I don't know what my hair is supposed to feel like

I just realized that I don't know what my hair is supposed to feel like! When I wash it with harsh shampoos it does get very rough and dry feeling. I've been mostly cowashing (with only a couple of no-poos) the last few weeks and my waves/curls don't feel as strong and bouncy as pre-CG, but maybe hair coated in silicone just feels different and this is my "normal" hair. Or maybe I need protein. Or maybe I have some build up and I should clarify, although I don't know with what.

I'm going to try no-pooing once a week for now until I can get a hair analysis done. I'm scared to do a PT until I get some info because I always thought my hair was coarse. Except that it doesn't all feel as coarse to me as it used to, but maybe it feels different because it isn't dried out and then coated in silicone anymore.

When I manage to control my frizz it feels lovely against my head and neck, much better than it EVER did before. I'm just going to have to be patient and get a hair analysis so I can take it from there.

I found the same thing. I freaked out one night because suddenly my wet hair felt like CLOTH! I'm like "is that RIGHT??! Did I ruin it?!" Then I figured cloth is strong. That's probably a GOOD thing. Lol!

LOL! I felt the same way around 5 or 6 months ago when I committed to all this stuff!

Okay, if your hair doesn't feel as "strong" it's very likely that it is overconditioned. You can clarify with a low-poo with coco-betaine, unless you think something else has really built up. I would recommend trying a PT! If you're scared, you can also try using a leave-in w/ protein. I just bought the SheaMoisture Coconut/Hibiscus curl & style milk, which has a bit of protein and my waves really sprung up! I love it! Do you use any protein at all? Gray hairs are supposed to be more porous, so you could probably benefit from regular intake of proteins, it's just a matter of how much.

After a few times of being on the overconditioned side and on the over-proteined side, I learned how my hair is supposed to feel, and I'm sure you will too!

It's also common for curlies to feel like they used to be more coarse, and their hair feels finer once going CG. It's just because of the moisture. But you'll figure out your own moisture-protein balance!

Thanks, yeah I have to figure out my protein moisture balance. My products aren't protein free. I haven't been avoiding it or seeking it out. I'm tempted to try the protein filler since I can experiment with adding a little at a time to one of my products (rinse out, I guess). I've read that even coarse curlies can handle more protein this time of year so it's a good time to experiment. I'm just scared of winding up with straw! I had straw in some sections when I was doing my own box dye (poorly). I don't want to go back there.

I think it all just feels different now and I'm not sure how to interpret it.

A really good way to judge protein-moisture balance is to scrunch the length when its wet. I do it nearly every shower after I wash it (co or lowpoo), I gather it all together and scrunch the length all the way to my scalp and give it a good squeeze. If it feels mushy and pliable and doesn't hold a good wave its overconditioned. If it feels hard and resists scrunching its overproteined (I've never had this so I'm speculating a bit). If it feels like it has some structure and solidity to it and holds a fairly tight wave when released it is just right.

I suggest you do a PT with a protein heavy regular conditioner like Cure Care or the Ion protein one or use a real PT but for half the time suggested to start. After you rinse it out do the wet-scrunch test, if your hair feels hard/over-proteined follow up with a moisturizing conditioner to balance it out. If it feels good and holds a decent wave then style and dry and see how it goes. If it still feels mushy/pliable then add more protein in regular products and / or PT's until you hit its happy place.

I think a lot of curlies when they find this site *think* their hair is coarse. I did too. But it was just dry. As it got healthier and I did the big chop, I realized it's not coarse at all- it's even on the fine side! I never in a million years thought my hair would feel soft. I was used to it feeling itchy and coarse- but that's just how it feels when it's dry.

I was scared to try protein at first too, because again, I thought my hair was coarse. So I slowly incorporated more products into my routine with protein, and my hair got better and better. Some of the products you're already using have protein, so I highly doubt you're "protein sensitive". I think your idea of getting the filler is a great idea.

Thanks, ladies. It's weird, isn't it, how we can have this idea of our hair and it can be completely wrong?

Chloe - I know what you feel about feeling itchy. Some nights I had to move it away from my face and neck because it felt so irritating. It's definitely not like that anymore.

Since going CG in January, it's been mostly trial and error for me in trying to get the right protein/moisture balance. Pre-CG, I didn't straighten my hair, but used harsh shampoos & silicone products; my hair always felt rough and coarse. Now, my hair feels so SOFT, that I an constantly touching it because I just love the way it feels. Also, when I touch my hair, it doesn't frizz up like it did when I touched it pre-CG

At some point, I will get a hair analysis to find out for sure, but until then, it's always an adventure!
I've only been doing it a month, but it's definitely trial and error!
