Should I cut/trim my hair?

I have been growing out my wavy hair for about 2 years now and it is about 2 or so inches past my bra strap. It has layers (I always have layers :P) and is in sort of a v shape in the back because I have been doing trims now and then with the "pony tail method" when I see a little bit of split ends. I haven't had a real hair cut other than trimming in about 2 years.

The back of my hair does get as wavy/curly as the sides. The sides get really nice wave then the back is just sort of bleh. The ends get a little curl to them but not anywhere near as wavy as the sides get. I do have some split ends and I have just now been trying to style my wavy hair since about October. I know the ends have heat damage even though I always use a protector spray and they need trimmed anyway.

Do you think getting a hair cut so the back isn't in such a dramatic V shape might help bring out the waves more? I want to add more layers back there too since layers seem to lighten my hair up more to allow it to get wavier.

I don't mind taking a few inches off in order to help my hair look better because I have the patience to grow it out again. Do you think getting a hair cut with more layers and shorter ones in the back would help the waves form better?
It might, or you may just have a weaker wave pattern there. Best would be to consult a curly specialist stylist.

Have you checked the "salon finder" feature here? THere might be a good wavy/curly stylist near you. They'll be able to see and feel your hair for a better assessment. I have a pretty weak wave but layers in the back do help me. LONG layers are usually the way to go for a wavy but it seems tricky to find a stylist who can really cut them how you need them. I always think this gal shows the way to do it. You can show it to a stylist to show you what you mean Long Layer Haircut on Curly Wavy Hair: Hair Tutorial - YouTube
