I need to rant, I'm really at a loss

I need to rant, I am getting sick of my hair. I used to wash it everyday, and now I can wash it every 3rd day, I'm aiming for every 4th day atm and I should achieve this in a month or so. This is a big deal to me as I have been a daily hair washer since high school (I'm 23 now) I feel like I have come so far in that respect but I'm still at a loss, even though my scalp looks nice, the rest of my hair looks awful on day 2 and 3. It just seems like I've wasted my time trying to stretch my washes as my hair will look rubbish anyway. Regardless of how I wear my hair overnight, in the morning my hair is virtually straight, and has lost all of its shine and glossyness. I've tried bunning overnight, pineapple-ing, wearing it loose (always with a sleep cap over the top) It's just a mess. So I have to wear it up anyway.

Part of me thinks when I was wearing my hair straight(er) by combing it copiously after drying, I never had these problems, but then I was washing my hair daily then anyway. I do not want to saturate my hair with water everyday, the whole point of stretching my washes was to avoid water damage. So I'm completely lost! I need to experiment with reviving my waves by only dampening my hair and either using conditioner or more styling product. I just feel like there's no way I can achieve nice hair. I'm annoyed with having to have crap hair every morning. I'm struggling to see how this hair journey will end up!

Plenty of people on the board wet and restyle daily; you're definitely not alone.

I don't because I'm lazy/hate having wet hair and don't have time to diffuse every morning. It doesn't look as good day 2 & 3 but whatever. I often only use leave-in conditioner (no gel) because it tends to look better on day 2 & 3 than gel (even though gel makes day 1 look the best).
fine - normal porosity*?- medium density - normal elasticity. Hard water. SoCal.
*Used to be low-porosity, but I lightened my hair 1-2 shades, so I may be normal-porosity now.

Have you tried pineappling with a sleeping cap?

It also might be that you need a gel with a stronger hold. What one are you currently using?

I've definitely had this problem. I don't know how your hair feels about protein, but this helps my hair immensely in keeping the curls and waves overnight. Lately I've been able to turn my head upside down, fluff and scrunch, then spray a little bit of water to the straighter parts (not saturating it), put a tiny bit of product to tame frizzies and scrunch it in. Works pretty well! Not as good as first day hair, but it still looks good. I have a pretty darn straight underlayer in the morning and this perks it up nicely. Takes a couple hours for the hair to dry, but it's much better than going to work with a saturated head of hair for 6 hours.

Don't give up! I almost did a few weeks in too, and while I still haven't figured out how to have that "shine", I did finally just last night stumble on a thread that gave me my own personal answer for second (and third) day curls instead of the gunky mop I was getting with misting. Maybe it will work for you? The gal's thread was called "2nd day curls my washcloth method" and in short, all I did when I took down my pineapple this morning was wet a washcloth and use it to scrunch my hair instead of bare hands and soaked hair. It came out much less wet than soaking or even misting and the curls responded immediatley. Scrunched in a little gel with my hands, then hit a few spots with my diffuser. Took about 5 minutes and my curls looked great! Won't hurt for you to give it a whirl and see if it's another piece to your hair puzzle

Sometimes I want to whip out the old routine just to see that sheen, but I know I will get there- it's coming together slowly but surely!

I've toyed with the U.G scrunching jelly but I think gels /jellies are a little heavy as my hair is so fine, so I'm trying mousse instead. Even with the gel though, nothing can keep my waves intact overnight.

Is it recommended to scrunch in some conditioner before styling product? I do on day 1/after washing but should I apply condish every day if I'm applying mousse?

eta: It's annoying because my hair is so incredibly shiny on wash day, it just loses its shine overnight :-$

I know how you feel. I'm still trying to figure out my second day hair. I don't even think of third day hair as possible for me yet lol my hair does stay clean but I sleep like a crazy person so no matter what it is a mess in the morning. I am going to try the washcloth method that was just bumped tomorrow. I hope it helps a little. Until then I just do my whole routine when I want to make sure my curls look nice :-\

My hair definitely loses something in the translation the 2nd day and there is no way I'm getting 3rd day hair! That's ok. I like what my hair looks like freshly washed but not so crazy about how long it takes to dry. On day 2 I just rewet my hair with a spray bottle of water and conditioner, scrunch and maybe put a bit of spray gel in if needed. It takes decades less time for it to dry so I'm happy even though it doesn't look as good as first day hair. It's acceptable. I guess both days I give a little to get a little.

I can usually get to day 4 and still look ok. My hair is 2b, medium-fine. I low poo, rinse out, apply a leave in during drier months, squeeze in a curl cream (recoil or organix moroccan oil curl cream), then lately I've been topping it with Deva's frizz free foam. I diffuse my hair about 75% dry to lock in the wave (for lack of a better term), then clip and air dry. At night, I sleep with my hair up in a pineapple. In the morning, I remove the pineapple and shake my hair loose. Then I wet my hands, grab some of my leave in conditioner and smooth it over my hair and gently scrunch just a little if needed. This usually is enough to eliminate any 2nd day frizz and boost any waves that loosened up overnight. The leave in I use is Regis Olive Oil leave in (yellow pump bottle) found at Walmart salons. I LOVE this stuff. It makes a huge difference. I've tried other leave ins and they don't help as much with multiple day hair. If for some reason, this isn't enough to encourage the curl, I'll spray my hair with a mix of water and leave in conditioner until it is pretty damp, scrunch, then diffuse.
