Protein/Moisture Conundrum

Okay, so, I really have no idea what to do at this point because everything I've researched seems contradictory to what's actually happening. Hopefully someone can answer this because I'm at a complete loss at this point. Here's the scoop:

My hair is soft. Like, soft-soft. Like, puts Angel Soft to shame soft. And it's a big frizzy mess; not at the roots, but I'm growing out some unfortunate layers and it's like the ends of the hairs all curl outward. When I first started CG, I was strictly cowashing and using a heavier R/O and my hair definitely improved. But after a bit it started to get super soft and dull and frizzy. Because of this, I figured my hair was over-conditioned, so I switched from full-CG to mod-CG, and went from strictly cowashing about 3x week to low-pooing 3x a week. I switched to a lighter R/O with more protein, and started doing regular PT's. My hair seemed to like it, so I kept adding more protein. It did okay at first and then just got dull and lifeless and frizzy all over again and never wanted to hold a wave. I never got to the crispy, over-proteined frizzy hair. I've done 3 CNPF-spiked PT's in the past 1.5 weeks and my hair has just soaked it up but it never seemed to stop being soft and dull. Here's where it gets weird: on a hunch I did a sulfate wash to clarify the other day and followed with a DT. My hair still felt almost too soft, it stayed dull, lifeless, and frizzy, but (!) my waves started to come back and were consistent and prominent even though they were frizzy. This time, though, my hair started to have that mushy over-conditioned feeling.

So what gives? My hair keeps giving me all the signs that it wants more protein, acts like it's over-conditioned, but responds somewhat positively only to moisture, not protein. Is it possible that my hair only *feels* overconditioned, and it's in fact dehydrated and/or over-proteined? Will more moisture bring some shine and life and smoothness to my hair? Am I using the wrong products? Could I need more moisture AND more protein? Or am I just over thinking this and I should start dumping moisture into my hair?

There are some people who do not get crispy hair with too much protein. They get soft hair that won't hold a wave/curl. It's a less common response.
So it sounds like you might want to try backing off from the protein a bit and increasing the moisture and see if that helps. The balance thing is probably the most challenging part of CG and it can definitely take some time to get it right.

So I showered again today and started fresh. Cowashed with SN Coco, DT'ed with GVPCB and JM for 30min in the shower with a shower cap. I used GVPCB and SN as a L/I. Applied a light gel while soaking wet, plopped 30min, took down the plop, scrunched a hard-hold gel into damp hair with a t-shirt and air-dried. I still need to SOtC but so far my hair is shinier, less frizzy, and actually holding waves (I even have a couple little spirals!). More moisture it is! For now at least.

Do remember that hydrolysed protein can both patch repair the surface and penetrate - more so on chemical treated hair - I suspect some heads prefer one, some the other and some both. My hair is colour treated but wouldn't be able to take protein in a rinse out, leave in AND three treatments in a short space of time.
