My wavy hair is very annoying. I don't use silicone or sulfate, and I use no heat on my hair. It is still kind of dry and the waves come out weird when dried cuz I sleep on my side so the right side is always barely wavy and the other side is really wavy. So I brush it to even it out and that makes my hair kind of frizzy and well not so good looking. I am about to buy some heat protectant and start straightening my hair. Anyone have any advice to try before I give up? I use shampoo once in a while, sulfate free, and moisturizing conditioner, silicone free. Anyone have advice?
Curl Pattern: 2A/B
Porosity: Low
Hair Density: Medium/High
Width: Fine
Length: Medium
I don't use silicones or sulfates!

Why not try diffusing? It could help you with wave formation on the sleep side, or you could wet it and scrunch it every morning with just a spray bottle and some product.

Dogs and nature abhor a vacuum.

You could also try pineapple-ing, or maybe prepare your hair at night with product then scrunch the crunch in the morning and aid a spirtz of refresher if needed? It depends on how you sleep really, is your hair loose?
Don't give up! I just saw your pic on the other thread and your hair is gorgeous. I prefer that look to straight. Also, if you do go down the straightening route you are stuck as no heat protector will save you from some inevitable damage and then your hair will be compromised no matter whether you're wearing it straight or wavy. Having said, of course you should do whatever makes you feel confident and good, and certainly products can mask heat damage for quite a while. But I just wanted to encourage you that your hair looks great as it is.

I am also struggling with my waves. The main tips I've seen are to trying to balance moisture/protein, not brushing or combing, plopping, scrunching, diffusing if wished...and lots more I can't remember right now. But really I love your hair in that pic!

Maybe if you post a bit more about your products/routine someone will chip in with some more advice. I agree with what the others say about managing your hair while asleep. Also you can braid in various ways (1 or 2, loose or tight) that will encourage a smooth and loose wave in the morning.

UK based wavy

Mostly waves, but curls and straight bits too!
Fine to medium, high porosity, medium density, very low elasticity
Highlights damage (growing it out), seems to like protein and need lots of moisture.

Cleanse - CJDF, trying out low poos ; Co wash- Uk chemist brands, Urtekram Rose or Aloe, Hairveda Amala Cream Rinse; RO - varies, Tigi Moisture Maniac, Desert Essence Coconut ; Leave in - Keracare natural textures; Sealant - argan oil
Trying out new things, still looking.
I'm in the same boat.

I've been CG for 5 months and my hair is not quite shoulder length and lot s of layers due to a DIY haircut. Big mistake.
I feel like it's not curly enough to look curly and it's not straight enough to look straight and I am frustrated.

As soon as I decided that, my hair gave me three good days in a row.
But today it looks homely.

Still, I think I am still going to charge ahead and stay on the CG and see if I can tough it out.
Sometimes I think it's tougher than I am!

I'll be glad to be a buddy as your hair is similar to mine.
You can PM me if you want to.
Giving up cg is one thing - you can use other products or techniques without having to undergo straightening and heat damage. I am not against people straightening if they want to, not at all - I just know that you can back yourself into a corner if you do it too often because of the damage, so it is something to think about. If you were going to stay wavy or curly but non CG that would be different, that works best for some people. I do think it can take a while to work out what products suit you on CG, because silicones are more predictable, they kind of mask some things that are going on with your hair? I don't know, still working it all out! Whatever way either of you go, I'm sure you'll look good - because despite damage issues wavy hair can look better than naturally straight hair when you straighten it because it has body.

It sucks but I don't know a lot of curly/wavy girls who could sleep on their hair and have it be just right the next day. It's a pretty common topic around here, and my real life curly friends often lament on second day/morning after hair. And most can't brush either. I can brush my waves when wet, but never dry.
Do you ever wet your hair in the morning and do you like that?
Curly work in progress
2C with some 3A if all the stars align
Low porosity, medium to low density and fine
No sulfates since 2009
CG since 2013

In my stash:
Shampoos and conditioners- Tresemme Naturals Low Poo, Tresemme Naturals Moisturizing Aloe, Suave Naturals Coconut
Leave Ins- Kinky Curly Knot Today
Stylers- KCCC, AG Recoil, KY Lubricant (yup), SM Curl Milk
Gels- Ecostyler, Biosilk RHG
Mousse- Devacurl Uplifting Foam, Suave Captivating Curls
I have such weak waves in my hair, I NEVER even knew my hair was "curly" til I REALLY damaged my hair by dying it and straightening it...so to give my hair a break I would wear it "wavy"...so now its been 8 months of CG and I could not be happier...But finding a routine is tuff...I'm a nurse and wake up at 5am already...so doing my hair at night is a MUST...like someone already mentioned. ..I do my hair at night...when I get out of shower...i scrunch scrunch in my hair product...then plop for 30-45mins...then I MUST pixie difuse on low heat...which really helps "lock" in my wave pattern..then with my hair all crunchy I pineapple over night (must use the cloth covered scrunchy). In am I lightly mist my hair with water... re scrunch the areas that dried in a werid patteren...and defuse for like 30secs to reset...then 10mins later sotc and fluff...I wash my hair every other night...and this is what works the best for me...
The first pic is pre CG...next is 1 month...then last is in February. ..HUGE difference! !!

looks great Shelly

that damage was like a blessing in disguise for you then, since you've discovered such great natural hair!

Am I really the only one who has better 2nd day hair than 1st day hair?
I can easily get 3rd day hair... I just wake up, free my hair from the pineapple, shake my head, leave home
My real problem is getting it good in the first place.... If my hair is good the 1st day, I know the next 2 days will be good as well (except if the weather decides otherwise, which seems to be a lot now since we have a lot of wind the last couple of weeks...)
Sleeping makes my hair behave better for some reason, and I loooove pineappling...
(I noticed as well that if I go out, and get back home and my hair isn't good anymore, that if I pineapple for like an hour, it gets better again... a bit... and my curls seem to be magic to me... since if they get disrupted, they can get back together sometimes... I don't know what's the secret yet... but I will find out...hopefully)

Anyway: pleaaase don't give up!
It's so nice to be part of a group of curly people!
Neleke that sounds great, my hair doesn't do that though, no! I wonder if it means you have good elasticity in your hair, or a stronger curl pattern. But I remember in the curly girl book Lorraine Massey saying her curls got better the further she was from washing day, although that was probably back when she used shampoo.

I have same dilemma. My hair is perhaps 2b. Recently got a new cut (layered (long layers) slightly inverted bob) and getting so many compliments when I blow it dry straight, someone even said the other day "wow your hair is looking great" I knew it was because I blow dried it straight but part of me wants to have it curly/wavy even if it doesn't look as good. When I diffuse and let the curls/waves show now my hair is shorter (chin length) am getting great curl on the sides. Just don't know why people like it straight other than I am mostly silver and perhaps straight shows it off more.

don't breed or buy while homeless animals die
@lucy: yes, I am lucky with 2nd day hair, but getting it good 1st day sucks big time...
I had to rewet it today... first time was no good, oooo no...
Hopefully it will be good now, because I want to go to bed... desperately... and I want to have nice hair since it's my birthday and I'm going to a restaurant and my friends will be singing happy birthday to me (I just know they will...) and then the whole restaurant is watching me... and I don't want to be sitting there like "stop watching me, I'm having a bad hair day"
Happy Birthday

Just remember as Shelly said we are our own harshest critics, everyone will probably be envying your hair and thinking how good you look, so enjoy your evening!

Neleke happy bday! !! ..just wear a confident attitude. ..most people envy us curlies...I did when I was blind to my hairs potential. ..now ill never go back to straight hair...at first everyone didn't like my hair curly...now everyone says they love it...but I think its because I became confident and comfortable with it...and that's what shows...so enjoy ur night...and rock that sexy curly hair!!!!!

Happy birthday Neleke!
I sort of blog
I'm mostly away doing field work through mid-May.

Hair: curlybob, fine, dense, low-po, big waves/ringlets (2C/3A)
Co-Wash: Nature's Gate Herbal Conditioner
RO: YTC Carrot, Aubrey Organics GPB
LI: BS Shea Soft Styling Cream (HG)
Styling: KCCC, Garnier P&C Gel
1xWeek: low-poo, gelatin PT or Joico K-Pak
Hair Likes: aloe, coconut oil, humidity, protein, long walks on the beach
had a nice birthday.
In the restaurant, my hair wasn't too bad but wasn't awesome either.
I came home, rewetted my hair (family was still going to visit me later in the evening), diffused and had a better hairday (probably also because I didn't go outside after the diffusing... the Belgian weather keeps on ruining my hair... I hope I will be so happy when summer arrives).
Off to bed now, I will continue my search for good 1st days later on...
(tomorrow I will be enjoying 2nd day hair, hopefully saturday 3rd day hair... but it all depends on the weather...)

Things for me to experiment with:
- getting good 1st day hair (my 2nd, 3rd and 4th days depend on the 1st day since basically I only do something with my hair on 1st day)
- making my curls weatherproof
