Hi I am a new poster to the site although I have visited several times without being a member. I think I have low porosity, coarse just about shoulder length hair , recently I have been using a natural drugstore conditioner and ecostyler green and have tried varying the amounts of conditioner and gel I use but either seem to get hair that is too soft or is really hard to SOTC completely out and neither style last the whole day. Any ideas on what the problem could be ? Are these products just not right for my hair? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
Sounds like you just haven't found the right balance. 2c hair can be pretty finicky because it's a bit curlier than most wavy hair but it can't quite handle the heavy products that curly hair can. Have you tried cowashing yet?
My general rule with any product is 'less is more' especially with heavy gels and things of that nature.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. I find that I can get away with it if I use them in small, small, amounts... Like pea sized. Unfortunately, a lot of it is trial and error.

Some of my favorites include:
Jane Carter's Curl Cream Gel
Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie
Shea Moisture's Deep Conditioning Treatments
Mop Top Curly Custard

Thanks for your reply, it always seems like i either don't use enough product or use too much to the point where it's hard to scrunch out . Sometimes I get softer curls but they end up with not enough hold . I've used a lot of the recommended gels and have yet to find a holy grail. I do co wash but have the same problem with that too either use too much and get too soft curls or not enough so my curls feel a bit hard it's really frustrating.

Also I found that using small amounts of product then experimenting works best.
Sounds like my hair is similar to yours, I would say it's low porosity, coarse in texture, products seem to just sit on top of my head also sometimes I wonder if my hair is even wet enough , never seems to get soaking wet ever. I have been using Aussie instant freeze after I co wash nothing else , I put a blob on each section comb through and then scrunch it in with water 3 times on each section , it gives me more consistent results then most gels I find . I have tried lighter gels and creams but have had little success with them
Hello! I have 2C hair as well. Mostly coarse, but a variety from fine to coarse. It is about shoulder length in front and just a bit shorter in the back. It is also low porosity. I stumbled upon what may be a good routine for me. I was trying to air dry.... But slept on wet hair to get this done. In always thought blowdrying was something that made my hair poof out more.

Recently, I had to get my hair done quickly and was also trying to use up old product. The result surprised me.

I washed my hair with Deva low poo, conditioned with Curl Junkie Curl Rehab, and plopped when I came out of the shower. I left the plop in only for the about 10 minutes. Then I put in about a quarter size amount of Curl Junkie Beauticurls leave in. After about 10 minutes, I added about a quarter size amount of Deva firm hold gel. I blow dried with a diffuser on low speed and low heat until dry. Then I added about two drops of Darshana Indian hair oil and about a nickel sized amount more leave in just to help calm any fly aways.

The result was soft, well defined waves/curls without crunch. I could run my fingers through without getting them caught or feeling gunk. I have not been able to have all of these results together with any other routine. I also love the Curl Junkie products, and now have a new appreciation for the Deva gel. Ohhh.... I also had second day hair and possible third day.....which I never get!

Sorry for the long post. I don't know if this will also work for anyone else, but I thought I would post. Hope it may help. Good luck!

I can't use leave-in conditioner or really heavy, creamy products, as they weigh my hair down or make it too soft as you said. Hard hold gel alone with nothing underneath makes it hard to SOTC. My best combination has been a lighter jelly like product (specifically UFD Curly Magic), followed by a hard hold gel (BRHG). My hair will be extremely stiff and crunchy as it dries, but it scrunches out to nice, soft curls that last 2-3 days. I also found I can't cowash - low-pooing with every wash works best.

Also, I have the opposite experience of many wavies - despite my hair being weighed down easily by heavy, creamy products, I find that I actually need a ton of product to get the hold I want. Unfortunately, "a little goes a long way" never worked for me. Of course that'll vary from person to person, so I can't say what will work best for you. I use so much product that my hair looks and feels so over-producty and gross when wet, but dries to great, soft, natural feeling curls that last at least 2 days.

Hang in there! It took me about 6 months to find the right products, amount to use, and styling method.

Oh, and if you haven't clarified your hair in a while, I might try that too for this issue you mentioned where your hair feels like it's not getting wet. I had that same problem until my stylist clarified my hair using Vitamin C powder (although any clarifying shampoo should do it). I had no idea that the reason my hair was feeling like it wasn't really wet was the buildup of old products (from back when I was using silicones, but a sulfate-free shampoo that couldn't remove them).

Have you tried a separate leave in or not rinsing all of your initial conditoner out?
Russianprncss-what are the ingredients in the Jane Carter curl cream gel and what do you like about it? I currently have a lot of product to get through, but that might be something I'd like to try.

A fellow 2c/3a girl here! Our hair can be so finicky because, like a lot of people said, it just doesn't quite work the way curly hair does, but it also isn't quite the same as wavy hair.

The best course of action really is to try as many products as you can and to test everything in different amounts. I find I can get away with using any amount of cream. However, if I use too much creams or leave-in coupled with too much gel, I find the crunch impossible to scrunch out completely.

The gel might also be too thick. Personally, I've never used ecostyler but I've seen the consistency in stores. Have you tried using a lighter hold gel?
