My hair loves sulfates and silicones and I have had no problem with build-up or dryness. I use Fruitamins shampoo (from Dollar Tree, kind of smells like a baby shampoo, very low lather) and Pantene Curl Conditioner as RO, Garnier Fructis S &S Leave in. Almost always air dry after thoroughly combing LI through. This is 2nd day hair down before put in ponytail. It's too hot here!

I'm in the same boat I use sulphates once a week and I use silicones in my leave ins. It's working great for me! I just took CG ideas and applied some of them to my routine. ImageUploadedByCurlTalk1371628316.956389.jpg
I think it looks okay! It looked like a train wreck during the winter when I was CG.
Your hair looks awesome!
Definitely some people do better with sulfates and silicones. I think very hot appliances really hurt your hair's health if they are overused but gazillions of people use sulfates and cones without a problem.

I just washed with a sulfate poo and am going to try a cone spray (Tresemme) today because I have been unhappy with how my hair has been looking and I need it to look really good this afternoon.

The only way to know what works best for you is to experiment. Cheers!
2/c and some 3A. Modified CG.
Protein sensitive
Highly porous. Color over grey.
Best 1st day method: Super Soaker
Conditioners: Curl Junkie Beauticurls Strengthening Conditioner,
Deep condish: Curl Junkie Curl Rehab
Stylers: Mix Curls in a Bottle into everything for shine. Terrible pj
Sometimes try roller sets - classic glamor but I prefer my curls.
Every day is a gift
Yes I have been rebelling a bit too, using silicones {Kendi oil} and then washing with Tresemme something or other that has sulfates. The good news is that I have cut way down on heat appliances so I view it as a good change overall, from where I have come from.
I have absolutely no problem with most sulfates, and have yet to find a silicone that disagrees with me! To keep my hair healthy, I've given up heat styling and dye. It's growing like crazy, and is healthier than ever. I'm happy to know I'm not the only one here who isn't totally cg!
Count me in with the rebellion
I do primarily use CG products, but I have a sulfate shampoo that will have to be pried out of my cold dead hands. I also have a handful of silicone products that I absolutely love.
I believe the key is to understand how these products work and make sure that we take steps to keep our hair moisturized. Even Lorraine Massey was okay with certain cones at one point-- One C used to contain amodimethicone.

Corrina, what are your non-CG faves?
fine - low/normal porosity - medium density - normal elasticity.

Currently using:
Cowash: Cure Care diluted with water 1:1
RO: Cure Care, V05 Kiwi Lime
Styler: UFD CM (old formula), FSG + CNPF
PT: IAgirl's gelatine

Experimenting with: no guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, gelatin gel

Recent findings: my hair likes Cure Care diluted with water as a cowash; does NOT like guar h.c.!

Ouidad Climate Control Gel- this stuff kept my hair frizz-free on a week-long cruise to the Bahamas. Enough said
MoroccanOil Curl Defining Cream- this is more of a low dew point product for me, layered under a hard hold gel.
TIGI Curls Rock Amplifier- this product does technically contain silicones, but only cyclo-cones, which evaporate off of the hair during the drying process, so it can be used with co-washing regimen. But CG purists do consider non-CG. I layer this under TIGI Curlesque Strong Mousse (water-soluble cones only), and get amazing results. My best hair day ever was using these two products.
I've also been getting good results with MoroccanOil Light formula oil. Haven't played with it enough to call it HG, but so far, so good. And I'm still debating AG Fast Food LI- I really like it, but not sure I would use it enough to re-purchase because I normally just leave in some of my RO.
I have to also note that I have higher standards for non-CG products in terms of whether or not it's worth re-purchasing. I will re-purchase CG-friendly products that give me at least 6 out of 10 level results. Non-CG products need to be at least 8 out of 10 for re-purchase because of the extra thought I have to put in to make sure I avoid buildup and maintain moisture. In general, I find that I do well with cones in styling products (including LI), but my hair generally doesn't like cones in cleansers or RO conditioners, even the more widely tolerated amodimethicone (trying one more conditioner because I'm a horrible PJ).

hey thanks for posting this, I can't see wear cg has helped my hair, however I am currently using the garnier fructis pure and clean line and love it but, this post makes me want to try the sleek and shine, I"ve read some good reviews, but was afraid, I want what works!!!

After "discovering" my hair has curl (much like my mom's did around my age), I learned the CG "no poo" method at the same time. I'm only about a month in, and I haven't been able to find the perfect "cone-free" gels to help my hair remain un-frizzy; so, my hair's been feeling kind of heavy lately without using any shampoo. To see that you can have gorgeous curls like you ladies do in the pics you've shared makes me feel so relieved! I'm going to try it tonight and hope I'm blessed enough to rock my locks the way you have! Thanks for the thread!

Good luck!
My hair feels and looks a thousand times better with sulfates and cones. I went a week with out either and my hair looked dirty and stringy everyday...
