Wet roots, dry hair

CG Experiment Questions (see notes below)
1) Is my current method good for my hair type? Def. did not like the "wet" root line.
2) When (how often) to deep condition (have and will try biolage conditioning balm)
3) Since diffusing seemed to deplete the gel hold, can you suggest a stronger (non flake forming) curl enhancing gel?

Thanks in advance!

Day one of CG experiment (12/22/12)

Products:
Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo
TRESemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner With Aloe Vera & Avocado
Herbal Essence Totally Twisted gel

Method:
Massage scalp and run through rest with poo, rinse out
Flip head and apply condish, rinse out
While dripping wet, apply two palms of gel
Scrunch with microfiber towel
Plop into micro towel and leave 20 min {beautiful curls after release towel}
Diffuse to dry (short on time for in-laws Xmas) {may have caused clumps to release and frizz to start}

Results:
Flat and wet/greasy look at root line {either condish or gel was too much for roots}
Very ends look fried {def need hair cut}
Lots of clump curls - easy and pretty
When pinning front into bobby pins, canopy developed frizz
Hair is overall dry from years of round brush drying and flat ironing.
**Have looked at target, Walgreens and three dollar stores with no luck in finding small clips to lift root line while drying. Guess I will hit Sally's next week.

Hey, welcome to the forum! You're hair still looked really pretty, even if it wasn't exactly like you wanted it to be. Part of doing the CG method and avoiding heat damage is just developing healthy hair. It doesn't happen overnight, and some of the benefits of going CG might not show up until months after you've started.

Did you use a leave in conditioner? You can use your regular conditioner as a leave in conditioner. I like to think of it like leave in really forms the curls, then gel just holds them in place.

I can't know what your hair likes. Sometimes hair can be weighed down at the root because your scalp is producing too much oil from previous shampooing. That should go away. Also, a lot of people suggest not applying conditioner to the root. Like, shampoo at the scalp and scrub very well. Then only apply conditioner around where the ears are. I apply conditioner and leave in throughout my whole head of hair because it all tends to be very dry and frizzy. However, a lot of people can't apply that much. So, I would experiment with applying less conditioner and only applying it to the bottom of you hair. See what your frizz levels are like with that.

Deep conditioning really depends on your hair's moisture level. Like, if it feels dry try deep conditioning. If it seems ok, then deep condition it maybe weekly or biweekly. I usually don't deep condition unless my hair sees dry or hard to style.

I use LA Looks Sports Gel, and I really like it. I don't think diffusing reduces a gel's hold for me, but I usually air dry so maybe I don't notice it. I have noticed that diffusing can make my hair temporarily curlier than it really is, then it will fall out slightly through the day. I would recommend not diffusing all the way dry. Just get it most of the way, like to the point where it's only slightly damp. I feel like leaving a little moisture in the hair can help with the frizz.

Also, experiment with how long you keep your plop in. Some people do really well with plopping for a long time, but other people only benefit from a few minutes of plopping. If I plop to long it can make my hair flat and lifeless.
Fine Texture, Normal Porosity, Normal Elasticity. Dyed to brown a few months ago.
Lowpoo:
Trader Joe's TTT Shampoo
Rinse Out:
Yes to Carrots, AOHR, Aubrey Organics Rosemary Peppermint
LI: Yes to Carrots
Stylers: Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, LA Looks Sports, Suave Professionals Captivating Curls Whipped Mousse

Thank you so much Rainboe. This site is a bit overwhelming for newbies. I looked through some before/after pics and was blown away with the transformations. Patience is a challenge for me so I guess I wanted to see soft lucious curly hair right away... Ha ha ha

I don't have a leave in conditioner, but will try keeping TRESemme in bottom half of hair and leave root line clear. I've seen LA Looks sport gel mentioned frequently so I'll def. give it a whirl. As for diffusing, I just looked at the pixie method and it looks interesting. I don't mind leaving most wet to air dry, I just worry my roots will be flat stuck to head. I must find those alligator clips!

Thanks again for all the tips and advice :-)

You may have the greasy look for a bit while your scalp adjusts to the sulfate free shampoo. It's smart to put your hair halfway up though to help hide it!

You could probably deep condition 1-2x/wk since your hair looks a bit dry. Back off it starts to feel mushy and won't hold curl. Have you thought about using a more moisturizing conditioner? Lots of ladies use the GVP conditioning balm (Sally's version of biolage) as their regular rinse out.

Gels: Most gels aren't curl enhancing. Aussie Instant Freeze, Ecostyler Krystal (can make hair feel dry w/ the glycerin though), Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee (more expensive, use a small amount!).
Coarse texture, normal-high porosity, normal elasticity (Komaza Care), very weak waves
cleanser: Redken Fresh Curls Shampoo, CJ Daily Fix

rinse out: CJ Beauticurls, CJ A&OO, CJ Smoothing

jellies/creams: Mop C, KCCC, SCE FSG
gels: CJ CQ, BRHG

Should I add a curl enhancing cream (?) before the gel? Any recommendations for curl enhansers?

Thanks for the help :-)

+1 on the LA Looks Sports Gel.. It has protein though, if you're okay with that

The two drugstore curl enhancers that come to mind are KCCC (can find at Target) and AG re:coil (find at Ulta I think). I like ones that I find online since there's a much bigger variety!

You could also try mousse but I don't know anything about good ones.

I scrunch in my curl enhancer to wet hair right after the shower and then gel. You can also experiment with mixing your curl enhancer and gel together before applying it to your hair.

I apply gel in shower, plop, then diffuse a bit. I let the rest air-dry then scrunch the crunch. It's not as curly as it used to be when I wore it curly every day, but I know it takes time to retrain the hair to curl. Hope the Re:Coil speeds things along :-)

AG Re:Coil worked great!!! My avatar shows the results. I used it with la looks sport and was able to get second day hair- no frizz. I could have even worn third day hair, with all over light fuzz frizz but I wanted to wash and try Re:coil today by itself (no gel). I didn't scrunch the crunch since I stayed home all day so I'm curious to see what my hair looks like tomorrow. Thanks again for the GREAT recommendation!!

Woohoo, so glad it worked for you! One thing, some people can find it drying after awhile so if you feel your hair getting dry, take a day off or two. Others, it doesn't bother at all.
