Hi ladies! I'm new here and trying Devacurl for the first time. My hair is Type 2B/C, thin, fine with medium porosity and shoulder length. I attempted the curly girl method before, but didn't give it a real shot. However, I have been using Loreal Sulfate Free Shampoo & Conditioners (Everstrong & Eversleek) for about a year now. Today I purchased the Devacurl trial pack and Devacurl B'leavein. Tomorrow will be my first time using the products. About how long do you ladies think it will be to adjust? Also, any style tips and routines for s'wavy hair ladies using this system? Thanks in advance!
If you've already been sulfate free for a year, the transition will be pretty easy. I was using Hair One (similar to WEN) for about 2 years when I went CG. I started off using DevaCare products because I knew they were CG, that "flavor" smelled better than DevaCurl and I wanted to keep it really simple while I learned about different products and what they were for. I had always worn my hair straight, so I had to learn some technique too. I was seeing decent 2a waves within the month, the occasional 2b at around 3-4 months, and at 6 months I was finally a consistent 2b and had the hang of the products and techniques.

If you haven't already, you may want to purchase The Curly Girl Handguide and/or watch the videos on Deva's website. Use the low poo (or no poo, I can't recall which is in the trial pack) on your scalp only. Just put a little on your fingertips and really massage and scrub your scalp to get all the grime loose, then rinse it out really well. When you apply the One Condition, rake it through your hair and finger comb to get all the knots out. I actually still use a wide tooth comb in the shower because I was having issues with my part. Once you've got the conditioner in, scrunch your hair so it makes a squishy noise. This helps really get that conditioner into your hair. When you rinse it out, make sure you rinse your roots well so they aren't weighed down. Hold the length of your hair in one hand while you rinse your roots (helps with wave formation), then lightly rinse the conditioner out of the length while still holding it. Squeeze excess water out of your hair. Do not dry hair with a towel (causes frizz). Instead, use a 100% cotton tshirt. rake in your products (when I started I was only using gel), scrunch a couple of times, clip your roots if necessary to produce more volume, then either air dry or diffuse. I prefer to diffuse my hair.

I still use the Devacare low poo and One Condition. I can't use a lot of the styling products because of the wheat in them (I have celiac disease and apparently it affects my scalp too). I "wash" my hair twice a week most weeks and the 12 oz bottle of low poo lasted me a good 15 months. I got through two one-liter bottles on the One Condition a year. I tend to really slather it on though.

Thank you so much! Our local library has the book, so I plan on checking it out today!
This morning, I followed your advice, I washed my scalp with the nopoo, then I raked in the one condion, and rinsed while holding my hair in one hand. I forgot to squeeze out moisture and put on a small amount of b'leave in followed by a small amount of the ANgel while sopping wet, with 4 sprays of Set it Free. I then sqeezed out excess water & plopped my hair in a microfiber towel and let it sit while I did my makeup (about 5-10 min.). Then I clipped my roots and diffused till about 60% dry, then let the rest air dry. When it dried, I scrunched out the cast, but a frizzy flyaway canopy developed at the top, while underneath the canopy, had beautiful soft curls.
I'm trying to figure out if the frizz is part of the adjustment phase, or if I should Have used more product, (I was very reserved because I hate the feel of product in my hair, or if it was plopping or diffusing. So many factors......either way may curls still looked better than normal...just not quit what I'm looking for yet.

I have found with the Deva ArcAngel, that I use a LOT more than with other gels, but it never feels producty. I love that stuff! I have a shoulder length bob, and I use about a quarter-sized squirt of the gel on each side, back, and another to scrunch into the length. Then I take about a dime sized blob and smooth the canopy and scrunch again. So, I guess I use 5 blobs in all. A lot of gel!!!!

Condish: JC Too Shea, CJ Curl Rehab (both as RO & LI)

I used to use quite a bit of arc angel too. Plopping sometimes causes my hair to frizz, so maybe try it without next time and see what happens.

hi Jakrussel3! This was a helpful post, thanks! I know I'm not the original poster in this thread, but I am learning a lot from what everyone has to say here!

By looking at your siggie, it looks like we may be close to hair twins. Can you tell me what the SS Protein Spray, AIA CJ, and AIF in your signature are?
Started embracing the 2b waves in March 2013. I can't believe how immediate the difference, when I stopped using sulfates! Now I need guidance on most everything else.
My best guess so far at my hair profile: 2b, medium porosity, fine and med width strands, low-to-med density, medium length.
So, today scrunched with a towel & then I used a lot more gel then yesterday. I then skipped the plopping and scrunched more with a towel. I started to diffuse, but then my baby started crying after a few minutes, so I mostly air dried. The halo frizz today was allmost nonexistent. (Thank you ladies!!!). There is something still "off" about my curls, but I can't put my finger on it. I think I just need to get my hair cut, so tomorrow I am attempting a Devacut. I'm kinda nervous because its just a local stylist that took the Devachon training.
My results began pretty early after going CG, but learning how to manage and enhance them is a longer process for me. (CG since May 2011)

I like Deva Curl AnGel, Mr. Right, B'Leave In, and Styling Cream. But I can use the B'Leave in and Styling Cream better in the autumn, I just started using the Mr Right and AnGel.

I use Hair Rules Cleansing Cream, Ultra condish, and either/and Curly Whip and Wavy Mousse as stylers. I find my 2b waves becoming more like 2c or 3a curls and spirals with the HR products. The wavy mousse actually gives me better spirals and curls than the curly whip bec the CW might be too heavy by itself for me, but whem emulsified (dime size) with 2 pumps WM per section (right, left, back), it is great for me! I follow with DC AnGel.

I get 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th day with Deva Curl Mr right.

A great way to try new products or pick up you favorite is to check out the swap forum. there are products for sale there too if you do not want to swap. A lot of us collect products in our search for our personal go to products (I even have some out there to sell/swap).

Sure wish I had found dc and HR products early in my CG transition.

Hi Gloria. Spiral Solutions Protein Spray (found on their website), As I Am Curling Jelly (found at Sally's), and Aussie Instant Freeze gel (found at drugstores). I use the AIF in the winter when I'm trying to use less glycerin because of the low dew points. Then once spring hits, I switch back to AIA CJ for my gel.

ok so I am giving my wavies/curls (2b) another chance and going to use the Deva stuff. I was wondering if I made a mistake, bought the Lo Poo instead of No Poo, should I go back and exchange it? I also bought a small One Conditioner and the gel (formerly Angel) which does not seem to do much (haven't used the shampoo/cond yet) but will use more next time. I get compliments when i blow my hair straight but none when I go wavy Nevertheless am going to give it a try and have made an appt for a Deva cut next month. With summer coming I know my silver hair is going to look frizzy if I blow it straight so might as well give Deva a good try anne

don't breed or buy while homeless animals die
If the Angel doesn't have enough hold, try the ArcAngel (harder hold) or the Ultra Defining Gel (really hard hold). I use the low poo and love it. I can't cowash or no poo all the time or my hair gets a bit limp.

Around here, Deva is a love/hate line. Many of us start out with it, think we like it and then move on to other things we like a lot better. I started using it when I was lurking on nc.com. I was a winter wavy/summer 3a. With the Deva product, my hair had a little more curl (first time I ever used products), but not much. It took a while to learn what products my hair liked and how to "handle" it. The DVD in the Curly Girl book really helps with that. Now my hair looks like my signature picture all of the time.
