Can you recommend a product for me? (curl booster/enhancer)

Hello! I was hoping some of you may have some ideas on what I can do as my next step in this curly girl journey, as far as styling my hair goes. I am currently only experimenting with leaving in some conditioner (so far just Suave Coconut or VO5) and a gel (LA looks mega mega hold). I never was one to use many products, if any before. So even using gel is a major step for me! I've been thinking that my hair may benefit from an extra step in between the conditioner and gel to boost my waves and curl. I have mostly pretty pathetic 2a throughout the back and sides of my hair. But in the very front I have what I guess I'd categorize as 2b-2c framing my face, around my ears, and the under layer. It's just the pesky top layer that seems to lie flat! When I load up on gel it does give it a lot more bend and starts to match a little better with the front. But I've noticed the gel tends to make my ringlet-y curls in the front more like s-bends, if that makes any sense. Is a curl enhancer another thing that could help? Any other ideas? Thanks in advance!

I think I am a mixture of 2ab, low or normal porosity (still figuring it out), medium density, and medium width. My hair is currently almost shoulder length with lots of layers and the stylist went crazy with texturizing!

Currently trying out...
Co wash: Suave Naturals, VO5, Aveda Be Curly Co wash
Wash: SM Fruit Fusion
RO: GVPCB
LI: VO5
Stylers: Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Mousse, LA Looks mega mega hold, and some Jessicurl samples
I have 2b/2c, dense, fine to med strand, med porous, colored.
Try AG recoil cream, amazing stuff. Will really boost those waves into curls ( a little goes a long way). Also try AG curl trigger spray (spray into your hands, rake through sections of hair). I like the AG recoil cream just a tad more, because it seems to add a little more moisture. I use them both, spray in summer, cream in winter. Both add shine, volume, silkiness and really make my curls pop.

Had the same problem as you with my top layer and bangs, not any more since using AG. Gels don't work well for me. They seem to hold my hair down, I don't get the root lift and extra volume I like with gels and don't like how they feel in my hair, even after breaking the hard cast. The thick puddings or heavier moisture products also don't work for me, weigh my hair down, look and feel greasy.

My routine is every 4 days: co-wash, leave in, AG curl. Day 2 hair is usually perfect. Days 3/4 spritz with water to reactivate curl, maybe add just a teeny bit more AG after spritzing. Or on day 3 or 4 scrunch/finger rake in a few drops of jojoba oil (dry hair only, not wet) . That's it.
Check out curlmart.com, lot's of reviews for lots of different curly hair products.

Camille Rose Curlmaker is my favorite trustoesr "middle" product.

Thank you for your responses! I'm thinking of trying one of those! But holy smokes, they are pricey, at least on Amazon. Where do you get yours?

Kfoley, that really helps to hear your routine. I'm still struggling to figure out exactly what my hair needs and what I like! Gel is something that's been difficult for me to get used to. I know what you mean about the feel of it even after it dries and I scrunch it. Do you find that the ag recoil cream has a good hold to it? My curls definitely fall on the 2nd and 3rd days. I'm ok with a less curly more wavy look, but it'd also be nice to not let it get too flat, especially in the back where I need a boost. I don't mind refreshing with water and a little product on those days, that sounds easy enough!

I've tried a few curl enhancers and I think I've finally homed in one the one I like the best. I've tried Jessicurl Rockin Ringlets (JCRR), AG Recoil, and SM Curl Enhancing Smoothie.

JCRR is the one I like the most out of all the three. Though it looks gross coming out of the bottle, I only need a quarter sized amount for my hair. I don't feel like it is especially drying, it does a fantastic job at really enhancing the wave I do have, and it has nice ingredients. Out of all the tree I've tried, this one gives me the most consistent results and I don't really ever find myself disappointed with it. I like to use it on top of a leave-in, and I've been pairing it with Confident Coils and LA Looks Gel, but I'm itching to try it with Spiralicious...

AG Recoil is nice too. I like the thick creamy consistency of it, but dislike the smell. It reminds me of a dentist office, for some reason. This one gives me similar curls to JCRR, only this one does leave my hair feeling dried out if I use it too often. I also can't seem to figure out the magic amount for my hair, or the magic way to apply it. Results for me are not consistent, but when I get it right it works very well.

Last is Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I like to use this one to give my hair a break from the magnesium sulfate in the other two. It's the most moisturizing out of the three, but for my hair, it does the least in terms of curl enhancement. It still does enhance my waves, but the effect is much softer. I find this one works better on the curlier parts of my hair, but leaves my wavy pieces more stringy. The other two don't do that. Unlike the other two, this one is the least expensive and the easiest to find in stores.

I apologize for the long post

Hello hair twin! Your hair sounds EXACTLY like mine. Kind of curly in the front and underneith, nearly straight on top and in the back. Mine might be more porous than yours but that's it. Sorry, don't have any advice. I'm still struggling with mine. I have a really good, totally non-CG way of re-texturizing it if you're interested in that. I'm getting frustrated with all the money I've spent trying stuff that doesn't work, so I'm thinking of going back to it

I should say though that I haven't tried a curl enhancer yet. They do tend to be expensive, but I'd like to give that a shot first before giving up. So thanks for this thread

An inexpensive choice to try is Organix Moroccan Oil Curl Perfecting cream.
