2a/2b product suggestions

Hi, I'm new to the CG method. I already avoid sulfates but, until recently, I almost always straightened my hair daily. I am a 2a or 2b (unsure) with fine, high density hair and medium porosity. It frizzes but it also is easily weighed down and the curls can be difficult to coax out. I don't plan on going completely poo-free but will avoid harsher sulfates and limit poo-ing to about once a week (I'm prone to product build-up and weighed down hair otherwise). Does anyone have any suggestions for products (bonus points for drugstore/inexpensive products particularly as to the things I'll be using in larger quantities, e.g. daily conditioner)? I'm looking for a new shampoo, daily conditioner, deep conditioner, leave-in, and styling product. The daily conditioner, leave-in, and product are most important. My hair is color-treated (brunette, if it matters) so it must be color-safe. Also, if anyone has any suggestions for a sea spray that is color-safe and not super-drying, that'd be fantastic. Thanks!!

Your hair is so pretty! Well my hair is higher porosity so I'm not sure what I use would work plus I'm still trying to figure out what I like for my hair, lol. My hair does like a decent amount of protein tho, so I usually use a product every day with some protein. My mousse, sexy curly, has protein. Suave coconut condish, too.

My hair loves protein, plopping, and diffusing! Trying to find a way to style and air dry.
Thanks AKgirl. I'm going to try Suave for co-wash (right now I'm using l'oreal sulfate free shampoo and conditioner but I'm not sure how I feel about it). I also took some suggestions from your product list/reviews I saw on MakeupAlley and ordered Recoil, JCNS, and the Life Drops (I can justify spending a bit more on styling products, which I'll use sparingly, but for now I know I need to sitck to drugstore lowpoos/conditioners). If anyone, has any favorite drugstore lowpoos/cowashes/leave-ins/rinse-outs, I'd love to hear. And I'm also still on the hunt for a color-safe beach spray.
Your hair sounds and looks similar to mine! I'm very fine and dense, with different porosities throughout, and a mixture of 2b through 3a waves.

Another vote for Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut as a co-wash.

Lately I've been using Alba Botanica Coconut Milk conditioner as a daily conditioner, deep conditioner (left in under a plastic cap and towel for an hour) and occasional leave-in. It seems to work well for all of these purposes.

My hair also does well with a once-a-week sulfate wash (otherwise it starts to look very dull), and the one I'm using right now is Cynthia Sylvia Stout from Lush. For some reason this shampoo doesn't give me the "fuzzy" texture I get from most shampoos. I dilute about a capful in a 3 oz squeeze-bottle of water, then apply directly to my roots and massage in. Shampoo day is also PT/DT day for me.
Thanks Eliza! I'm sticking to my L'Oreal Everpure shampoo and conditioner at least until I finish the bottle and then I'll probably pick up the Suave and maybe try out a new lowpoo from there. I just got the Terax Life drops and the JCNS in the mail today (and the AG: Recoil should get here tomorrow) so we'll see how adding those works out. My hair has been extra shiny and soft lately - I'd say this is more due eliminating heat than any product I'm using - but a little lacking in spring/definition so hopefully these will do the trick.
Conditioners to check out: Yes to Cucumbers/Carrots, Giovanni 50:50, Tresemme Naturals

Leave-in: KCKT, Tresemme Naturals, or just use a little of your regular conditioner

Deep: Sally's GVP conditioning balm

Hard hold gels: LALSG, BRHG, Aussie Instant Freeze, Pantene medium to thick hair
Medium hold gels: Ecostyler Krystal, Garnier Fructis Pure Clean
Light hold gel: Kiss My Face Upper Management

Styling: KCCC
Coarse texture, normal-high porosity, normal elasticity (Komaza Care), very weak waves
cleanser: Redken Fresh Curls Shampoo, CJ Daily Fix

rinse out: GVP Conditioning Balm, CJ Repair Me, CJ Smoothing

jellies/creams: CR Curl Maker, KCCC, UFD Curly Magic
gels: CJ CQ, BRHG

I added the Terax lifedrops, the JCN&S, and the AG Recoil to my hair routine. While I have gotten the increased curl definition that I wanted, I am still lacking in volume and my frizz has gone way up (boo). I've attached pictures below.

I can't really tell if the lifedrops are making much of a difference in my hair comparing days I use it to those I don't but I'll wait it out a little while to see.

The JCN&S is a miracle product. I love it. I've used it both with my old Deva gel and the new AG Recoil and it makes my hair soooo soft (even with super-crunchy product). Also, while my hair has been falling pretty flat lately, it would be completely volume-less if not for the JCN&S which plumps it up significantly.

I don't think I'm in love with the AG Recoil yet. On my first attempt, I know I used way way way too much product. Learning curve. This time (in the pictures), I still may be using too much. I only used a quarter-size dollop but I may decrease even further as my hair got mega-crunchy/stringy/wet-looking. I'll see how it works with a dime-size or a little more but right now I'm not sure the increased curl definition is worth the fact that my hair looks significantly less shiny/kind of dirty and stringy. The search goes on. Also, I finally made an appointment for a Devacut next week so hopefully that will do something to bring life back to my waves.

I agree! I think I may have to ditch the recoil. Although I do get hit and miss with it. I think it's just too heavy for my waves. Today my hair looked too producty and I prefer a more natural look. I was thinking of trying AG beach bomb. Tho it does have a cone I lo poo so it should take it out?? I'm also looking for more volume. Our hair looks similar. Please share what works for you! One thing I consistently love is my curly sexy mousse!

What is JCN&S? My hair is similar so I am curious. I love jessicurl gelebration spray and the spiral solutions products. Also Ecostyler and flax seed gel and Aussie instant freeze.

Target has it, but it's rather pricey at $22 for 4 ounces. But it does get great reviews, so if there's a good promotion, I could be enticed to try it : )

The Jane Carter Nourish and Shine is a bit pricy but seriously worth it in my book. Plus, I've found a need to use about a pea-sized amount for noticeable results (its a pretty decent-size container so this should last a VERY long time).

Also thanks for the Curly Sexy rec, AKgirl. Do you find it drying at all or that it increases frizziness? I'm starting to think that my hair just doesn't like magnesium sulfate (one of the ingredients in AG Recoil/most sea salt sprays/curly sexy). I used to use sea salt sprays with great results years ago in early college but, since I got a couple brazilian blowout treatments last year and am waiting for them to grow out (because all of that stuff about it fading out naturally is total BS), my hair doesn't seem to like them anymore. I've heard that magnesium oil is gentler on hair. Has anyone tried it?
I agree with the JCNS. I've had mine for years! Lol! I don't need much at all, so it lasts a very long time.

The curly sexy doesn't make me frizzy at all, it actually keeps the frizz away and adds shine and volume. I have never been happier with a mousse! The key is to use enough moisture and not to over spray the mousse. I've been using a heavier condish since and shea moisture style and milk as leave in and that's helped with any dryness. It is expensive tho, so maybe try herbal essence totally twisted mousse first. I didn't have the best results with that one, but I haven't used it in years and my hair is much healthier now.

I think our hair is a little similar. I cowash with suave clarifying cond or suave aloe for rinse out i either use yes to carrots nourishing or avalon nourishing lavender, Giovanni direct leave in (i added a little bit of pure moroccan argan oil to the bottle) and la looks perfect polish. i cowash twice a week but sometimes i swap one co washing with clarifying with giovanni 50/50 clarifying shampoo. On clarifying days i do a pre poo of evco/evoo and i oil my scalp with my homemade hair growth oil. This past week i did 2 co washes but added lemon juice to my rinse out and my hair turned out beautifully shiny almost frizz free and looked very clean and bouncy. I try to stay on the cheap side when it comes to products. I already spent too much on conditioners but these two are the ones that i like for now. The yes to carrots smells kind of blah to me so i added a little bit of sandalwood essential oil. Yes I'm a fan of oils lol. Also with our type of hair we need to focus a lot on the roots. I just started clipping mine up for them to dry and make sure that you put some product on the roots so it doesnt looks like the rest of the hair. When i take the clips off it looks like i got a whole lot more hair. If you look like a wet puppy you probably put too much hairgel on the roots.

Having a really awesome hair day and, after switching between several product combinations for the last week or so, I hope this means I finally found one I like and that can be an everyday routine. Bonus points: the products that I use the most of (the conditioners) are both drugstore finds so yay for cheap!

The routine:
No low-poo today (although used L'Oreal Everpure Sulfate Free a few days ago...may do this once a week or try out the Shea Moisture brand low-poo)
Rinse out/light cowashing: Tresemme Naturals Moisture (rinsed out fully)
(Related: Does this count as a cowash if I did the scalp scrubbing or does it need to have some kind of mild surfactant to be considered a cowashing conditioner?)
Leave-in: About a teaspoon or perhaps slightly more (?) Shea Moisture Restorative Conditioner combined with two dime-sized drops of Terax Life drops (I think raking this in was really the key...the product was much better distributed on hair...especially since combining the two made the Terax able to cover more area)
Gel: Deva Arc Angel (quarter size dollop or slightly more) put in pre-plop and raked in (I've always scrunched before and theres a halo of frizz right at the top of my head...I thought that raking would straighten out and mess up my curl pattern and - in fact - it did look straighter pre-plop but it's way curlier than normal now)
Light scrunching pre-plop
12 minute plop using old tee-shirt

My hair isn't 100% dry now so I'm waiting to use my JCNS to SOTC (although it looks surprisingly uncrunchy) and build a bit more volume. Usually my hair looks pretty unkempt at this point but it's looking really good right now so I know it'll look even better with some JCNS.

Related question: Does anyone know if it's a bad idea to use a protein leave-in like Terax life drops on a daily basis? It worked really well today and (I think?) I have pretty fine hair that seemingly like protein but I don't want to dry it out.
Yes, that would be a co-wash.

So how did your hair turn out? Mine was fine with the protein so long as I used enough moisture.

Oh and I wanted to mention that I usually have good hair days with recoil when I only use a pea size amount for the front left, back, and front right. It really doesn't take much, so you very well could be over doing it.
