I'm only about 2 weeks into CG so i'm still experimenting on products and techniques.

Lo-poo i'm using Shea Moisture Yucca Thickening Shampoo.

Deep Treatment i'm using Shea Moisture Yucca Masque.

Co-wash and rinse out conditioner I've used Suave Naturals Coconut conditioner and VO5 Shea Cashmere.

leave in i've used Suave Naturals Coconut and Shea Moisture Yucca Milk.

Gel I've used: LA Looks mega hold, Kinky curly Spiral Spritz and LA Looks Nutra Curl moisturizing.

I've plopped, clipped, and air dried.

I can't manage to get decent 2nd day hair, can't seem to stop the frizz by the end of the day.

I live in South FL and it's dewy and humid here almost 365 days a year.

I'm not sure about my properties yet. I would love to figure them out. I think I have thin fine low density high porosity but i'm not sure.

I'm not sure if my hair likes protein or not...I wish it would talk to me and tell me so this process would be easier!!!!

I'm on the hunt for a satin pillow case.

You can order a hair analysis from livecurlylivefree.com!

If you're having tons of frizz in low-dews it might be due to humectants. Is there any glycerin in your styling products? I have to avoid glycerin in very high dews.

Yesterday and today I used glycerin free products. Can't say I have TONS of frizz but there's definitely frizz there.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will look into getting a hair analysis.

I would say frizz is generally caused by:

1. improper moisture/protein balance
2. humectants (especially glycerin) in high dews
3. handling/touching hair while it's drying
4. rubbing hair w/ a terry towel after showering
5. product buildup
6. When you think your hair is straighter than it actually is, and you do things like brush it straight. You're literally brushing out the wave/curl, so instead of all those waves/curls hanging out together in clumps, the hairs themselves hang out in opposite directions and create that fluffy look.

You have to remember that in very high dews you may never be completely frizz free, but with proper care you should see a significant reduction in frizz.

Okay, so I went ahead and used the miss jessies pillow soft curls tonight. First I pre-pooed with some coconut oil for about 30 minutes. Then I washed with SM volumizing shampoo, conditioned with redken body full with some drops of NPF for protein boost, finger combed and let sit for a bit. Parted hair and cold rinsed upside down with cold water while scrunching hair. I then used ouidad botanical spray as leave in and redken body full spray, scrunched and sealed with a drop or two of grape seed oil. Scrunched out water added a little pillow soft curls and plopped for 5-10 minutes. Then I scrunched in more pillow soft curls, clipped and air dried. I had to scrunch out a tiny bit of crunch (not much at all, so little it would have UN crunched on its own), but I'm quite impressed with the volume I have from air drying. I do like a bit more definition, so next time I may top with my mousse or a gel. But this will be perfect for wash and go hair, because I will not leave the house with crunchy hair lol.

Forgive my lack of make up. I'm going to pineapple and head to bed.

Default Leaving Lurker-dom

Thanks to this thread, I'm officially posting for the first time! I've been doing a lot of reading/learning the last few months, but didn't really feel like I knew enough to weigh in. But a post for fine-haired 2's is just what I needed!

1. How do you cleanse?
This has changed, repeatedly. I found the Curly Girl book in November and started co-washing more. I had already been shampooing only once every few days. I switched to a sulfate free shampoo. But, my hair has thinned significantly in the last few years, and I stumbled across a shampoo/conditioner from Aveda that's supposed to help. So, I'm using that right now. It's not sulfate free, and I'm using it every other day with just a water rinse in between to reactivate my curls.

2. What products are you using that define, moisturize but don't weigh down?
I wish I knew! I've started keeping a journal of what I use daily and the results. I can probably tell you what I've had bad luck with more than what I've had good luck with.

3. What techniques do you use? (Plopping, scrunching, clipping etc.)
I recently tried pixie-diffusing thanks to this thread - it worked pretty well! I get some wonky flat spots on the top of my head though, no matter what I do. Plopping made them worse. Clipping can be good or bad, just depends on the day. The "Consistently Awesome" technique is my new go-to, everyday routine. It doesn't seem to matter what product I use, it always works! Consistently awesome hair technique...

4. Does clumping work for you or does it make your hair look even thinner?
My hair was looking pretty stringy til I found "Consistently Awesome" - I think it clumps enough, but not too much. I have to be really careful around my roots though - if they clump, I look bald!

5. Good second day hair - does it happen for you? Any tricks?
It has happened for me, once. Usually my hair looks better on days I don't shampoo, but I still have to water-rinse or wet my curls with sea salt spray (homemade) and restyle.

6. Techniques/products for volume?
Usually just diffusing upside down is my best bet. Products don't seem to matter unless they themselves are very heavy. I try to stick to mousse because it's lighter, but with the high dews right now, I have to use gel first.

7. Do you diffuse?
I have to. Air drying leaves everything poorly defined and stuck to my scalp.

8. If you have a lot of scalp showing through, is there anything you do to minimize it?
Ruffle the roots gently with my fingertips. Or try to arrange the hair and use hairspray to make it stay put (I try to avoid doing this regularly, just special occasions). Also, pulling my "bangs" back hides it pretty well.

9. Anything that has thickened your hair?
Not yet. I'm hoping the Invati system does.

10. What haircut would you recommend?
I think my hair actually looked thicker when it was BSL and not layered at all. I did a big chop in February for donation, and it's looked a little sparse since then.

11. Share tips on cute updos, accessories, anything that spruces up your hair or is a go-to.
I pull my hair up with bobby pins A LOT. It's a little too short right now to make it all stay, so I'm looking forward to growing it out a bit more. Headbands are key when the roots are being flat or clumping too much.

Thanks so much for bringing all this together in one place! My hair can use any advice you ladies have!

I think this is where I fit in. I have fine and thin hair for my top layer especially my crown.

I'm still trying to figure out the washing hair thing. I co-washed once and it was awful. I don't know if it's normal transition or if my hair really doesn't do well with co-washing. It was pretty horrid though. My hair was flat, heavy, greasy feeling, dark, and wet looking.

I washed a couple days later with low-poo and it looked better. Not as fluffy as when I used sulfate poo though. I'll have to try some of the low-poo suggested here. I bought Everyday Shea Moisture Shampoo, but after I bought it I learned it has soap in it so it may be drying to my scalp. I think I may try my kids' NG Baby Shampoo.

I'm not a fan of clumping. When my hair clumps I have some impressive (not in a good way) bald spots. Not a fan of that at all. So what does one do to prevent clumping close to the root so that one does not have bald spots?

I've always air dryed. I'm coveting the Deva fuser dryer though. Oh, the soft cover diffuser thingie that sits on your head that is being discussed right now looks intriguing.

I bought DermOrganic Volumizing Foam the other day. I've tried it once so far. It was on second day hair though, and I had a ton of frizz. My waves are pretty intact 2nd days but the frizz is crazy. I already have a satin pillow case. Maybe I should try silk?

Most of the CG techniques are about forming clumps. For me I get most clumpy when I scrunch product into soaking wet hair, and then go straight into a plop. I get big clumps that take forever to dry. I agree that clumps near the scalp aren't great for those with thin hair... it tends to make the hair look thinner than it actually is.

If you rake in product, especially on damp hair as opposed to soaking wet that should break up the clumps. Diffusing definitely helps. I think you'd be giving up some definition here, but for thin hair I think it's a good tradeoff.

Kleinehexe I can also see my scalp a lot when my hair is air drying. But once i sotc it's so much better. Is the case the same for you? I love posting pictures as well as seeing pictures, it's much easier to show than to explain...
