Default Ruined my hair

I went through a phase where I hated my natural hair & made the mistake of relaxing my hair. Now I miss my natural hair. My hair was pretty damaged from the chemicals, and was not curling at all (even after doing many treatments) so I chopped off my hair (at least 4 inches) My hair is now at my shoulders with no layers, and now its barely wavy and mostly straight/frizzy. It looks terrible! It seems like the top layer is the worst.
I need advice on how to get my hair back to a decent looking wave!

I attached a photo of how my hair was before I ruined it. (This is an average hair day, sometimes it was much more wavy&curly, sometimes it was slightly less wavy)

my curls were fried & lazy as a result of overconditioning & my love of coloring and heat styling. protein may be an answer to your hair prayers! i just switched up all my products, and the first step i took was to mix Giovanni Nutrafix (inexpensive PT) & Fairy Tales Energizing Leave-In, apply that mixture to wet hair, and leave it on overnight. my hair was soooooo springy when i rinsed it out in the morning. i'm liking Spiral Solutions Curl Enhancing Jelly too, but need to find a partner for it that helps with hold without making my hair feel gross & unnatural.

good luck!

Amanda

Thanks for the advice! I did an Aphogee Protein treatment today and styled with gel & mousse after using Aphogee leave in conditioner, I definitely have better wave now!
I am hoping to get a better haircut now that my hair is starting to wave/curl better! Any advice on what type of haircut to get that will improve my waves and not cause too much volume & poof? I've always had the hardest time getting a good haircut! My hair is shoulder length right now and here is a picture of how it looks now.

I feel your pain. Its not ruined, but it does need time to recover. My stylist talked me into a keratin treatment last March when I mentioned how tired I was of fighting frizz (I swear I had no idea I had wavy hair - I thought it was straight!). I hated it, and stopped trying to get it straight. I just sort of gradually fell into playing with my natural texture as the treatment wore off. By August I could scrunch it and get a sad little bendiness going. The wave is getting stronger over time. I have cut several inches off, had my hair shaped with a helix cut (not sure about that but it added layers so curl is stronger.). Messing around with product has become a hobby/obsession lately but it has made a big difference in getting some waves going.

Don't get discouraged. With time your hair will retrain its self and the waves will return. I use AG:recoil specifically to support the wave pattern in my hair for now. I hope I can stop using it once all the straightened hair is gone.

And just think, there are tons of women who would love to have your hair. I don't know how many times I've been a producty mess and someone said they liked my hair. I try to own it, limp waves, frizzy mess, and all.....

Ask for long layers, and absolutely no thinning or razoring! I am extremely prone to triangle head (aka big poofiness) if I get it cut too short. My hair is very thick and kinky and it needs some weight to keep it contained.

And make sure to balance out protein treatments w/ deep treatments. If you have a Sally's, maybe get the GVP conditioning balm for your DT.
