Default HELP! with routine & products

Hello out there! My name is Jenna, and I am fairly new to the CG method. I have been playing around with sulfate and silicone free products for a few months, and have recently gone full CG. I am seeing some good results but still have some irritating issues.

First, my hair gets super oily at the roots by mid 2nd day but gets frizzy and limp at the ends. As of right now, my 2nd day hair routine is to mist with water, maybe add a bit of diluted gel and scrunch...then up into a ponytail halfway thru the day because I can't stand it. Don't even bother with 3rd day hair. I low-poo every other day, but I am confused if I should water wash or co-wash or something instead and try to stretch out my low-poos a few days.

Second, how do I determine which products I should try without spending a ton of money and ending up with a closet full of products I hate? I have low porosity, medium texture, and high density 2c hair (I think.) All the recommendations seem to conflict, leaving me aimless.

The products that I am currently using are listed in my sig, but they are all in trial mode and none of them have really wowed me.

I know this is going to be a long process of trial and error, and pretty much reprogramming myself to not treat curls like straight hair. I am just looking for a little direction and guidance to help the process along.

Thanks for listening and hopefully some of you have some suggestions to try!

I haven't used any of your products except for the smoothie and the smoothie was way too heavy for my hair. That could be part of your prob; Shea Moisture products could be too heavy.

Also, is the foam your gel? Maybe try using a true gel. And the low poo could still be too harsh and stripping your natural oils.

Thanks for the input! I really appreciate it! I was thinking those same things, actually. The recommendations for low porosity say to use lighter products, where for high density they say to use heavier products. I think I need to look for a lighter styling cream or leave-in and I wanted to try a gel too. I don't think the foam is giving me enough hold. Any suggestions on products?

I was also thinking of trialing co-washing between cleanses, and using the low poo once or twice a week. I have been avoiding co-washing because I tend to have a super oily scalp, but I have found that it is becoming less oily with this process. I'm thinking that I was stripping all the oil out of my hair and my scalp was going into overdrive. Now it is balancing out.

I am just getting frustrated with buying all these products that I end up not liking after a few uses. I don't know what to do with them, and its a waste of money (and already limited storage space!) Oh well, I will find someone to pawn them off on.

Thanks again! I really appreciate any suggestions anyone can give me!!

Honestly, I'm just as new as you at this but... I can feel your pain with having too many products. With the products are you unhappy with or are they giving you an adverse reaction? Are they not doing much for your hair?

I started just using up products unless they gave me a completely fried mess. When I first started modified CG I went through soo many products. Eventually I picked the Jessicurl line of low-poo and conditioners. At first I wasn't too impressed with the Jessicurl Aloeba Daily Condtioner (JC ADC). It didn't seem like it was doing much for my hair. Still I told myself I'm going to use it all up because it wasn't frying my hair like other products were... low and behold roughly about 20 days later it gave me curls and made my hair feel soft. My point is maybe just stick with something for awhile if only just to use up the product. I don't recommend doing this if it is frying your hair though. For me this cut down on the frustration of buying so many products.

Also, for me prior to CG I used a lot of products with glycerin in them.. and I live in a climate where this is bad. I've narrowed my frizzy problem down to be glycerin. So this is why I was drawn to the Jessicurl line. I also had a really oily/itchy scalp prior to CG method myself. After about 2 months it went away but I have to scrub my scalp really well or conditioners will build up and start itching.

It's hard to suggest products because I feel like everyone's hair is so different. My hair is a 2 truly wavy, it may be 2A, 2B or 2C depending on the day. I notice on really humid days its a 2C and less humid the curls will fall out giving me a 2A. I've stuck with the JC line and I've been happy with it. I use the JC Gentle Lather Shampoo twice a week for my scalp. Co-wash with a mix of Kinky-Curly Knot Today and JC ADC. Then I use those same products as my leave-in.. lol. Then I let my hair dry a bit and put Jane Carter Solution Nourish and Shine on damp hair. It has a wax like texture to it so it seals in the moisture some.

I've had decent results with this. My curls do fall out by day 2 but I'm ok with that because it is less frizzy. Not to mention it is waaay healthier looking and shiny and soft then before my modified CG method. I think the sulfates were just destroying my hair and drying it out. Then I had a bunch of glycerin to attract all the humidity in the air to my hair. I was left with a frizzy mess. Ugh.

tldr version; Try to stick with something for awhile to see the results.. like 3 weeks. Unless it is completely frying your hair, then don't do that.

edit: Forgot to put my hair type.. 2A/2B/2C, low porosity, medium texture, medium density.

I agree with the last post. I completely understand how overwhelming it can be, especially since I'm a total PJ. At one point I had over 110 different hair products crammed into my bathroom. It was so much that I couldn't really figure out what was working and what wasn't. I'm still recovering from my product binge and what I have now I'm using until it's gone. It gives me a chance to try it in multiple combinations with other products and I can try in a variety of few points. All of these things will affect how a product works for your hair, so it's worth taking the time to really try something for a while.

A great starting point is finding people with similar hair properties and seeing what they use. Remember that curl pattern has nothing to do with this. My hair twin has 2b waves and I have 3a curls but we get nearly identical results from products and end up loving a lot of the same stuff.

You might have to search back a few pages, but there's a thread in the 2s forum called "Share your hair biography" that has a ton of posts and would be a great place to start looking for a hair twin.

Those are some great suggestions. My hair isn't fried from products at all, and I'm not having any adverse reactions yet. I'm just not super pleased with the outcomes. So, I will probably use up what I have as long as I'm getting OK results, and play with the combos/techniques.

I will definitely check out the hair biography post and see what I can find. I am pretty sure I just need to give it all time (I can be a little impatient!)

I did start a kind of hair journal. Recording what I did that day with what products, how it turned out, things I liked/didn't like, and things to try next time. I think that might help keep me straight and narrow down a routine that will work for me. It is definitely overwhelming relearning how to take care of you hair, after treating it wrong for over 25 years.

When I first started mod-CG I started a "hair journal" with my mom via text/pic messages. It really helped in the long run. Looking back at my Day 1 of totally fried frizzy mess helps out when I have a day with too many fly-aways.

If you are getting OK results it should be okay to keep trucking along. Play with the products you have some. At first I was scared to mix them.. but now I mix all the time. It could also be that you need to repair your hair. I really feel that all the sulfates just destroyed my hair and its being "repaired." Even though I have never dyed the hair that's on my head currently.

Some of the older threads here are really amazing to. I liked reading the "Woes of a Wavie" one a few months back. I've been lurking for awhile.

Still experimenting.. but I like to use up my products.
Kinky-Curly Knot Today is my holy grail. My hair loves the stuff. <3
