wavy, poofy, dried out hair

my hair isnt really like anyone else posting topics. my dad has poofy, curly, afro-type hair, and my mom has thin and straight hair, so i have a mixture of the two. my hair naturally is poofy, dried out, thick, and in between wavy and curly which in my opinion is worse than curly. it looks bad naturally and when i gel or mousse it it looks bad because its not wavy or curly. i dont like straightening my hair because it ruins it and i need something to do to my hair so that it will look normal. sometimes i will get it normal looking but then when i sleep on it, it looks horrible and is all a mess. i've tried putting it in a braid, blowdrying it with a diffuser, putting it in a bun, everything and nothing is good. i need help. also all the defrizzing creams dont work. if anyone has help for me..please i am desperate!
Welcome to nc.com!

First, have you read the Curly Girl book by Lorraine Massey?

Second, what hair products are you using now? Are you using microfiber towels instead of the usual terrycloth ones? Do you air dry and/or diffuse? Have you tried using deep conditioners or even a bit of honey mixed in with your conditioners?

Fill us in on what products you're using and if you're trying to be CG or modified-CG (using no or little sulfates and cones), so we can try to help you better .
