Default Do any wavies use the LOC method?

Hi, everyone!

I was reading on here over the weekend about the LOC method, and was wondering if any wavies use it. If so, what products do you use?

The ends of my hair have been so dry, so I was wondering if this would help seal in moisture. I shy away from oils, though, since my hair is so fine and can look greasy really easily.

Thanks in advance!

I tried it with both Yes to Carrots and VO5 Moisture Milks Strawberries and Cream conditioner as the LI (although not at the same time), coconut oil, KCCC and a gel. I had a hard time figuring out the right amount of oil to use and day one ended up looking greasy, while day two looked decent.

I haven't used the LOC method in a while since I found a method and product combo that is giving me consistent third day and today, fourth day hair. I low poo with KC Come Clean, use a RO (currently Mineral Fusion Curl Care Conditioner, use the VO5 as LI, and if I remember, I use KCKT in top of the LI. I then add KCCC and a hard hold gel.

Thanks for the response, KauaiMareCurl! That is so great that you're getting such great results with your current routine. I may have to try some of the products you're using.

My ends are just feeling so dry lately, so I may also experiment with a light oil to see if that helps.

I'm not a wavy, but I'll jump in anyway lol

I tried this method the other day and have to say, I didn't love the results. My curls were over-defined - kind of reminded me of the 'wet look' and it was greasy and limp the next day.

Maybe I need to play with the method for a while though and see what ratios are right for me. I don't tend to suffer from dryness though, so I think I'll be giving the LOC method a miss from now on.

I do pre-poo with oils though and find this works wonders. If you're worried leaving oils in your hair might make it greasy, then pre-pooing can be a great way to get the oils in your hair, without having to worry

Thanks, BotticelliBrit! When you pre-wash with oils, do you just massage them in and let them sit for awhile, or do you wash them out right away?

I've used coconut oil this way before (and as an overnight treatment), so that may just be better for my waves than doing the LOC method. Too much oil is not a good thing! :-)

I use coconut oil mostly too Sometimes I like to mix up a few different oils though (like jojoba, grapeseed, sweet almond & some olive oil).

But yeah, I just split my hair into sections and apply oil to each section (really making sure I concentrate on the ends and middle of my hair), finger detangling as I go. Then I flip my head upside down and pour the left over oil on my head and massage it all in. Then I just put my hair in a bun, wrap it in a plastic bag and go to bed I wash my hair as normal the next morning.

Yeah ... too much oil just leads to greasy and lifeless curls! It's so weird though, because some people swear by oils and use them daily to moisturise. Maybe our hair just isn't thirsty enough for that lol!

Do you pre-poo regularly? I think if you do it often you'll really start seeing a difference over time. I used to do it every time I washed and it helped my hair SO much. Because of work I can only do it on weekends now though!

Thanks so much for all the detailed info about how you use the oils! I'm going to start trying that out and see if it helps. I try to only wash twice a week, and that has been helping a lot with dryness. Like you, I probably would only be able to do the oiling the nights before I wash or on weekends, when I have more time to wash it all out.

I bet you're right that our hair just isn't thirsty enough for those oils. :-)

I have one more question about the pre-pooign with oils, do you do this on damp hair or dry hair before you bun it and sleep on it?

I do the LOC method and it works great for me. I use leave in (Jessicurl or Oyin), oil (avocado mix) and then Darcy's Curl Smoother--mostly butters. I get better curls and my hair is soft. I don't get great results from gels or mousses--so this is the best method for me.

I hope that helps.

If you are deep treating with penetrating oils (eg coconut, olive, avocado, sweet almond) always apply to dry hair - remember oil and water don't mix.

I don't know if this qualifies as LOC, maybe LOG. Anyway, I usually use As I Am Leave-In, then I use oil. Right now I'm experimenting with Argan Oil and I'm trying to figure out how much I need. This morning I used quite a lot, 15 drops. Anyway, then I use gel on top of that. I've also been experimenting with FSG, so I use some of that before I add my gel. I was worried about using too much of the oil, but after drying my hair is really very soft today, despite using a hard hold gel.

For a long time, I used coconut oil as my oil, but it seemed over time it began to dry out my hair. So, now I'm trying to find an alternative oil. I do still use the coconut oil as a pre-poo on dry hair, with pretty good results.

That's interesting, MysteryCurls, that the coconut oil dried out your hair like that when used as a LI . . . .

I haven't tried the LOC method for a few months since it left me with greasy waves, but will try it again. I need to just use a small amount of oil since too much really weighs down my hair.

Well that is my theory. But I'm thinking about adding it back in to my routine, because my hair hasn't drastically improved - a little, but not enough to be sure that was the culprit.
