Noob questions :) :) :)

Hi All

I came over here from reddits /r/curlyhair!

I have been growing out my hair for months, in the last three months I haven't been able to afford a haircut so it was behind a headband all the time or when I went out I blow dried it.

THEN I GOT A HAIRCUT, washed my hair, let it air dry naturally and I had WAVY hair. Like 2a wavy. My SO said it looked good so I left it be instead of attacking it with straighteners :P

I then read the curly girl online, went to aveda to get a hair analysis and bought some pretty expensive shampoo and conditioner to sort out my scalp. They are sulphate and formaldehyde and paraben free

I washed my hair, dried it with a tshirt and suddenly I have almost 2b hair!!!!!

My question is this, should I lose the shampoo and go full curly girl? It was expensive and I love how it is really soothing my scalp.

Or will I alternate and use the shampoo once a week and try washing with a conditioner every second day?

A lot of it comes down to personal preference. My philosophy is do what works for you. Many people come here because they hate how their hair looks and they spend months or even years looking for products that make their hair look and feel good. If you already have that, then you're a step ahead if many others, and there's no need to mess with it unless you want to.

Welcome! What is the scalp issue, which shampoo and conditioner, what did the hair analysis come up with?

Sulphate free shampooing is part of the Curly Girl method, it is in the book and many wavies choose that option for volume.
2a-2c, medium texture, porous/ colour treated. Three years CG. Past bra strap length heading for waist.

CO-wash: Inecto coconut/ Elvive Volume Collagen
Treatments: Komaza Care Matani, coconut/ sweet almond/ fractionated coconut oils, Hairveda Sitrinillah
Leave in: Fructis Sleek & Shine (old), Gliss Ultimate Volume, various Elvive
Styler: Umberto Giannini jelly, Au Naturale styling gelee
Flour sack towel, pixie diffuse or air dry.
Experimenting with: benign neglect

It's possible your own sebum is part of the problem, that occurs in one common scalp complaint. Irritation and pruritis (itching) likely denotes an inflammatory condition, flakes do not necessarily mean the skin is simply dry. Other than that it's difficult to treat without a diagnosis, ingredients that are beneficial in one skin disorder can actually worsen another.

Whilst you are awaiting an appointment you can review your diet making it as nutrient dense and anti inflammatory as possible, especially consider your intake of oily fish (more), sugar and white/ refined carbs (ideally none). Diet modification can moderate the amount and composition of your sebum making it less irritant, strengthen the skin barrier making it less able to be irritated, reduce systemic inflammation and calm the immune system so is potentially beneficial whatever dermatological complaint you are diagnosed with.

thanks for the advice, I never thought of talking to a doctor about it as it's not crazy bad

I don't eat any refined carbs or processed stuff or any sugar for about 5 years now I also eat oily fish at least once a day and sometimes more
Hi there! I came from the same subreddit!

Oddly enough, I've found that my flakiness went down a LOT since I started exclusively cowashing with Suave Naturals Coconut. I don't think there's anything wrong with using a sulfate free shampoo, but I think the trick is to see how long you can get away with just cowashing before you use it. I thought that my scalp got greasy after two days without shampooing, but that was before I learned to rinse after co washing and then using a different conditioner. Just push your boundaries and see what you can get away with! And don't ever be afraid of "too much conditioner!" It took me a LONG time before I learned what over-conditioned hair looked like, and I haven' had over-conditioned hair since I started using conditioners with proteins in them.
