GELS for 2B's

I want to start a thread about gels that us 2b's use. Please share your thoughts about the gel that you use. Maybe we can help each other out on the quest of the HG.

Aussie DUAL PERSONALITY GEL+WATER
This is becoming my HG. I love the texture and the suprising soft hold. It took a while for me to get the hang of the application process, but now I have been getting consistent and clumpy results the last 3 weeks. It enhances my waves into curls so well that I can almost pass as a 3A (after diffusing, of course). I love the price, but unfortunately, it isn't available in ALL the neighborhood drug stores around here. I suppose it is relatively new.

Aussie TIZZ NO FRIZZ
This is much more available in my neighborhood drug stores. I layer this on after the 'dual'. It is more like a finishing gel for me. I love the smell, reminds me of my childhood for some reason (my favorite Sanrio bubble gum ) I tired using it as my primary gel but it didn't work as well as the 'dual' does.

ALL IN ALL, I have tried both of these gels separately, but I notice they work better as a team on my hair. I apply these gels on very wet hair, btw.
This is a good idea! Here are some that I use:

Angell: Works best with some conditioner left in under it. I have to use alot and it works better when it's hot and humid. It does give me larger clumps but they sometimes fall out a little by the end of the day.

Nexxus Phyto Organic The Arts Redefining gel: Verrrry similar to Angell but has a little better hold and will actually give me great 2nd day hair.

B&A gel: Love this! It's probably closest to a HG for me. It gives good curl definition, good clumps and good hold. Always gives good hair for a 2nd and sometimes a 3rd day. I highly recommend this gel.

Suave Firm Hold (Biolage Gelee knockoff): I've been using this one for about 1 week. I really like it. It has good curl definition and really good hold. I had awesome hair for 3 days with it without rewetting (just doing the Awe/Boots thing to refresh). At first the curls were a little stringy but not after a couple of uses. I must have raked a little the first time I used it but it's great when scrunched in.
2b/3a, primarily use Jessicurl and DevaCurl products, Curls Hair Tea conditioner and various gels. I'm modified CG-ish since 5/04.
Shhh Ava! I CANNOT go and buy one more gel.!! Quit tempting me. I didn't have luck with the Tizz or the Dual, but now that I am back home, they may be worth another try...No, someone please take my keys!!!

Some gels that I have liked are pretty much a ditto to KimmyC's post. I really am liking Angell right now, but I use it over B&A. I love both, but feel like I need a little more hold on the canopy than I get with just B&A alone. I have used (and liked ok) Dep sports gel, got2be spiked up gel. One gel I couldn't get the hang of, but may give it another try is the HE HDG. It so didn't work for me at my mom's, with her well water. But here, who knows. I may need to start looking for the Nexxus POTAR since I keep hearing pretty good things about it...Oh gosh there I go looking for my keys again...

Ava, I have both of the Aussies that you use, but I've only used the Gel+Water (like it!). I need to try the Tizz No Frizz over it

ABBA Weightless Gel - This is definitely a HG product for me. I use it every single day along the front & top scalp area of my head. It gives me awesome root lift & hold w/o weighing my hair down.

Kenra Styling Gel Hold 17 - Gives me more curls (although they are thinner & not as clumped as some of my other gels, which is fine with me) & great hold.

Trevor Sorbie Sliquid - This is a very liquidy gel, so I usually mix it with a pea sized blob of ABBA WG. Great spreadability & shine, & good hold when mixed with ABBA - not enough hold for me on its own.

Aura Hypoallergenic Gel - This is a good gel, but I also mix this with the ABBA. Together they give great hold & shine.

L'Oreal Curl Vive Spray Gel - I swap the sprayer top for a push cap & use this like a normal gel. Great hold & curl formation from this one, along with shine. Great, cheap drugstore product

Biolage Gelee - On my hair, this is a more expensive version of the L'Oreal Curl Vive. I get similar results from both of these.

TIGI Frisky Gel - This is a heavier gel, so I have to be careful of the amount I use. It gives me great curls, which I think is due to the honey in it.

Here's my current rotation of gels:

Aura Hypoallergenic
Angell
Abba Weightless

My three A gels. Abba by itself is too much like glue for my hair: no matter how wet my hair is when I put it in, how careful I am at using on a bit, etc. Angell by itself gives me great clumps but not enough hold. Abba + Angell has so far been the best of both worlds: clumps and hold. I am having much better luck with this combo in the hot weather. Aura does OK by itself, and I do add a dab of Abba on occasion as well. Aura is not anything super special, but it's good for mixing with other gels or for a lazy weekend day when I'm just looking for no-frills, quickly styled hair.

Aquage Defining Gel

OK, another A gel. I actually think I like this one the best. Nice easy-to-spread consistency, good hold without being super strong or ultra crunchy, nice clumps, nice shine. It's not super CG friendly, so I try to rotate it with my other gels. I do poo (currently with a mild sulfate) so I'm obviously not strict CG, but I do like to avoid or at least forestall buildup as much as possible.

B&A

If I have one gel I use more than any others, this is it. Great all-around gel. Does pretty much everything for my hair: hold, clumps, curl enhacing, shine, etc. A bit pricey but does last for a very, very long time. Between this and the Aquage, I could be happy (if only the PJ in me would accept it! )

HE HDG

Not as big a fan as I was a month or two ago, but still good for what it does. Gives me a less curly look than the others I've mentioned, but nice for a change every now and then.
2b-ish--embracing my waves this summer
Aussie Catch the Wave condish, L'Oreal NutriGloss condish; Nexxus Designing Texxtur Cream, Rusk Radical Creme, Pantene Curl Defining Mousse, Paul Mitchell Sculpting Foam; coconut oil for DTs
meegs - Like you, I can't use the ABBA alone either (except for the front/root area) UNLESS I use it over CK. It's very hard to spread by itself in my hair, but I do find I mix it with just about every other gel I have

I am really only using B&A right now and love it. I am sure I have tried millions of gels over the years; but, I do not think I knew enough about my hair to recommend or not recommend anything. I will keep you posted
My hair seems to be going through the "1-Hit Wonder" stage the last few days . I just started using Curl Keeper, so I'm trying new things. I'll try it under one of my gels and be so excited 'cos my hair looks good. Next day, same combo and nothing . I think since I got my hair trimmed the other day is part of the reason. Or it could be the increasing humidity here in southeast Texas.

I wish I could give such good descriptions as you gals, but sometimes after my hair is dry and I have to arrange it, it ends up looking like I've brushed it. This is whether I use my hands or a microfiber towel after it's dry. It's getting frustrating .

Anyway, these are the gels that I use pretty often, in no particular order:

Garnier Fructis XXL Volume Weightless Gel

HE HDG

Aussie Tizz No Frizz (might get the Dual+Water and try that Ava)

ABBA Weightless Gel

Aura Hypo-allergenic Gel

Suave Biolage Gelee knockoff

FOTE w/honey or mixed with a gel

Rocking Ringlets

Gelebration Spray

All over Curl Keeper.

That's all I can think of at the moment (I'm at work).

I did use Ice Whip over CK the other day and liked it .. maybe my hair needs mousse during the summer :headscratch:headscratch.gif .

I could use some help finding a great gel.

I go back and forth with my hair. I've been straightening a lot lately, but I don't think I can keep doing that with the humidity coming on strong. I get the most consistent results with Ouidad Climate Control. Great curl formation (almost 3a with diffusing). My biggest problem is frizz.

I've discussed this problem at some length with laurabeth, and I've learned a few things about my hair: 1) my hair does not like to "be wet"---some people's hair looks great wet, and products like curl keeper help them maintain that look. Curl Keeper made me into a giant frizz ball. Other products that don't work well for me (I'm guessing for the same reason) are: HE HHG, Aussie Tizz no Frizz, Jessicurl gelebration. 2) I can't stand stickiness. Abba Weightless was just too stiff for me. I have this obsession with only using a single styling product, so I never tried it in combo. 3) Many botanicals make my skin and scalp breakout. 4) I have an oily scalp and need to shampoo regularly with a shampoo that has sulfates. (I know that sounds really bad, but if I don't, I turn into a greaseball.)

I am curious about the B&A gel, the Kenra 17 (which I haven't been able to find), and the Aussie Gel & Water. For those of you who love these, what is your routine?

I apply both gels on soaking wet hair. Blot out excess water, and diffuse to 80% dry using pixiecurl method.
As a general rule, things that have to be applied in soaking wet hair don't work for me. I just end up with piles of frizz. I can't explain it, though laurabeth seemed to think that there are some people whose hair doesn't handle these products well.
Ava, I just bought some Gel + Water to try with my Tizz No Frizz. I'm going to try that combo tomorrow .

CSB - how do you dry your hair, diffuse or air dry? I was on Jessicurl's site the other day reading through user's questions and since doing what she suggested, it has helped with the frizz. And I live north of Houston, so it's really humid here.

She recommends applying products to soaking wet hair, scrunching with a microfiber towel and begin diffusing immediately. I know you said your hair doesn't like having products applied to it wet, but it may also depend on how you're drying your hair. I used to let my hair air dry 15-20 minutes before diffusing but since I started doing what she recommended, it's helped alot.

As for gels, since you're not CG, you might want to try Garnier Fructis XXL Volume Weightless Gel. For me, it does what ABBA does without the stiffness. It gives me soft waves/curls.

Welcome to the land of the product junkies !

Angell, but don't hold me to that tomorrow
Modified CG since 9/03. 2B/3A. JESSICURL!!! Gentle Poo, Aloeba, Gelebration, Awe; or Mop Top Poo & Condish; Curlisto Mousse & Gel I. Winter: Elucence MB Clarify, Shampoo & Conditioner. ACV & honey rinses. Plop & Pixiecurl diffuse. Password: curls
Ava, I forgot to put this in my latest PM, but I'm modified CG since a couple of things I use has a cone in it. My hair likes cones, but I try to limit it. I think the Suave Humectant conditioner I use to "wash" with (Nexxus knockoff, I think) has a cone, but I have 2 bottles to use up, then I'll stick with VO5 Strawberries & Cream (heavenly scent!!) and Elucence to wash and condition with.

When I got my hair highlighted about a month ago, she had to use shampoo to get the dye off my scalp and it took about a week for my hair to get back to normal , so I knew then that washing with conditioner was a good thing for my hair .

I tried the full jessicurl thing for about a week a year and a half (or so) ago. My hair was the biggest awful frizzball you could imagine. I followed her directions to the letter: applied products to soaking wet hair, scrunched with a microfiber towel and diffused immediately until 70% dry (which takes forever, by the way). Horrible frizz for me. My hair actually has less frizz if I apply products to damp hair, I let it air dry 15-20 min., then diffuse to 70%. I'm not saying it works for everyone: it's just my hair.

Anybody have ingredients for phyto organics redefining?

No sorry

I just tried Abba Weightless and I am really liking it. I use it the same way as B&A so I might start rotating the two.

Also, my hair responds really well if I srunch a little product (usually w/ a little coconute oil) into dry hair. That really helps with curl formation and frizz. I know this isn't supposed to be how it works; but, it does :P
I just needed to add a couple of more gels to my list:

*Rusk Deepshine Liquid Gel - OMG, why oh why did they discontinue this?!?!?!? :seriouslymad:madgo.gif I've used this the last few days (mixed with a bit of Abba), & I cannot believe what great 2nd day hair I get with it!!! In fact, I was going to use Ava's Aussie combo this AM, but I just couldn't wash my hair - I'm loving the look from yesterday's Rusk/Abba combo The hold of this stuff is incredible

*Back to Basics Curl Catalyst - again, I mix this with a bit of Abba (can you tell how much I adore the Abba Weightless ) & just get GREAT results!!

I honestly believe that Abba WG improves ANY gel I use. It just gives more hold & volume with no weight. Alone, I can only use it over the CK.

Kimberly - how are you using the Abba? Alone over the Jessicurl? How much do you use? Sorry for so many questions, but I just love your hair
