My second attempt at Curly Girl!

Like Tree8Likes

I plan to use this thread as a place to collect my photos and toughts - I am optimistic about an amazing transformation over the next several months. I attempted curly girl method years ago I am back. The first time I used cheap products (nothing wrong with that if they work for you) but they didn't work for me. I was frustrated and I gave up. I still used sulfate and silicone free most of the time, but straightened, blow dried and fried my hair. Last spring I cut my hair fairly short and wore it straight. It was very cute at first - when the hair was stillvely healthy. I straightened nearly every other day for a year. Then it was obvious that my hair was completely fried so I decided to try to wear it curly from time to time. My routine for the last several months was to try to dry it and style it curly. If it looked bad I would straighten it. It got to where it wasnt very nice straight or curly. I decided enough was enough and I was going to give this another try - and not give up. I started by reading the book, then ordered a hair analysys.. Part of my frustration last time was not knowing my hair properties and making purchases based on a "good deal" versus good for my hair.

Here's a photo of my short hair a year ago - when it looked the best (you can see the split ends on the right side of the photo!) - but it slowly looked worse and worse over the course of a year. Second pic is May 22nd about 10 days after my last straightening and first day following the CG method.

I've been using cg friendly products for a few weeks now - waiting on the analysis and getting a cut tomorrow that will remove the worst damage. I'm excited! I'm also at the beginning of a weight loss journey. about 10 pounds down- 60 more to go. Hopefully next year at this time I'll be a completely new me!
These pics were taken 6/14 - after a trim that removed some of the worst damage and also gave me some much needed layers. I think I might need more layers, and my stylist let me know she'd fix it if I need more. We'll give it another few days... Anyway I did a coconut oil DT and added LA Looks gel to my routine and loved the result. My hair is softer and shinier and resisted humidity!

It looks great! I like the LA Looks gels- both the sport (which is very hard hold) and the Mega. I use them both. In my high humidity, a gel is an absolute must. I think maybe a few more layers in the back would look great. You have good root curl, and in the back they would just pop up a little more with a few more layers.

One month in - 6/27/13 I think this is the first day I tried okra gel. While it wasn't an amazing hair day, I can see huge improvements over day 1!

I am finding it easier to make defined curls and clumps but want to work on this some more. I have 3rd day scalp regularly - but my hair doesn't look so hot. Its too short to tie it back in a way that is cute, so I have only had decent day 3 hair once or twice. My scalp feels great and my hair feels healthier. While I don't see a lot of hair loss, it feels like I have lost some thickness. I know I can increase volume by diffusing, I just hope I am not losing hair!

Last time around I felt like I couldn't get anything right. This time maybe I was lucky, or my research paid off - I really did start with products that I liked and were helping my hair. I now am using them, but swapping out samples of new products one at a time to make sure I am not missing out on anything.

So far this summer, I have had very little frizz - part due to the weird weather we've been having, but also because I am taking care of business!

I want to work on increasing volume without adding the hair dryer back into the mix, and while still maintaining good curl patterns.

Hair is looking better and better. You should be pleased with your efforts! My only thought is to add more protein for volume. Also, 5 minutes with the diffuser really shouldn't hurt your hair. It may be just enough to set the curls and add volume.

Massive improvement! I would use more leave in conditioner, perhaps containing hydrolysed protein as KathyMack says so you don't lose volume. Your hair doesn't look too short for a half up with bobby pins.

Also agree with KM that a modest amount of diffusing should not be damaging, they key is to use ingredients that act as mild heat protectants - proteins, propylene glycol and glycerin all can - use only low temperatures and not diffuse to anything like fully dry. You can even aim to hit the healthy roots rather than the damaged lengths.

I'm going to go ahead and say 3a

Spring routine: Renpure luxurious argan oil shampoo/Loreal Advanced Care Color conditioner , HETT gel
Microfiber towel/diffuse
Trying KKCC
Wow! So nice.

I will get there. I will get there.

I think I'm going to send for a hair analysis. I was going to wait until my hair cut, but I don't know if the stylist does that.

I have used CJ Repair Me twice - Once as a DT overnight and my hair loved it. Second time I used it as my RO but left a little in instead of adding a leave in. I noticed glossy bouncy curls but not more volume. I diffused a bit yesterday and really enjoyed the volume! I cant seem to make the bobby pin thing look cute.. I'll need to keep trying.

I need to sort through my samples and look at ingredients.. I feel like I'm just randomly grabbing things.

kleinehexe - I am glad I got an analysis done!

I couldn't tell you who Marsha is...

DT is deep treatment, usually conditioning. PT is protein treatment.

Today I used all CJ - I was getting impatient using one product at a time.. lol. CJ daily fix cowash, Smoothing lotion - RO (left some in), and CIAB. I had way more curl definition than on previous days - nice hard hold but after I SOTC The pieces in front were very floppy and in my face. Bouncy, shiny, and floppy.. lol. Luckily I had a bobby pin in the bottom of my purseand was able to pin one back a bit. Maybe I SOTC too much - also still thinking about the way I part - if those top pieces curled away from my face, they wouldnt flop forward as much as they do now that they curl towards my face.

I'm not the most accomplished at clipping to say the least, but I either tip the top of my hair to one side and pin on the bend of a curl or lean my head back slightly and do the same. That way the curl is twisting naturally, it's only the root that is discouraged from flopping onto my face. Sometimes the grown out bangs look like a 'quiff'. If you try to get a curl to reverse direction you risk frizz.

Marsha=Marsha Colton of Curl Junkie You may want to visit her blog on the CJ website Curl Junkie - Natural Hair Care for all types of Curly Hair!

DT is to add moisture to your hair (or condition it), PT is to add protein, which for different properties does different things. (for porous hair, it can help fill in the "holes" in the cuticle.)

IMHO, the e-book on the livecurlylivefree website is a great investment. It has all of the information in one place. It's an easy read. If you have a question, it generally has the information to help you understand what everyone is discussing.
