poofy, too.

I've tried cold water rinses, supersoaking, pixie defusing, both protein (Ion Reconstructor) and moisture (combining Shea Moisture's purification mask and restorative conditioner overnight) and nothing seemed to do anything at all vs the frizz. I'm completely baffled as to what my porosity is; my roots dry crazy quickly with an application of a microfiber towel, but the rest takes a little while. I tried the strand test, and there's maybe a little resistance when I run my fingers back along the strand, but only if I press down hard. I can't tell if my hair is dry or not, either; it feels soft when I dry it without product in it...?

My current stylers are KMF Upper Management Gel (works better on me than KCCC did, although to be fair my KCCC was old. Like, a few years old. Ew.) with Lush's Big Tease layered over every other day (I can't seem to use it more than a day in a row without it feeling like it's drying things out...). I have some pink Boots that I need to play with with a gel, too.

Can anybody help me decode what my hair is trying to tell me? I just want some clumpy, defined curls

Have you already tried flax seed gel?it does magical things to my hair ...seriously, since i started using FSG in my hair (right after applying tons of LI), frizz is no longer an issue for me

Frizz is! I think a good deal of frizz is from hair that just hasn't gotten long enough. I would rather have wavy hair with frizz than straight hair with no frizz!

I haven't tried flax seed gel, no-- I'm rather lazy and only in a DIY mood on occasion And I think you're right about at least some of the frizz just being short hair. Most of it's around my crown and very, very curly; which would make sense, seeing as my hair curls up more the shorter it gets. (Still dang annoying, though. Hurry up, little guys!)

I think I might be on to something, though! I remembered to do the stretch test on my hair when it was wet-- and despite my thoughts that my hair must be too dry, my hair stretched, and stretched, and did not go back to its old length. So I pulled out the packet of Ion Reconstructor I had gotten when I first started suspecting protein... and paid for it with ridiculously fuzzy, undefined hair the next day. Clearly my hair hates protein, so needing more of it wasn't the problem, right?

...except then I remembered Ion Reconstructor had Cocamidopropyl Betaine in it. Which I know my hair hates. Good job, me!

A trip to the grocery store to get some AO GPB, followed by leaving it in my hair overnight and the stretchy problem is fixed and my hair seems much, much better. (The bits of hair that frame my face are curling!) Hopefully it continues to behave itself even after it dries Maybe this is what I was missing!

I find pink boots creme makes my hair quite frizzy after continual use. At first it worked a treat so I bought a couple more tubs. Before the 1st tub ran out, I had to stop using it as it was making my hair really dry & hence frizzy.

How long has it been since you clarified? Maybe your hair is somewhat sufficated by all the treatments you gave it.
It might help to start over by clarifying, then you could take a nailtip of coconut oil (or another oil that you like) rub it between your hands and smooth over and scrunch in your soaking wet hair to seal moisture in. Then style as usual. That is something that works for me. Hopefully it works for you as well

I lowpoo every few days/every week, depending on how my hair feels; generally I don't actually clarify because my skin is ridiculously sensitive when it comes to most surfactants. (Going CG was how I found out I have an SLS allergy, though! I'd thought my lifelong flakes were just dandruff :P) edit to add I also live in a soft water area, so clarifying in general has never seemed like a huge deal to me.

I did wash with GTTTT shampoo for the first time in a while yesterday, but I also used the GBP again. Cowashed with some G 50/50 I'm trying to use up and used a combo of GBP on my crown (which still needs protein going by the strandtest) and AOHR on the underside today. I'm pretty sure just getting more everything in there is the solution; the frizz is still there, but slowly getting better, and my fuzzy ends are starting to behave Definitely having a better hair day today

re: oils, all of my attempts using them straight have left my hair either piecy and kind of gross looking or *more* frizzy, somehow! I also live in a pretty cold climate, so coconut oil would probably be not the greatest choice anyway-- that stuff sets up, haha. I am trying to use a leave in that has more of them, though, since I've seen that recommended for winter weather (and I think my hair needs it). Using SM Raw Shea conditioner for that; I forget the actual name.

I am glad your hair is getting better. It is always difficult to tell what could be the issue with somebody else's hair, since all hair is (re)acting differently and it also depends a lot on circumstances too.
It is definitely trial and error
